Don't Waste Your Money: Extended Warranties - October 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

(Toledo News Now) - Whenever you buy a car or appliance, chances are the salesman will push an extended warranty. If you're not careful, you could end up wasting your money.

Extended warranties, or service contracts, promise peace of mind from car repairs, but at at their high cost, are they really worth it?

Lonena Henn was worried about repair costs on her 2007 Lincoln which was approaching 100,000 miles. She agreed to pay over $3,000 for an extended warranty, but when her Lincoln recently broke down, the dealership her car was towed to told her they would only cover the repair if she could produce receipts for oil changes and filters.

The warranty company was denying her repair because she did not have all her records.

A company spokesman pointed us to the contract, which states you must save every oil change receipt, and be able to prove it was changed every 5,000 miles. Those changes had to also be done by a commercial facility, not by a family member, which Henn said she'd done a few times.

After we got involved, her repair shop agreed to lower her bill from $500 to $400, but the warranty company would only say it will re-examine her claim.

Henn says she'll think twice before buying coverage again.

"Before you think of investing in something like this, get all the information, all the paperwork and read it very thoroughly," she said.

The company that administers Henn's warranty still gets a A-rating from the Better Business Bureau, because it clearly spells out the rules in the contract.

Make sure you read the fine print before you buy, and don't waste your money.

Hillcrest Apartment Project Gets $7.46 Million in Construction Financing - October 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Real estate and capital services provider HFF has secured $7.46 million in construction financing for a planned 36-unit apartment building in Hillcrest, being developed by San Diego-based Veritas Urban Properties.

The five-story project is planned for a 15,200-square-foot parcel at 4021 Eighth Ave., immediately northwest of Balboa Park, according to HFF. The debt placement team, led by HFFs Aldon Cole and Bryan Clark, secured the financing through a life insurance company lender.

The builder on the Hillcrest project is Murfey Construction Inc., with the apartments set for completion in early 2016. Veritas Urban Properties was founded in 2011 by brothers Russ and Scott Murfey and has recently developed other urban residential and mixed-used projects in San Diegos Point Loma and Crown Point neighborhoods.

HFF, also known as Holliday Fenoglio Fowler LP, is a division of Pittsburgh-based HFF Inc. (NYSE: HF) and has a regional office in San Diego.

New Landmark Starts To Rise At Bostons Northern Gateway - October 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Steve Adams

    The Warren Group

A 38-story apartment building that will tower over the TD Garden is set to become a new landmark at the northern gateway to Boston.

The 503-unit Avalon North Station will become Boston's tallest rental complex and the highest-profile symbol to date of the North Station neighborhood's reinvention. It follows the more modest examples set in recent years by the nearby Victor and Avenir apartment complexes, which have added a 24-7 element to a neighborhood that rarely swarms with street life unless there's an event at the Garden.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh said one of his goals is creating visually distinct gateways at the entrances to the city.

"We have to make them exciting, and that's what this project does," Walsh said at a groundbreaking ceremony Monday. "As you're coming [into the city], one of the first things you're going to see is this beautiful building."

Site work began in early fall on the $250-million Avalon North Station complex behind the Thomas P. O'Neill Federal Building on Causeway Street.

The complex will contain 4,000 square feet of retail space on the first two floors, and the site will contain a new walkway connecting Causeway Street to the Charles River.

Construction is expected to take three years, with the first units available in late 2016, said Scott Dale, senior vice president for AvalonBay Communities.

Marble countertops from RRC building went into Forsyth's home, says CTF - October 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A photo provided by the Canadian Taxpayers Association shows the marbled kitchen.

Former Red River College president Stephanie Forsyth is being called out onto the carpet by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) over surplus marble kitchen countertops that were installed in her home.

The taxpayer watchdog released documents this morning indicating that Forsyth received the marble marked for disposal from the colleges Patterson GlobalFoods Institute (PGI) building, and had the stone installed in her former Wellington Crescent home.

This afternoon, RRC issued a statement in which it said only that newly-appointed board of governors chair Lloyd Schreyer will review the matter "in order to make recommendations regarding appropriate actions based on the findings of the investigation."

The house has now been sold and Forsyth has moved away from the city.

"If the former president had taken a few scraps of old plywood, no one would care," CTF prairie director Colin Craig said in a statement. "But were talking about expensive marble and photos suggest it could be a sizeable amount. The college should have sold off the material."

The CTF obtained emails regarding the transfer of goods through a freedom of information request. Correspondence between top-level RRC staff shows that the school was aware of the marble countertop matter months ago.
