Photograph by Rose MeilyFeng shui master and astrologer Y.C. Sun recently educated members of the Silicon Valley Association of Realtors on the principles of feng shui and what the Year of the Wooden Goat has in store for real estate this year.
It will be a good year for real estate, but teamwork will be important for success in 2015, according to Master Y.C. Sun, guest speaker at a recent Silicon Valley Association of Realtors Young Professionals Network/Global Business Council lunar new year celebration.
The nationally renowned feng shui master and astrologer gave Realtors advice on feng shui and what to expect this year which, according to the lunar calendar, is the Year of the Wooden Goat.
Goats are graceful, kind, gentle, shy, emotional and caring. They possess humility and sympathy. They dislike conflict and the lack of support from peers, family or friends. This year, agents must focus on collaboration and partnership, said Master Sun.
It will be a good year for real estate, according to the astrologer, even though the Fed is ready to get out of the market and expected to raise short-term rates slightly in April or June. He predicted Chinese investment in real estate will focus on bigger ticket items of residential/commercial properties in big cities like New York.
Growth areas with hot markets will be to the north (Chicago, Twin Cities, Sacramento, Denver), southwest (Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego, San Jose, Phoenix), east (D.C., Boston, Long Island, Queens, East Bay) and the northwest (Seattle, Portland). Booming areas will be by the water, like properties in Oakland, Lake Merced, San Francisco Mission Bay, Richmond's Marina Bay and Alameda.
The Bay Area will continue to be a hot market, but due to tight supply and high prices, he urges buyers to focus on their second-choice neighborhoods.
Feng shui is an ancient Chinese art harmonizing everyone with the surrounding environment, based upon placement of objects in relation to the flow of "Chi." Master Sun said this year good locations in a home will be the north (this location will receive excellent energy for people to gain a lot of money, get a promotion, buy property, get lucky in romance and become a game winner), southwest, northwest and east.
Bad locations this year are the west, southeast, center and south. So buyers, particularly Chinese buyers who adhere to feng shui principles, will not be inclined to consider homes that face west, especially if a road or street directly leads to the home.

UNITED NATIONS: Former British prime minister and UN (United Nations) Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown said Wednesday that his office would closely monitor efforts, under the Safe Schools Initiative, to improve security at 1,000 schools in Pakistan.
He said that Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had pledged his support to the move.
We are going to monitor the implementation of safety measures at every school in Pakistan, Brown told a press conference at UN Headquarters in New York.
Security fences, metal detectors, armed guards and emergency communication systems are part of a package of safety measures for Pakistan's schools being proposed by the UN envoy.
The former UK prime minister has held talks with Pakistan's prime minister Nawaz Sharif last month about making schools safer after the Peshawar school massacre.
Brown said he wants to help schools stand up to terrorist violence.
The proposals follow an agreement between UN envoy Brown and Prime Minister Sharif to improve the safety of schools in Pakistan.
It follows a Taliban attack on a school in Peshawar in December in which more than 140 students and staff were killed.
Brown is promoting an innovative partnership which will deliver state-of-the-art technology to promote safe schools in Pakistan in cooperation with the government, UNICEF, the Global Business Coalition for Education and local NGOs.
Project is spearheaded by pro-bono technology contribution Perdictify, Me, a US-based data sciences and predictive analytics form, headed by Rob Burns, CEO and Dr. Zeeshan-ul-Hassan Usmani, Co-founder and Chief Data scientist.

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are urging President Obama to mend fences with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The relationship between the two leaders has soured in the run-up to the prime ministers election triumph this week. But members of Congress say its time to bury the hatchet.
Lawmakers say Obama should do so himself.
Now that he has been elected by the people in a free and fair election, the president should reach out to him. The president should say, OK, there are too many issues that are important to us, said Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the chairman of the Armed Services Committee who lost to Obama in the 2008 presidential race.
Ill bet you that the president doesnt, just because of the way he has been behaving since the elections last November, he added.
Rep. Eliot Engel (N.Y.), the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said, My observation is that their disagreements are on policy as well as perhaps personality, and I would hope that both men would reach out to each other and work through it. ... The U.S.-Israel relationship is more important than the relationship between any two individuals.
Now that the election is over, continuing to mend tensions in the U.S.-Israel relationship needs to be a priority for everyone, regardless of political affiliation, said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee. I hope the new Israeli government can work toward that end.
White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that Obama will call Netanyahu in coming days.
Earnest noted that, in previous elections, Obama has waited until the prime minister formed a new coalition government.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is eyeing a presidential bid in 2016, said it would be good for the president and prime minister to try to bury some animosities and move forward.

Q: The chemical information reported in The Fayetteville Observer poses a question. Will the commercial filters, like Pur and Brita, filter the chemical 1,4-dioxane from our drinking water? - J.H., Fayetteville
A: The Fayetteville Public Works Commission says conventional water treatment at public facilities is ineffective at removing this unregulated chemical that has been detected in Fayetteville tap water.
But the PWC says it can't speak for those home filtering products. We tried to reach spokesmen with the manufacturers of Brita and Pur.
We were unsuccessful in our efforts to reach Pur.
David Kargas, a spokesman for the Brita brand, said their filters are not certified for reducing 1,4-dioxane, which is not currently regulated. He said Brita filters are tested only for contaminants on which standards and testing methods have been established by the Environmental Protection Agency's Primary Drinking Water Regulations.
The manmade chemical is widely used in paint strippers, varnishes, dyes, greases and even some cosmetics and shampoos. The Environmental Protection Agency says it may cause cancer if consumed in large quantities over a lifetime.
State and PWC officials are trying to find the source of it in the Cape Fear River, where the chemical appears to be the most prevalent in North Carolina.
One of the researchers, Detlef Knappe, an N.C. State University environmental engineering professor, said he has begun sampling home filtering products for their ability to remove 1,4-dioxane, and he hopes to have the results in the next two to three months.

MELITA ISLAND When the Boy Scouts left their camp on Melita Island last fall, someone turned off the lights.
But then a short took them out completely.
Fixing an electrical problem on an island can be a tad more challenging than simply summoning an electrician.
In this case it involved laying 5,000 feet of new cable across the bottom of Flathead Lake, and six figures worth of money.
But the Boy Scouts announced this week that power to the island has been restored, thanks to a lot of volunteer help, not to mention the generosity of a contractor, a supplier and a utility company.
***
The problem, according to Mary Matelich, vice president for public relations for the Boy Scouts of America Montana Council, was in the power cable that stretched from the mainland to a transformer near the Melita Island lodge.
Installed in the early 1970s, it had already lasted twice as long as had been expected when it first went into use.
When Scout leaders boated out to the island in October to do routine maintenance work, they discovered ice cream oozing out of freezers, and lights that wouldnt turn on in the lodge.
Initial bids to replace the cable came in at $325,000 to $350,000, Matelich said. Thats when Peter Jones, program director for the Montana Council, took a different approach.

Gov. Bill Haslam will lead the 2015 Mule Day Parade as grand marshal.
The governor has been known to attend the festivities in the past, but this year, he will lead the charge in the annual equine event.
I always look forward to Mule Day, and I am incredibly honored to be this years grand marshal, Haslam said Thursday. This will be my sixth Mule Day, and it is one of my favorite Tennessee traditions.
The Knoxville native went to Emory University in 1976, where he met Crissy a Memphis woman who would later become his wife. Haslam graduated from the university with a history degree.
He and Crissy eventually married and settled in Knoxville, where the Haslam family managed a chain of gas stations. When Bill Haslam first started working for the company, the Pilot Corporation had 800 employees, which grew to more than 14,000 employees in 39 states when he left, according to his online biography.
In 2003, he became the mayor of Knoxville and was re-elected in 2007. Haslam was elected governor in 2010 and won the seat again in 2014.
For the second year, the Mule Day office has decided to choose an honorary grand marshal. This year, longtime volunteer Phil Byington was selected.
I think its quite an honor. I was really surprised when they wrote me the letter and told me about it, Byington said.
Originally from Missouri, Byington later moved to Michigan in 1943 where he raised mules. There he worked for General Motors as an industrial electrician.
He eventually stopped in Columbia in Spring 1998 after hearing about Mule Day while attending another mule-centered event. Byington found a campsite and noticed others around him still had some setting up to do. He was put to work and volunteered his experience as an electrician in helping attendees.
