First steps to wastewater treatment -

Clarenville to measure sewage going into the ocean
Canadian towns pumping sewage into nearby waters is a reality and Clarenville is no exception from the problem.
Waste Water
The regulations, published July 18, 2012, apply to any outfall with an average daily volume of 100,000 litres a day, an amount equal to an Olympic-size swimming pool each month.
At its latest meeting, Clarenville town council discussed the necessary steps to curb the problem, the first step being outfall monitoring.
Through a tender call, the town hired BioMaxx Wastewater to install and monitor flow meters at four locations in the town at a cost of $36,360.
The town's director of operations Rick Wells told council it will monitor volume as well as effluent and suspended solids being discharged into salt water.
"This is all part of the monitoring program through BioMaxx and they will report on an app so he has access. This will be done quarterly," said Wells. "When we have significant rainfall you can tell how much infiltration is coming into our system as well because of our monitoring. It's pretty neat technology."
There are eight outfalls in total, and four of them require monitoring because they are larger outfalls, said Wells.
There are two in Shoal Harbour - one at Man Point and across from Lori Ann Estates - and two in Clarenville, at Cormack Drive and in Broad Cove.

First steps to wastewater treatment
The screened porches of nearly 300 Palm Beach County residents may have to be retrofitted or removed because of faulty building permits, county officials revealed Wednesday.
The county is revoking building permits issued for screen and aluminum structures built from 2007 to 2014 by contractor Rene Mario Cantin, of Florida Screen Builders Inc. in Palm City.
The county's Building Division accuses Cantin's company of submitting designs that were purported to meet state standards, but instead had been slightly "altered." That could have resulted in building structures more vulnerable to wind damage than the state allows, according to the county.
Now the builder faces a hearing and the screened porches will have to be inspected again to see if they can remain intact.
"We are going to have to go back and see what we have to do to get them corrected," said Rebecca Caldwell, the county's executive director of planning, zoning and building. "We won't know until we look at them one by one."
Cantin Wednesday said that the county's concerns are "nothing major" and that the screened-in structures he built actually surpass wind-speed requirements.
Most of the affected properties are west of Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Boynton Beach, though the permit discrepancies involved properties across the county.
County officials have spent nearly a year identifying the properties affected by the permit problems. Residents could start receiving letters this week notifying them that their screened porches are affected.
Cantin said that someone working for his company prepared drawings for his permit applications and "made some artful adjustments" to the designs, but that they will ultimately be proven to be "stronger than it needs to be."
"It's not like this is something that doesn't work," Cantin said. "Nothing out there has to be rebuilt. ... There is no safety issue."

Steamboat Springs, Colorado (PRWEB) March 19, 2015
In a surprise move and for a limited time only, The Porches of Steamboat, a collection of luxury townhomes located in the base area of the ski mountain in Steamboat Springs, CO, reduced the selling price of one of its most popular large units. This Ponderosa townhome has five bedrooms, five and a half baths, and over 5,000 square feet. The reduced price of 1996 Indian Summer Drive is now $1,996,000. The large units are the first to book in The Porches luxury rental program. Our Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence rental program has become a significant benefit to our owners, said Laurie Tucker, Real Estate Specialist at The Porches. This has resulted in a surge of interest and activity over the last several months. Steamboat Springs was listed as one of the 25 Words Best Ski Towns by National Geographic magazine.
As reported by Jason Blevins on Monday in The Denver Post, Colorado Ski Country, the trade group that represents 21 of the state's 25 ski areas . . . reported visitation had climbed 3.7 percent in the first two months of the year, compared to the same period last season. Visitation for the season from opening day through February is up 1.9 percent over the 2013-14 season, which ranked as a record with 12.6 million skier visits. Although January was an unusually dry snow month in Colorado, heavy early snows created a substantial base that could be maintained and enhanced by advanced snow grooming techniques. Steamboat Springs ranked with Aspen/Snowmass and Breckenridge as the top three for snow totals at the major Colorado ski resorts as of March 17, 2015. As we move into Spring Break, we could not ask for better snow or better spring weather to ski it, noted Laurie Tucker at The Porches. For our owners, their townhomes at The Porches provide a home away from home for both the family ski vacations and for the summer escapes from the heat. The special reduced price on our largest luxury townhome creates an ownership opportunity for an extended family or for two close families to share years of activities and adventures in our world-class resort.

Robson Street will soon be a place to come home to.
This years VIVA Vancouver installation has been selected and will see a series of front porches installed in the 800-block Robson Street, in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
The design was created by Chicago-based architectural design company Design With, led by architects Stewart Hicks and Allison Newmeyer, and selected by a blind jury review.
It is the first time in VIVA Vancouvers five-year run that the seasonal public space installation will be created by designers from outside Vancouver.
The installation, titled Porch Parade, will feature an ad hoc arrangement of front porches in vibrant colours, with lawn furniture available to the public for use.
The design features a collection of porches that at first appear abstract but when full of visitors, will be a lively and familiar atmosphere for downtown Vancouver, read a media release announcing this years VIVA Vancouver installation.
The porches will be installed and open to the public by July 1, and will remain in public until Labour Day, when Robson Street will be reopened to vehicle traffic.
This years public space design project was selected from among 81 submissions.
A design honorarium of up to $40,000 will cover costs of materials, fabrication, construction, installation and de-installation.

In a few months, a block of Robson Street will be transformed into series of wooden porches painted in bright colours and open to public use.
The installation called Porch Parade is the winner of a design-build competition held by the City of Vancouver each year.
This year, a team from Chicago won the honour of sprucing up a block of Robson Street in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
Cheryl Nelms with the City of Vancouver says the winning design allows a lot of interaction. "That's one of the keycriteriathat the judges were looking at ... the element of social connection," she said.
"This one was interesting because of more the idea of using this front porch concept, lots of use of colour and we just haven't sort of seen that before."
The design was chosen out of about 80 entries from around the world. It will be set up on Robson Street on July 1 through to Labour Day.
