CADILLAC Neighbors of the Wexford County jail project indicated they are resigned to its construction and hope to reduce its impact on their nearby Christian school.

On Wednesday, members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and parents from the Northview Seventh-day Adventist Schoolwere still opposed to the location of the new jail project but ultimately said they would not try to stop or delay the direction in which the county was clearly headed.

They also said the jail itself has never been a point of contention. Church members have been strongly opposed to its locationfor its proximity to the the school and church. The new jail will be built at1015 Lincoln St., north of M-55/Division Street and west of Crosby Road.

Seventh-day Adventist ChurchPastor Pat Milligan said it was obvious that the county was going to build the jail but asked the board of commissioners if it was possible for the county to consider building a fence around the school as added protection for students.

Although the board didn't address the request directly, several board members, including Les Houslerand chairman Gideon Mitchell, said it was definitely something the board would consider.

Parent Gunther Schwartz also spoke at the public hearing and said that he was still concerned about the jail's proximityto the school as both the students and inmates would basically be within shouting distance of each other.

During public comment at the regular meeting, Schwartz spoke again, relaying the message that there were still concerns, but the goal was not to impede progress of the construction of the new jail.

We have prayed about this and are leaving it in the Lords hands, Schwartz said.

The current 50-year-old jail has only 32 beds, while the number of inmates reaches 90 to 100 each month. An in-depth study concluded that the jail functions as a holding facility for inmates being shuttled to and from court dates, at significant expense to taxpayers of about $600,000 a year. The $12.5 million project includes a new 158-bed jail and administrative offices on a 10-acre site.

Church resigned to jail construction in Wexford County

Luxury condos in the former St. Augustines Church in South Boston have hit the market, offering buyers an opportunity to live in new, modern units amid high Victorian Gothic architecture, with soaring ceilings and arched windows.

Twenty two- and three-bedroom condos are taking shape in the former Catholic church on Dorchester Street each of them two or three levels and another nine one-bedrooms will occupy the attached former rectory. Prices range from $649,000 to $1.29 million for the roughly 1,000- to 2,000-square-foot units.

After four months of demolition work, the property is still under construction, with an Aug. 31 scheduled completion date by owner Brenco Construction of Milton.

Condo interiors wont have exposed brick or stained glass windows, but the ornate arched frames will be preserved and fitted with new custom windows including a massive one in the penthouses lobby that will provide views of the Boston skyline and landmark buildings such as the John Hancock tower.

Its going to have a contemporary feel inside, said Jacob Carlin, the propertys exclusive listing agent and the owner of JW Brokerage in South Boston. The church was in such disrepair that it was hard to try and save some things.

Features will include hardwood floors, tile bathrooms, professional-grade, stainless steel appliances, granite kitchen countertops, surround sound, walk-in closets and in-unit laundry hookups. Master baths will have walk-in showers with glass surrounds, while the guest baths will have soaking tubs and showers.

Garage parking is being added underneath the church in its former function hall, and residents will have an elevator and access to a clubroom with a kitchenette, surround sound and a flat-screen television.

Built in 1874, the church was designed by Patrick Charles Keely, an Irish-born architect heralded as the most prolific designer of Catholic churches, with more than 600 to his credit, including the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in the South End and more than 30 others in Massachusetts. Under mounting financial pressure, the Archdiocese of Boston closed St. Augustines in 2004, and the citys Landmarks Commission denied a petition to designate it as a landmark.

The former churchs red-brick facade is being preserved and will be repointed, and the slate roof will be maintained. The massive center entrance with its wooden doors and ornamental iron fixtures also will be preserved.

Obviously the architecture of the church is something we could never replicate now it would be too expensive, Carlin said.

Hot Property: Southie church split up into 20 luxury condos

Coinciding with the Church Basement Ladies in the Last Potluck Supper showing at the Liberty Center Association for the Arts, on Thursday the Calvary Episcopal Church hosted a tour and luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church, located at 713 S. Ohio Ave. Byron Matson, a vestry member, gave a presentation on the churchs history and original stained glass to approximately 50 people in the churchs Nave.

Members of the local Red Hat Society, the Show Me Ladies with Hatitudes attended the event Thursday. It was church ladies who raised the money and bought the property, Matson told the group. Calvary Episcopal Church began in 1885 and church construction began in 1886.

Calvary Episcopal Church dates back to 1885-86; all of the stained glass windows are original. The lion motif on a south facing window represents St. Mark the Evangelist. Three other windows represent St. John with an eagle, St. Luke with an ox and St. Matthew as a man.

After historical presentations by Matson and by Sunday Supply Priest Father (retired) Harvel Sanders, the group went downstairs to the fellowship hall for lunch and dessert. From left, Gwen Hinken and Janette Pace, both members of the Show Me Ladies with Hatitudes, and Esther Kastis, a guest of Pace, sample brownies at the dessert table. The members of Calvary Episcopal Church provided the home-cooked meal and desserts for the tour.

A descending dove baptismal font, circa early 1900s, sits in front of a north facing jeweled stained glass window at Calvary Episcopal Church. Sanders said the font is in memory of children who died young in the early 20th century. So many died before age 5, he added.
