Railton micro-brewery Seven Sheds invited people to pick hops and reconnect with Tasmania's beer-brewing roots on Saturday.
RAILTON brewery Seven Sheds invited people to pick hops and reconnect with Tasmania's beer-brewing roots on Saturday.
Although the annual hop-picking day attracted fewer people than expected, Seven Sheds owner and brewer Willie Simpson was impressed with the efforts of those who helped harvest the crop.
"To be honest it was very quiet, but we had enough volunteer pickers that we managed to pick all the remaining hops before it started to rain," Mr Simpson said.
HOP TO IT: Cathy and Stephen Kettle joing in the fun of picking hops.
"We actually picked a record harvest of that particular variety."
It is the brewery's eighth year growing hops and this year's pickings will be turned into a single batch Leggett Indian Pale Ale.
The annual harvest attracted a few families, "which was what happened back in the day" Mr Simpson said.
"Families would go and camp for weeks on end and pick the hops," he said.

The Tsarnaev trial continued Monday at the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse with the testimony of three Watertown policemen recounting their experiences from the night of April 18, 2013.
Patrol officer Joseph Reynolds, Sgt. John MacLellan and Sgt. Jeffrey Pugliese testified Monday at the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse about their involvement in aconfrontation in Watertown with Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. PHOTO BY ALEXANDRA WIMLEY/DAILY FREE PRESS STAFF
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 21, is charged with 30 federal counts, to which he has pled not guilty. He allegedly placed two bombs at the Boston Marathon finish line in 2013, killing three and injuring more than 260.
Before the officers testimony, jurors in the case were brought to an undisclosed location in South Boston for about 30 minutes to view the boat in which Tsarnaev allegedly hid from law enforcement after the April 18, 2013, shootout in Watertown. The boat, Slipaway II, was placed under three large white tents, and alongside the jurors was suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was unshackled and surrounded by security, the Associated Press told media at the trial.
The Slipaway II, previously owned by David and Beth Henneberry of Watertown, was displayed within the boat trailer, which sat elevated in a flatbed. Jurors examined the boat attentively and were elevated in pairs of two by a cage-like device in order to see the details within the boat, the AP reported.
Along the inside of the boat were messages written in pencil, blood streaks and along the bottom were two wooden slats with the message carved stop killing our innocent civilians. At least 110 bullet holes were counted lining all sides of the boat, all of which were marked with evidence tape, they said.
Later on Monday, the officers offered their accounts of the Watertown firefight.

As Reynolds prepared for patrol duty, photos of the alleged Boston Marathon bombers were released. By the time Reynolds reported for roll call, he learned that Massachusetts Institute of Techology police officer Sean Collier had been shot and killed.
At 12:28 a.m., Reynolds said he received the call about a carjacking of a black Mercedes SUV, and was told to be on the lookout for the vehicle. Reynolds started heading toward the reported carjacking and spotted a black Mercedes-Benz on Dexter Street in Watertown. He identified the vehicle as a match to the description and pursued the vehicle from a distance.

TALLAHASSEE, FL -
Information from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection:
This week the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Clean Water State Revolving Fund disbursed an additional $14,261,486 to Cape Coral, bringing the total project loans to $71 million, to enable the city to expand its potable water, sanitary sewer and irrigation water infrastructure to meet future demands of its growing community.
The department is proud to support projects like this one, which benefit both our natural resources and communities, said DEP Secretary Jon Steverson.
This project will provide potable water and municipal sewer services to approximately 5,200 residential lots, which are currently served by on-site septic tank/drainfield systems and potable water wells. Residents will have access to a more reliable water supply and sewer system. Moreover, water resources will be better protected by utilizing the city's unified water supply and pollution control program, a 25-year effort by Cape Coral officials and the South Florida Water Management District to safeguard residents' quality of life while also protecting natural resources.
In addition to pumping stations and other equipment, this project consists of more than 700,000 feet of irrigation and wastewater lines that will improve water reuse and reduce impacts to the environment by reducing overall withdrawals from natural freshwater aquifers and minimizing potential groundwater pollution in both canals and drain fields.
The state revolving funds allow the city of Cape Coral to continue moving forward with these essential utilities projects, said Paul Clinghan, Cape Coral's utilities extension program manager. These loans enable the City to keep the overall costs to our property owners lower than other available financing options.
The Clean Water State Revolving Fund program was established in 1989 to provide low-interest financing for the planning, design and construction of wastewater and stormwater facilities, in compliance with the Clean Water Act. This program has awarded nearly $4 billion in loans since its inception, providing more than $1.4 billion in funding for 96 projects in just the past five years. Funded by federal grants, state matching funds, loan repayments and interest earnings, state revolving fund loans are offered at low interest rates. Repayments from earlier loans are used to make new loans, allowing the program to continue operating.

DeKALB With construction and design work winding down at Ellwood Steak and Fish House, developer John Pappas says he is ready to train his new staff and open the restaurant in a few weeks.
Pappas announced a plan to open the business, a combination of a bar and restaurant at 2219 Sycamore Road in DeKalb, in part of the new retail center he built on the former Smalls Furniture City site.
Pappas said he finished most of the construction including the kitchen and some of the interior over the past three months. Although he has yet to settle on an opening date, Pappas said he plans to open the steakhouse in late March or early April.
"We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but a month is plenty of time, and we are going to be ready for the challenge," he said. "We can't wait."
The Ellwood Steak and Fish House takes up 4,200 square feet in the retail center, or about a third of the building. The space will house a restaurant and a bar separated by the entrance. As part of the decor, Pappas said the restaurant will have an 1879 historic lounge that will feature some pieces of DeKalb's history.
"We are going to stand alone on our quality, atmosphere, pricing and presentation," he said.
Pappas received $432,900 in tax increment financing incentives from the City of DeKalb for the $4.2 million development. He has more than six years left to repay the citys investment through sales and property tax revenues generated by the development.
As part of the agreement, herazed the former Small's Furtnitureto make way for the 12,950-square-foot strip shopping center. American Mattress, the first tenant, opened in November. But sales tax revenue from American Mattress does not count toward reimbursing the city because it's not listed as one of the designated uses in the contract between Pappas and the city, according to the May 2013 development agreement.
After living in DeKalb for 35 years, Pappas said the restaurant was his way to give back to the community.
I think the town lacks this type of a restaurant that's really not available anywhere, and people do drive out of town for fine dining," he said.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- A Downtown Topeka restaurant that's been around for 2 decades is struggling to keep its doors open.
Marliu Borrego and her family have gone through many family struggles. Two of her brothers used to work at the restaurant--however one passed away 7 years ago and the other moved to Mexico.
"Mexican food, you know burritos, enchiladas, tacos, tostadas," says Borrego.
She says ever since her mother, the owner of Lupita's, has been sick, she's been working double time as the new operator of the restaurant.
"She has been very sick for past year, like 4 or 5 times out of hospital and it's very hard, it's very difficult. It's very difficult because sometimes when we are short, I have to work 14-15 hours," says Borrego.
Borrego's father, 74-year-old, Tomas Munoz, also helps out part time-serving customers like Max Williams who has been coming in for the past 20 years.
"They got good service and the food is really good. It's all homemade, its original," says Williams.
"That's our secret! 20 years and we keep them coming," said Munoz.
Aside from the tasty food, Borrego and Munoz say there's been some family troubles, but also say road construction on Kansas Avenue almost caused the family to shut down the restaurant last December.
"Construction really hurt our business like 50 percent down," says Borrego.

The entrance of the new V Picasso, at 122 N. Neil St. in downtown Champaign.
CHAMPAIGN Construction workers are scurrying to finish Victor Fuentes' latest work of art: the V. Picasso wine bar and restaurant in downtown Champaign.
The new place at 122 N. Neil St., just south of Christopher's Fine Jewelry Design will feature all sorts of recycled decor: lots of barn wood on the bar and tables; tall, narrow stained-glass windows at the end of the entryway; and wrought-iron fencing from a home in Danville.
There's even a bowling alley lane, divided in half to form the back and seat of a long bench across one wall.
Look for wine bottles used in pendant lighting. You'll also find gas lanterns, tin ceilings and lots of local art on display.
Even the layout of V. Picasso is unique, incorporating areas that were once parts of a jewelry store, hair salon and coin shop.
"To merge them into something they were not meant to be it was a challenge," said Fuentes, 34, of Champaign.
But Fuentes is hopeful even confident that all the pieces will fall in place to allow an April opening.
Fuentes is no stranger to the restaurant business. He and his family operate the El Toro restaurant chain, and he also operates the Wedge Tequila Bar and Grill, with locations in downtown Champaign and Village at the Crossing in southwest Champaign.
