SINGAPORE: A significant amount of vegetation that once grew on the hill beside Bukit Batok MRT station has been cleared, about three months after it made headlines for being infested with hundred of rats.

However, the barren land is not the result of an operation to weed out rats, said pest controllers.

"I believe (authorities) are doing their so-called routine maintenance, but this time round they're doing a bit more. Actually, it comes after our exercise. They didn't want to do this earlier so as not to jeopardise the whole rodent removal exercise," said Mr Bernard Chan, general manager at Star Pest Control.

The hill had been declared "rat-free" in early January.

When contacted, the Housing and Development Board (HDB) said it was carrying out clearance to "better maintain the land". HDB said that the "bare" portion of the land is temporary as re-turfing is being carried out.

Star Pest Control said it has not discovered any new signs of rats in the area. It said the rodents could return if people do not dispose of food properly, or feed strays, providing a supply of food for the rats.

Green Light for Community Pest Control Project

Waikato Regional Council recently announced a $40,000 grant from their Environmental Initiatives Fund for NZ Landcare Trust to help establish a new community catchment group focussed on predator control in a wetland reserve outside a pest-free bird sanctuary at Lake Rotopiko near Ohaupo.

The National Wetland Trust has been working to establish a national wetland education centre in the area and has already built a pest proof fence around a site covering approximately 10 hectares, thanks to substantial grants from the Waikato River Clean-up Trust, Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust, Waikato Regional Council and others.

NZ Landcare Trust will use the funds to establish a community catchment care group to help control pests in a 30 hectare area of adjoining reserve land, and provide ongoing support for the work.

This work will contribute to a boost in wildlife values in a 30 hectare area of one of the best peat lake complexes in New Zealand, said the report to the Environmental Initiatives Fund committee.

NZ Landcare Trust Project Coordinator Nardene Berry said, "we have a great working relationship with the National Wetland Trust, where we have collaborated on a number of projects including WETMAK - the wetland monitoring and assessment kit. We are looking forward to working on the practical delivery of this exciting project."

Karen Denyer CEO National Wetland Trust added, "the project will build on the excellent work being carried out by the Waikato District Council, Waikato Regional Council, the Department of Conservation and the adjacent landowners, who have already built silt traps, fenced drains and planted buffers to maintain the quality of the Rotopiko complex, which by council assessment is one of the best in the region."

"Its a wholly collaborative approach in a significant headwater and leads down to other works in the catchment, providing the opportunity to create a showcase for the region just 15 mins from Hamilton." Karen concluded.

One of Santa Fes bedrock locally owned retail stores, Leishmans of Santa Fe, is closing its doors after almost 40 years in business.

The store at 504 W. Cordova Rd. today announced a going-out-of-business starting Thursday (March 19).

Owner John Stevenson died in April 2012, after a lengthy fight with Lou Gehrigs disease.Stevensons wife, Katie, has been operating the store since then.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. I continued to operate the business successfully, but I have other interests, including two elderly parents that require my assistance, she said in todays announcement. Its to a point that I feel like this is what John would have wanted me to do.

The store started as Brooms Furniture, located on the Plaza, in the 1960s. In the 1980s, the store was acquired by the Leishman furniture family of Albuquerque and renamed. After working at Leishmans for about three years, John Stevenson bought the business in the early 1990s. His customers and his employees were really Johns family, said Katie Stevenson.

The store became known especially as the go-to place in Santa Fe for good patio furniture.

John recognized the importance of outdoor furniture to our lifestyle in Santa Fe, said Katie Stevenson. Our climate allows us to live outdoors much of the year. John supplied the furniture that made us comfortable on our patios, adding extra rooms to our homes without involving a contractor. Leishmans has the largest patio furniture showroom in New Mexico, the store says.

Youd have to travel to Denver, Dallas or Phoenix to find a larger one, Mrs. Stevenson said.
