On Wednesday, in the opulence of a chandeliered room at the University of Louisville Alumni Club, former US Representative Romano Mazzoli gave a free talk at his alma mater. A Louisville native with 24 years experience in Congress, Mazzoli touched on international to local politics, as well as a short personal history.
Mazzoli said he was pre-disposed to do immigration work during his time in office. He is the child of German and Italian immigrants, who ran a tile company out of the basement of the family home.
Ill never forget, sitting in the dining room, and total strangers would parade through the dining room, and my dad would lead them to our bathroom to show the tile work he could do for them, he said.
In Congress,Mazzoli and Senator Alan Simpson of Wyoming wrote the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which became law in 1986.
The former Representativefilled the room with laughter and connected with the audience. Part of his talk became a roll call, where he showed his appreciation for various audience members.
Mazzoli told a story about a man named John, who thanked the former Representative for helping him get a job at the post office. After forty years and a successful career, John is now enjoying retirement.
This is what politics should be about, Mazzoli said.
Next, Mazzoli addressed international topics such as the conflict inUkraine, bankruptcy in Greece and ISIS in Iraq.
Mazzoli had no reservations about stating his point of view. Speaking about the recent visit to Congress by Israeli President Netanyahu, Mazzoli said, With all due respect as a leader of the nation of Israel, he showed high disregard and disrespect for our President.
Mazzoli was also highly complimentary of Mayor Fischers initiative of the new Code Louisville, a free software coding training program.

MORROW Morrow officials say they are considering a less-strict sprinkler system policy to encourage economic development in the area.
Council is expected to vote on this change at a called meeting Monday at 6 p.m. in city hall.
Our imperative directive is to try to take off some of the chains in terms of economic development if theyre not necessary, said Interim City Manager Sylvia Redic at the Jan. 27 council meeting where the issue was first discussed.
Mayor and council looked over the first official reading of the amendment Tuesday that should repeal extra fire code restrictions the city ordinances place on businesses. Instead, the city will follow the less-strict state fire safety codes.
Right now, Morrows codes require that buildings of any type construction or occupancy shall be protected throughout by an approved supervised sprinkler system. But fire Chief Mark Herendeen and fire Marshal Herb Jones said in at least two council meetings they felt the ordinance was overly cautious.
When you get into commercial buildings, a lot of them are Type I, Type II concrete block and steel and theres not that need for that level of fire protection, Herendeen said at the Jan. 27 meeting.
Herendeen and Mayor J.B. Burke implied at that meeting the change in codes could encourage smaller businesses to set up shop in Morrow since they wouldnt necessarily need to pay for the full cast-iron-pipe sprinkler system the city codes require for commercial buildings.
If the council members vote to change the ordinances, the fire department would need to examine each building and how it would be used and determine by state codes whether it would need a sprinkler system.
What we need to remember about the state fire code is its not a book its volumes of books, Redic said.
Sprinkler systems have been a haunting theme of the city since controversy surrounding Olde Towne Morrow, a botched development project the city closed in February 2011.

Residents at the citys Garden View Lodge may soon sleep a bit more soundly, following an investment of $840,000 to bring it up to fire code.
The money, announced by Lethbridge West MLA Greg Weadick at the seniors facility on Friday morning, will be allocated for the addition of sprinklers and other system upgrades.
This will create the safest environment possible for the residents, he said. Were so pleased and thrilled that this is going to happen in this facility. If there ever is a fire, theyll have the utmost, up-to-date equipment.
Most supported seniors housing built before 1990 doesnt have adequate fire suppression Weadick said Garden View Lodge, which opened in 1992, is the last such building in the city that needs it, although he didnt provide an exact timeframe for when the work will be completed.
The newer part of the complex, which is an independent seniors residence of the Green Acres Foundation, has a sprinkler system, however. Bill Martens, the foundations chairman, said his staff has been lobbying the government for quite awhile for money to upgrade the building.
Green Acres has always taken the safety of the seniors into consideration. We really appreciate the fact that the government has decided to give this money to the Green Acres Foundation for the sprinklers at Garden View Lodge, Martens said.
