The sisters are back.

After waiting 18 months for their new residence to be built, the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur are returning en masse to Buffalos West Side.

The residence, located on Lafayette Avenue between an old convent and a newer administrative building, primarily will house retired sisters. They began moving in this week.

The work also included an overhaul of the convent, where sisters who are still working will live. Together, the buildings will accommodate about 25 women, a third of the entire order.

The Catholic order of women religious has deep roots in Western New York.

The sisters were badly in need of better living space, especially for the elderly and infirm among them.

Its the largest concentration of St. Mary of Namur nuns to live in a single location in many years.

But the orders leaders said the new facilities werent built solely for their comfort.

They chose to stay on the West Side to make a difference, especially among a population of new immigrants who need help learning English and understanding American culture.

We want to be at the heart of where theres still outreach, said Sister Judith Carroll, provincial superior. If we had gone to a place out farther, it wouldnt have, I dont think for us, that possibility of continuing the mission. Even as reduced as it may be, thats part of who we are.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - The weekend is finally here, and you want to enjoy a good meal at your favorite restaurant.

But before you walk out the door, here's what you need to know about how some local eateries did in their inspections from the Department of Health in this week's 'Restaurant Scorecard.'

Starting with 'Tortas Y Licuados La Poblanita' in Myrtle Beach: they got an 86. Infractions include a half-eaten sandwich that was found on the prep surface. The walls and ceilings under construction are not finished with smooth, easy to clean surfaces. A temporary plastic sheeting used for the wall is not in place. They were cooking under unfinished ceilings.

'Ole Shillelagh Sports Bar' got an 88 out of 100 from inspectors. Containers holding chicken wings had build-up and there was greasy build-up in the interior of the fryers.

In Murrells Inlet, 'Dockside Restaurant' got an 88 as well. Deductions from the department of health were because raw meats were stored over ready-to-eat products on the speed racks and in prep coolers.

Finally 'Shiver Me Pinchers' in Myrtle Beach and 'El Cerro Grande' in North Myrtle Beach both got a score of 98.

VALPARAISO | Home remodeling was on the mind of Jan Baird as she gathered ideas at the 37th Home & Lifestyle Show on Friday.

"I'm trying to get a lot of ideas and this is a good idea spot. ... I like to talk to people in person and this is a one stop shop to meet the someone who might be coming into your home," Baird said.

Baird, who is looking to replace her gas fireplace with a wood burning one in her Lowell home, stopped to chat at the booth of Albert Bailitz.

Bailitz, owner of Albert the Chimney Sweep and one of the numerous vendors at the show, agreed with Baird.

"This is a good place to come and ask questions whether it's for 10 minutes or 30 and it's also very low pressure," Bailitz said.

The home show, which continues on Saturday and Sunday at the Porter County Expo Center, 215 Division Road, is sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Northwest Indiana (HBA), said Vicki Gadd.

Gadd, who serves as the executive officer of the HBA, said there are 102 vendors at the show with a wide range of products.

Items showcased run the gamut and include exhibitors offering all kinds of products and services -- builders, landscapers, lighting, furniture and refinishing.

"We have the show at a time when people are thinking of remodeling. They have been cooped up all winter and ready to get started on a project," Gadd said.

Barb and Tom Shirey of Valparaiso brought along their grandson, Zac Horn, 8, to just look around with no specific remodeling projects in mind.
