Girls at the Tin Sheds: Sydney Feminist Posters 1975-90 celebrates the women artists and postermakers of the University of Sydney's Tin Sheds; a space which started as an experiment in alternative art education, and became an important hothouse for social and political debates during the 1970s and 80s.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of International Women's Year, the University Art Gallery exhibition presents original posters on feminism, the environmental movement as well as Aboriginal and migrant rights. However, according to exhibition curator Katie Yuill, the women's movement was by far the most important.
"The exhibition opens in the heated climate of 1975with its struggles for gender equality galvanised by International Women's Year, outrage at the sacking of the Whitlam Government and building tensions over the environment and Aboriginal land rights," Ms Yuill said.
The women's movement was central to a diverse range of art forms, campaigns, parties and projects instigated at the Tin Sheds, and posters were each movement's public face.
According to Senior Curator of the University Art Gallery, Dr Ann Stephen: "Posters would be plastered along the corrugated fence on City Road that supported things such as the sexual politics of liberation with headings such as 'Why should women always be responsible for contraception?' or promoting a feminist aesthetic with headlines such as 'Women propose a new feminist cinema' or just advertising another 'Frock rock' benefit that showed feminists to be not just overall-clad amazons on the march, but also femme fatales on the dance floor.
"The instigators of the Tin Sheds were 'counter-culture' architects and artists who sought to offer art workshops to architecture and art history students as well as providing 24-hour open access to a wider community. A precarious marginality was part of its edgy sociality, as students rubbed shoulders with a motley bunch of artists, filmmakers, musicians, and a gamut of political activists from the Women Behind Bars group to the local Aboriginal community."
The exhibition will be drawn from the University's extensive Tin Sheds poster holdings spanning the University Art collection and the University's Tin Sheds' archive. It includes work from artists including Marie McMahon, Jan Mackay, Toni Robertson, Jean Clarkson, Pam Debenham, Jan Fieldsend, Angela Gee, Leonie Lane and Avril Quail.

Decades before Banksy took political messages, made them sexy and infiltrated society with street art, a group of Sydney women were already on the case.
The University of Sydney's Tin Sheds workshop space was a hotbed of female artistic expression, producing an arsenal of posters tackling feminist issues, anti-nuclear crusades and Aboriginal land rights.
To tie-in with the 40th anniversary of International Women's Year, Girls at the Tin Sheds: Sydney Feminist Posters 1975-90 is an exhibition featuring 76 posters from a vault of more than 800 which vividly depict the discourse of the time.

Artist Marie McMahon, who has several works in the exhibition, says they saw themselves as outsiders to the mainstream art establishment, inspired by acts like the Sex Pistols and the Clash.

"There was a lot of rather dry propaganda around but I think we brought a bit of aesthetics and excitement to the way we presented ideas," McMahon says.
"A lot of it is rough. You look back and think, well, yeah, the printing was pretty dodgy and some of the design could be a bit amateurish at times but there's also that energy, there's that spirit that comes out of that roughness."

New information recently released by CPS sheds light on the case of late 2-month-old Justice Hull, the baby girl whom Dallas police say was drowned by a 14-year-old.
The report gives a detailed look at multiple CPS cases involving Justice and her two older siblings.
A summary indicates that over the course of four-and-a-half years, there were as many as nine complaints and four separate investigations dealing with the siblings allegedly suffering abuse.
Justice died Jan. 26 at the home of a family friend whom CPS approved as a temporary caregiver. The teen suspect who lived at that home is charged with murder.
Justice's mother, Keshondria Hull, was released from Dallas County's Lew Sterrett Jail after Justice's death to attend her funeral.
Some details from the CPS report include how Justice's temporary caregiver at the apartment where she died had requested additional help from the state because her 19-year-old son who was watching Justice for periods of time would be returning to school.
The report states, "The caregiver requested daycare assistance twice and was denied general protective daycare assistance as the investigation was identified for closure."
An overall look at the cases involving all three siblings began in September 2011. Complaints concerning the oldest included medical neglect, physical abuse and neglectful supervision.
A case involving Keshondria's second child included allegations of physical abuse and neglectful supervision.
Just two weeks after Justice was born, there was a complaint of neglectful supervision.
