The paulownia trees in the car park of the Bathurst Library have grown too big for their boots.
WRONG CHOICE: Damage to the car park of the Bathurst Library caused by paulownia trees.
THE paulownia trees in the car park of the Bathurst Library have grown too big for their boots.
They have been maturing into large specimens for the past 20 years, giving much-needed shade to vehicles at the popular public facility off Keppel Street. However, their days now appear to be numbered.
Although the trees are in good health, it turns out theyre now not suited to that type of location with their invasive roots damaging the sealed road pavement and ripping gutters apart.
After receiving several complaints from users of the library about the problem, Bathurst Regional Council has now decided its time to act.
A report to tomorrow nights ordinary monthly meeting for February details the saga of the paulownia trees.
It recommends the trees be removed from the car park ahead of the restoration of the road pavement and concrete kerbing around the traffic islands.
There are also plans to upgrade all garden bed areas, incorporating new shade tree plantings, associated shrubs and ground covers.

Angel's trumpet is heavenly -

Brugmansia or angel's trumpet. Photo: Robin Powell
Plant common names are annoyingly imprecise but they often capture the appeal of a plant better than their real names. Take Brugmansia, better known as angel's trumpet. For once this isn't a case of common hyperbole. The flowers really are the size of a trumpet, albeit a small one, and have an angelic elegance about them. Some even have petals that curve upwards in slender, wing-likeribbons. The flowers are so lovely it seems a shame their real name comes from a Dutch physician, Sebald Justinus Brugmans, who was an expert in the treatment of gangrene.
While Brugmansia have nothing to do with gangrene, they do serve as medicine for indigenous people in Central and South America. They are used as medicine; in negotiations with the spirit world; and in what ethnobotanists describe as "chemically-triggered ethno-psychotherapy". All parts of the plants are poisonous, and they contain psychoactive substances. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived in what is now Bogota, Colombia, in 1537, the locals drugged them with a Brugmansia-laced drink, and sent them all into wild hallucinations. Attempts by Australians to experiment with this aspect of the plant (median age 18, 82 per cent male) have led to hospitalisation for tachycardia and delirium, with associated accidental injury.
The history and cultural uses of the plant are fascinating (find out more in Huanduj: Brugmansia, written by Australian expert Alistair Hay and published by Florilegium) but the best reason to grow is that it is a fantastic adornment for Sydney gardens. Every drenching rain is followed a few weeks later by an amazing show of flowers that covers the whole plant. In my frost-free garden, Brugmansias flower all year, or until I prune them. They are apt to drop leaves and flowers when the chill sets in and are at their dramatic best now and into autumn. The most common form is apricot, though there are also white, gold and any number of shades of pink. Bees love them and a big shrub in full bloom is abuzz with action.
Brugmansia can be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub, or trained to a single stem like a small tree. They can be pruned and kept to a desired size or left alone, save for the removal of dead growth and rubbing branches. You can arrange for a canopy of flower atop a border, or for flowers right down to ground level, depending on how you use the secateurs from early in the plant's life. They need sun for good flowering, and though a hot summer afternoon will make them limp they'll bounce back at dusk. As night falls they will start to release their perfume, which given their common name, I just have to describe as heavenly.

John Westbrook, general manager of Menlo Park Mall, left to right; Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey; and Robert Guerra, Northeast regional vice president of Simon Property Group, break a ceramic tile to officially mark the impending start of the major renovation at Menlo Park Mall. EDISON Shoppers at the Menlo Park Mall will start seeing some changes this spring.
Simon Property Group, the malls owner, will begin a substantial renovation project in April.
Simon and township officials, including Mayor Thomas Lankey, participated in a tile-breaking ceremony on Jan. 21 to commemorate the impending start of work, which includes both interior and exterior transformations.
After many months of planning, we are pleased to unveil the details of this project to our fashion-forward shoppers and retailers, said Menlo Park Mall General Manager John Westbrook in a prepared statement on the project. Menlo Park Mall already serves as one of central New Jerseys premier destinations for shopping, dining and entertainment. These enhancements will create a more contemporary look for the center, along with additional upgrades and amenities that will better fulfill the needs of our customers and visitors.
One primary focus of the work is the creation of a new dining pavilion, replacing the existing food court. In addition, the malls Center Court will be remodeled into a social gathering area with seating, electronics charging stations and a modernized elevator. Guest Services also will be relocated to Center Court from the second floor. New seating areas will be placed throughout the mall. Simon also is overhauling entrances, bathrooms, flooring and tile. Energy-efficient lighting will be installed, and the parking garage will also receive cosmetic enhancements.
Lankey praised the efforts going into the renovations.
Menlo Park Mall is one of Edisons gems. For decades, this mall has been a community attraction that brings scores of people from across New Jersey in our community, he said. This has a significant economic trickle-down effect for many of our other retailers and food service businesses.
Mall officials said the work schedule is designed to minimize impact on shoppers; the project is slated for November completion.

DERRY -- Fire officials say a residential sprinkler system helped knock down an intense garage fire at 3 Alder Court on Monday, and also helped save a 14-year-old girl who was home at the time.
The girl was in the basement and unaware of the fire in the attached garage until she noticed water running from the sprinkler system and saw smoke filling the house. After seeing the garage was on fire, she was able to escape, said Derry fire Lt. Jack Webb.
The forward progress of the fire in the garage was stopped until firefighters could arrive and extinguish the blaze.
That sprinkler system stopped the fire, Webb said, adding it allowed the little girl to get out of the house.
Firefighters were able rescue a small dog that was uninjured, he said.
The first call came into the dispatch center at 3:36 p.m. and crews were on the scene at 3:44 p.m., Webb said.
When they arrived, the garage was fully involved, with fire above the roof line.
Firefighters from four stations responded to the blaze that went to two alarms, Webb said. Crews had to contend with bitter cold and icy conditions. There were also five other calls that occurred in town during the fire, including a major sprinkler system burst at Shaw's Supermarket.
The crews poured a lot of water onto the garage of the two-story Colonial-style house and the fire was declared under control at about 5 p.m., Webb said
Crews remained on the scene until 7:23 p.m. for overhaul and to assist the family members recover their belongings.

DERRY, N.H. A fire in a garage almost trapped a teenage girl inside an adjoining house after one of her exits was blocked by snow, but a sprinkler head deployed, buying enough time for her to scamper out the other exit to safety, firefighters said.
Firefighters, who had been called by neighbors, arrived Monday evening to find flames engulfing the two-car garage and beginning to spread into the 2 1/2-story wood-frame home in Derry. The garage collapsed with big parts of the roof intact, suppressing the fire below the roof and making it more difficult to put out the flames, firefighters said.
A 14-year-old girl was home at the time of the fire. The home was protected by a sprinkler system, and one sprinkler head between the garage and the home was activated, unleashing water onto the flames and preventing most of the fire from spreading to the house, firefighters said.
The girl was in the home's basement, but the "secondary exit out of the basement was blocked by snow," firefighters said.
The girl, aided by the sprinkler, scrambled out of the basement's primary exit and made it out through the home's front door, firefighters said. Without the sprinkler system, they said, the fire would have blocked her exit.
No injuries were reported in the fire, whose cause hadn't been determined. Firefighters found and rescued a dog, which was uninjured.
The sprinkler system ran out of water while firefighting crews used their hoses. Part of the fire extended into the home's attic and the roof of a porch.
The home's living area was damaged by smoke and water and will be uninhabitable until it's professionally cleaned, firefighters said. The garage was destroyed.
The fire loss, including the garage's contents, was estimated to be $150,000.

MESA - A fire quickly put out by sprinklers saved residents of a retirement living community in Mesa Monday morning, according to fire officials.
The fire began after flammable material was left on top of a stove in the three-story complex, located near Main Street and Recker Road, according to the Mesa Fire Department. The fire did not spread farther than the kitchen, and was extinguished by an in-house sprinkler system.
Several residents were displaced due to smoke and water damage, the department added. It is unknown how many residents were displaced, but officials know of at least three apartments damaged by the water flow from the sprinkler.
No one was injured in the fire.
Fire officials said the quick suppression of the fire saved the lives of those residing in the complex and the property from suffering major damage.
