Seven Unusual Tax Deductions -
March 9, 2015 by
Mr HomeBuilder
We have all heard cases of strange failed tax deductions, such as writing off a personal racehorse as a business entertainment expense, a toothless actor being unable to write off his dentures, and our personal favorite a business owner who had his store burned by an arsonist, claimed the insurance as income, and tried to deduct the arsonists $10,000 fee as a business expense. Some people just dont know when to stop.
However, there are more than a few odd tax write-offs that do manage to pass IRS scrutiny, or are later approved by the Tax Court. They probably will not apply in your case, but who knows.
1. Addiction Treatment Certain types of addiction treatments may be written off under Medical and Dental expenses. Examples include smoking cessation programs (but not nicotine gum or patches), weight loss expenses that are related to specifically diagnosed diseases such as obesity and high blood pressure, and inpatient treatment for alcohol and drug addiction.
For the majority of taxpayers, addiction treatment expenses (along with other medical and dental expenses) may be deducted beyond the threshold value of 10% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).
2. Breast Implants While cosmetic procedures are not normally deductible, an exotic dancer successfully argued that her breast implants were a necessary part of her business, and that without the implants, she would lose income to other exotic dancers. Insert your own joke here.
3. Breast Pumps Is anyone sensing a theme? Breast pumps as well as other devices to increase lactation for new mothers are deductible as necessary medical devices.
4. Clarinet Lessons Clarinet lessons in general are not deductible, but if they are part of an orthodontists regimen to help deal with an overbite, they may be deductible as a medical expense. The way a clarinet is positioned in the mouth decreases the pain of an overbite. Both the cost of the clarinet and the lessons may be deducted.
5. Guard Animals If you use a guard dog or other animal to protect your property, you may be able to deduct some of the costs of caring for that guard animal. The Tax Court even allowed cat food to be deducted for a cat that was deemed necessary to a junkyard to keep it free of rats and snakes. Presumably, you would have a difficult time deducting a guard opossum or halibut.
6. Pet Moving Expenses Moving expenses associated with job relocation include the expenses of relocating your pet, and all of those expenses are deductible above-the-line meaning they reduce your adjusted gross income (AGI) and can be taken whether or not you itemize.
These expenses may not be much if your move is a relatively short drive but shipping your dog or cat across the country is relatively expensive not to mention transporting your horse.

Maybe it's time to erect temporary, "proceed with caution" signs at the entrances to Chicago's Jackson and Washington parks. The signs would be directed not at drivers, but at President Barack and Michelle Obama, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Barack Obama Foundation.
I thought of the need for caution as I made my way through a fascinating new doorstop of a book, "The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted: The Last Great Projects, 1890-1895." Its 1,067-pages offer revealing glimpses into the mind of America's greatest landscape architect, including his dealings with architect Daniel Burnham as the two titans planned the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Jackson Park.
The letters express the essence of Olmsted's approach: Naturalistic scenery is preferable to formal pomp; the parts of a landscape should be subordinate to the whole; details matter as much as the grand sweep of things oh do they matter!
To enliven Jackson Park's lagoons for the 1893 fair, Olmsted brought in about 50 electric launches, with colorful awnings, and imported from Venice 20 gondolas, complete with their gondoliers. The chief purpose of the boats, he told Burnham, was less to get fair-goers from Point A to Point B than to provide delightful scenery.
"Put in the waters unbecoming boats and the effect would be utterly disgusting," Olmsted wrote Burnham, who was considering the use of more cost-effective but less attractive craft.
Under normal circumstances, such observations might be of interest only to scholars and fans of landscape architecture.
But they take on fresh relevance as the Chicago-based Obama Foundation nears a decision on which of four competing proposals from Columbia University in New York, the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the University of Chicago will win the Obama presidential library and museum bake-off. Obama met with his foundation's leaders last week during his stop in Chicago to make the Pullman district a national monument.
Olmsted's parks are national treasures. They demand to be treated with the utmost care, not trampled in a rush for economic growth. As I read Olmsted's letters, I had to wonder: What would he have thought of the U. of C.'s proposals, in which the Obama library would rise in either Jackson Park or Washington Park, another Olmsted design?
"He was generally averse to adding different types of structures to the parks," said the co-editor of the new Olmsted book, David Schuyler, a professor at Franklin & Marshall College. "He thought it compromised the very purpose of having a large urban park."
Building the Obama library along, rather than in, public parkland would be an ideal compromise. That can't be done at the 21-acre Jackson Park site, all of which lies within the park. But it could happen along Washington Park if the library were to be built solely on the 11-acre portion of the site that's outside the park's borders. Leave Washington Park itself alone and all the talk about land grabs and lawsuits would go away.

The ever-changing landscape of the NFL continued late this week. The Atlanta Falcons announced the release of running back Steven Jackson, via Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com, on Thursday, and the Arizona Cardinals parted ways with defensive tackle Darnell Dockett, according to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com, on Friday.
These are just two examples of moves that will ultimately help shape the 2015 NFL draft.
Will teams draft replacements for these players this year? That's a strong possibility; however, it may not be in the first round. There are plenty of factors that must come into play to make that situation come to fruitionschematic fits and prospect availability among them.
Let's take the Falcons for instance. They pick at No. 8 overall. Sure, they could snag Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon or Georgia's Todd Gurleybut would that be worth missing out on one of the draft's elite pass-rushers? Probably not. So, in this situation, we can expect Atlanta to look for a running back in the draft's middle roundswhere potential steals reside.
Which prospects appear to be the mid-round gems in this year's draft class? Before we take a look at some examples, here's an updated glance at how the first round is likely to shake out.
Analyzing Potential Mid-Round Steals
Mid-round steals can be a variety of things. These prospects could have sneaky starting potential and produce some impressive numbers out of the gate during their rookie seasons. They could also be athletic freaks who have the talent to dominate in the NFL after receiving the right coaching.
Every draft is chock-full of players who fit one of those aforementioned descriptions. The trick for NFL franchises is to figure out who they are. That said, let's take a look at some potential candidates.
