Collect water now to irrigate garden later - March 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Melinda Myers

Too much or not enough water and never when you need it. That seems to be the long-time plight of gardeners. Add to this extended droughts, flooding and watering bans. What is a gardener to do? Become a water-wise gardener.

Water wise is not just about growing drought tolerant plants or eliminating plantings. It is a holistic approach to managing water to avoid flooding that overwhelms sewer systems, improper watering that wastes water, and poor landscape designs that generate too much work and require too many resources.

Make this the season that you incorporate a few waterwise habits into your gardening. Youll find it is good for your garden, the environment and your pocketbook. Start with one or more of these strategies this year.

Select the right plant for the growing conditions. Plants that thrive in normal growing conditions for your area will be healthier, require less care and need less water. Look for drought tolerant plants that require less water once established.

Keep water out of the storm sewers and in the garden instead. Prevent flooding while improving your garden. Adding several inches of compost to the top 8 to 12 inches of soil increases the soils ability to absorb and retain water. This means less runoff into the storm sewers and less frequent watering.

Use plants to prevent runoff and conserve water. Plant trees, shrubs, and groundcovers to slow the flow of rainwater, increase the amount of water that stays in your landscape for your plants, and to filter water before it enters the groundwater. Install one or more rain gardens to intercept surface water runoff for use by rain garden plants and to help recharge the groundwater.

Provide plants with a healthy diet. Use a slow release non-leaching organic nitrogen fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite.com). Youll encourage slow steady growth, so your plants will require less water and be less prone to insect and disease problems. Plus, the slow release nitrogen encourages healthy growth and does not prevent flowering and fruiting.

Water wisely. Water plants thoroughly and only when needed. Water the soil, not the plant, using a watering wand, drip irrigation or a soaker hose so less water is lost to evaporation. Water early in the morning whenever possible to reduce water loss during the heat of the day and diseases caused by wet foliage at night.

BlazeAid mends fences - March 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MORE than 158 people have completed 980 days of work for volunteer-based organisation BlazeAid, which helps rebuild fences destroyed by natural disasters such as the Sampson Flat bushfire.

The first deployment of BlazeAid volunteers in SA was on January 20.

Since then, 155 families have registered for assistance, 43 projects started, 16 completed and 11 no longer required assistance.

BlazeAid administrator Lyn Bailey, Vic, who has been in SA since January 17, said most families assisted had been lifestyle property owners.

"We help people who are uninsured or underinsured," she said.

"Generally, property owners need to supply their own materials but if they cannot afford to then sometimes we can help through donations.

"If people are fully insured then they need to get contractors in, but sometimes insurance doesn't cover clearing of old fences so we can help with clearing in that instance."

Lyn said volunteers in SA had also helped chainsaw trees, move timber and sometimes had the capacity to assist with repair and maintenance-type tasks.

BlazeAid has set up a base camp at the former Lenswood Research Centre.

With some volunteers having come from interstate, there is also a camp ground full of tents and caravans.

Thousands take to the streets of London to demand action on climate change - March 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

She said, We are the forces of life. We are the ones with the way forward. The politicians over there are afraid because they dont know what to do. The policies we want are the ones that will make the world a better and fairer place for everyone anyway. That should give us boldness and courage.

TUC general secretary Frances OGrady sent a message of support. And Chris Baugh from the PCS union explained that the technology exists to slash emissions now and create jobs in the process, as CCCs Million Jobs report makes clear.

Matt Wrack, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, spoke about its campaign to nationalise the energy companies. He said, Its sick that people can die of cold while energy companies profits go through the roof. Its sick that this system leaves the power in the hands of people who dont care about our future, but their profits. Weve got to take the power back.

Bangladeshi campaigner Rumana Hashem, comedian Francesca Martinez, and left wing Labour MP John McDonnellwhose constituency is threatened by the expansion of Heathrow airportalso spoke. So did speakers from organisations including Greenpeace, Caat, Avaaz, Peoples Assembly, Axe Drax, Frack Free Lancashire, Stand Up to Racism, UK youth against climate change and the French climate coalition.

There are many challenges ahead for the climate movement. But it is bouncing back from the demoralisation that followed the disastrous United Nations climate talks in Copenhagen in 2009. And anti-capitalist ideas are getting more and more of a hearing.

In three weeks time a day of debates is set to take place in London around the ideas in activist and author Naomi Kleins influential book This Changes Everything. In it, she argued that climate change cannot be addressed without taking on the whole system.

In a video message, Klein told protesters to build around those ideas for protests at the Paris climate summit in December, and beyond. She said, We have nine months to reach out to people who arent here yet to be part of the next climate movement.

We need an economy that is 100 percent powered by renewables. We need to transform not just how the power is generated, but who controls it. There has never been a better time to think big.

We bailed out the banksand weve paid for it. No way are we bailing out the fossil fuel companies.
