Rat population on rise in the Berkshires, pest control companies report - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Photo Gallery | Pest Inspections

Pest control outfits working in the Berkshires say business is booming lately with rats.

Chris Quinn, operations director of Catseye Pest Control out of Castleton-on-Hudson, N.Y., said he's responded to 12 homes and eight businesses with rat issues this winter, a 50 percent increase over last year.

"Seemingly the population is growing or at least moving around," Quinn said.

Local rat issues are primarily concentrated to Pittsfield. Several cases in neighborhoods west of upper North Street saw Catseye remove upward of a dozen of the creatures each time.

But other residential rat calls in Cheshire, Great Barrington and Stockbridge Quinn called "complete surprises," and he said the company has also done work on River Street in Williamstown.

"It's odd how they pop up in various areas," Quinn said.

It's not easy to get rid of rats.

Rats remember. If anything new, like a trap, appears, they avoid it until plied with food for a day or two, after which they become more comfortable and may approach the device.

    "They're diabolically clever," Quinn said.

ADDING and REPLACING Lighting Science and Global Good to Develop Light-Based Alternatives to Pesticides - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MELBOURNE, Fla. & BELLEVUE, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Add "Forward-Looking Statements" to the release issued March 3, 2015 at 9:00 a.m. ET.

    The corrected release reads:

Lighting Science Group Corporation and Intellectual Ventures Global Good today announced a research agreement to collaborate on the development of next-generation light technologies for pest control. Based on Global Goods photonic fence invention and Lighting Sciences light-control technology, the joint development effort will focus on field-ready prototypes that offer an environmentally-responsible alternative to chemical pesticides. Lighting Science plans to leverage this development effort to create a new company to bring highly efficient and effective pest control products for health, commercial and residential use around the world.

Combining low-cost sensors and laser technology with software to identify, track, and eliminate insects, the photonic fence device was first invented by Intellectual Ventures to address the spread of malaria in developing countries. In addition to its potential use for global health organizations fighting vector-borne diseases, the photonic fence technology also presents significant applications for one of the largest industries worldwide, agriculture.

What began by putting the worlds deadliest animal, the mosquito, in our sights with a laser, has opened up new advances in the way we can use light to protect communities and crops from a range of disease-bearing insects, said Maurizio Vecchione, senior vice president for Global Good and Research at Intellectual Ventures. For example, the export potential of high-value crops could increase dramatically if a light-based perimeter was available to both monitor and eliminate pests, instead of possibly unsafe or ineffective insecticides.

Under the research agreement, Global Good will license its photonic fence technology to Lighting Science to manage product development in both vector control for malaria and derivative inventions in agricultural systems, with a goal to commercialize for developing and developed world markets. Lighting Science CEO Ed Bednarcik predicts that, This collaborative product development could drive significant new advances in the intersection of biology and light. Lighting Science founder and Chief Technology Officer Fred Maxik added,The transformation of light into a digital technology that can be precisely controlled offers great promise in a number of fields especially human health and agriculture. Our experience working with NASA and other agencies has shown us that we can improve agricultural output without the use of harmful chemicals.

At Lighting Science, we are focused on solving the worlds problems using light, said Craig Cogut, Chairman of Lighting Science and founder and Managing Partner of Pegasus Capital Advisors. We believe that new applications of LED technology can democratize light, revolutionize incumbent industries, and improve the lives of billions. Collaborating with Global Good will help us to overcome global challenges and ensure that the environmental, health, and agricultural benefits of this transformation are shared globally."

4 quick ways to reduce your heating bill - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

WIXOM, Mich. (WJBK) - "You don't have to sacrifice comfort for energy efficiency or energy savings," says Bob Chapman, an energy educator at EcoWorks. EcoWorks is a Detroit nonprofit that focuses on energy efficiency.

He shares these four quick tips to reducing your heating bill:

    1) Check your patio doors

"Patio doors, or walk-out doors, can often be a real problem because there's so much area that could be leaky. And one of the places that I see it often is at the bottom where, over time, weather stripping wears down," he says.

He suggests putting plastic sheeting over the windows, or keep it covered with heavy drapery, especially if there's no sunlight to warm up the room.

Cold air can also come in the cracks around your front door. Use weather stripping to keep it out.

    2) Know when to use your fireplace

Make sure the damper is closed so warm air doesn't escape up the chimney.

"The rule of thumb is this. If it's below 20 degrees, don't use your fireplace because you are going to be losing more energy and more heat than you're gaining."

    3) Change your furnace filter

Scaffolding Services Procurement Category Market Research Report from IBISWorld has Been Updated - March 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) March 05, 2015

Scaffolding services have a buyer power score of 2.8 out of 5, indicating a moderate level of negotiating power for buyers. During the three years to 2014, buyer purchasing power has been hurt mainly by rising service prices and moderate market share concentration, says IBISWorld research analyst Deonta Smith, adding that prices are heavily dependent on trends in the residential, commercial and industrial construction markets.

The values of residential and nonresidential construction have risen strongly during the three years to 2014 as a result of the rebounding economy. In addition, corporate profit has been growing at a moderate rate, leading to greater demand for scaffolding services. In turn, these trends have led to moderate service price growth and, thus, reduced buyer power. In the three years to 2017, scaffolding services prices are forecast to continue rising, especially as commercial construction activity accelerates. According to Smith, Growth in nonresidential structure starts will bolster demand for contractors, which will further restrain buyers' ability to negotiate for lower prices.

Conversely, buyers benefit from a high level of competition among the numerous small suppliers in the market, who are engaging in price-based competition to win new customers and maintain or gain market share. In recent years, this trend has allowed buyers to pit multiple suppliers against each other, limiting suppliers' ability to raise prices significantly. Current suppliers include Brand Energy & Infrastructure Services Inc., The Brock Group and Safway Services LLC. Buyers also benefit from low price volatility, which allows for more accurate budget forecasts. Nevertheless, buyers working on multiple construction projects are advised to seek long-term service agreements with key suppliers to lock in current rates before they increase further.
