Mike 'Pikey' Pike with an englared version of the photo of him and his funny dunny taken in the 1980s. It had hung in the Perth offices of The Daily News until it shut in 1990.
To the unknowing observer it's just a picture of a man and his unique thunderbox, but when you delve deeper it is the tale of what could quite possibly be South Hedland's first tourist attraction.
The search to find Michael Pike and his toilet letterbox began when Pilbara News journalist Peter de Kruijff got into an argument with colleagues about just how much toilet was too much toilet to show in the newspaper.
Hoping to prove a point, de Kruijff delved into the WA News archives searching for toilet images and up came "this black and white cracker taken by The West Australian photographer Bill Hatto".
De Kruijff said he had once been on a ride-along with Hatto when the photographer had told him about his stint in Port Hedland in the 1980s.
"So I figured this gem must have been taken all the way back then and had a good laugh and sent it to you guys at the North West Telegraph," he said.
Not put off by Hatto's warning that the photo was taken sometime around 1985 when he worked for News of the North, the North West Telegraph tracked Pikey the Plumber down to a property in South Hedland with a little help from social media.
Laughing about the photo's reappearance almost 30 years after it was published, Pikey said the idea for the distinctive letterbox started with a conversation about junk mail.
"It was a bit of a conversation between myself and a bloke called Peter Withers; we were talking about all the crap mail you'd get ... and that it really should get flushed down the dunny," he said last week.
A plumber, Pikey belted together a toilet and cistern he had removed from a property and his mate Mr Withers created the sign, "Mail in here, C..p below", stuck to the front.

TROY The hardship of having no water has been particularly tough for one woman she's going through chemotherapy. Now, shes getting some help.
One plumber is donating his time. Thats because the plumbers mom had something to say about the situation.
While the city has been doing nothing to help the family get the water restored, a private plumbing company has stepped in to take care of things for them.
Early Thursday evening, water flowed into the homes pipes for the first time in 10 days.
This is an ongoing operation at the Daus family home on Fourth Street. Its a story of perseverance and good samaritanism. Most of all though its a story of motherly persuasion and wisdom.
For the last 10 days, the Daus family -- including Eric Daus and his terminally ill mother, had been living without water ever since their underground pipe froze shut.
At 2:30 Thursday afternoon, Matt Ward showed up with his plumbing truck, saying he will take care of everything.
In fact, Ward says he is on a mission from the highest authority his mom.
She told me to go over and see if I can give them a hand down here in Troy see what our company can do for them here. said Ward. When a mother says something, you usually listen.

Gregory Pest Solutions announced today that it will be making cash donations to the South Carolina Make-A-Wish Foundation for every person who is brave enough to eat a bug at their booth (#191) during the Southern Home and Garden Show this weekend March 6-8 at the TD Convention Center in Greenville, South Carolina.
The Southern Home and Garden Show is such a great event for our community that we wanted to do something different this year. We want to do something meaningful for one of our favorite charities, said Tim Baumgarten, Director of Business Development for Gregory Pest Solutions. Make-A-Wish has done so much good for so many families in South Carolina. We wanted more people to be aware of the great work they do. And we want to support their efforts. Just yesterday, we had ninety-five people eat a bug for charity at a trade show in Myrtle Beach. We think the Greenville community is just as adventurous, if not more so. We hope many will be able to come to the show and stop by Gregorys booth to eat a bug for charity! Phil Gregory, Chairman & CEO of Gregory Pest Solutions, sits on the Board of Directors of Make-A-Wish South Carolina.
Is eating a bug safe? Surprisingly, it isat least the way they will be offered for this charity event this weekend. The products that Gregory will be using as part of the charity fund raiser are from actual food suppliers who specialize in edible insects that are prepared, inspected, and marketed under the same guidelines and governmental oversight as other commercial-grade food products U.S. families consume every day. Gregory Pest Solutions does not recommend that anyone eat bugs right out of nature, however. Its best to source edible bugs from food suppliers with experience in proper insect preparation.
About Make-A-Wish Foundation in South Carolina
Make-A-Wish South Carolina is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.
Make-A-Wish South Carolina got its start with the first wish on November 10, 1984 with a child named Louis. Louis, age 5, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. His wish was to see a big time football game. He attended a home game at the Citadel in Charleston. He was presented with his own team uniform and was able to run out onto the field with the players. Louis watched the game not in the stands like the other fans, but on the benches with the players. Since then, the chapter has granted 2,000 wishes and continues to grant over 130 wishes throughout the state each year.

Gregory Pest Solutions has been a part of the Upstate of South Carolina since its founding in 1972 in Greenville. Since then, Gregory has grown quickly to cover eleven states throughout the Atlantic and Southeast regions and has become the thirty-seventh largest pest control company in the country.
