It isnt often that a designer in her twenties is celebrated in a national publication. Lynn K. Leonidas was thrilled when an Instagram photo of her San Francisco apartment led her to win a coveted three-page spread in design magazine, Domino. As a former editorial contributor for California Home + Design and Rue Magazine, she gained her experience behind the scenes and dreamed of the day her own work would find its place in those glossy pages.

After posting a photo of her home on Instagram and tagging #sodomino, the designer was hand-selected as one of four finalists, beating over two thousand other submissions. She was voted the winner by dedicated Domino readers.

In the designers Castro apartment, Lynns modern sensibility in creating layered interiors is highlighted by her arrangement of antique and contemporary pieces against a crisp color palette of mixed woods and clean white walls. The designer considered functionality as well as style when decorating her 1,000-square-foot space, creating versatile rooms where she and her husband could work and entertain. The stylish room attributed for Lynns Domino success is her home office, a space off of the living room that is expertly composed with antique heirloom furnishings, classic patterns, and a gallery wall of stunning astronomical illustrations sourced from 1950s textbooks. With its blend of personal artifacts and local artisanal pieces, Lynn creates a collected interior with a young, fresh approach.

Family loses pet in mobile home fire

A family lost their pet in a mobile-home fire Friday night. No one else was home at the time.

Dennis Leftwich and his grandson, Jordan Mulhouser, werent home when the fire broke out in a bedroom at their residence on Cullman County 1856 just south of Arab.

Leftwich arrived home to find flames coming from the residence and called 911 at 8:08 p.m.

Arab Fire and Rescue, along with Joppa and Four-C Volunteer Fire Departments, responded to the fire.

Arab Fire Chief Ricky Phillips said Tuesday the cause hasnt been determined but likely was an electrical fire.

Hed had some trouble with squirrels getting under the house and chewing up stuff, including electrical wires, Phillips said. We havent seen anything suspicious. Its most likely going to be an accidental fire caused by electrical wiring.

A city subcontractor hired to thaw frozen pipes nearly set a house in NDG-Cote-des-Neiges on fire last month.

The record-setting cold this season has been breaking water mains and freezing pipes all across the island, forcing the City of Montreal to hire private contractors to keep up with demand.

The worker sent an electrical current through the line - a common de-frosting method -- which sent flames into Greg McWhirters home on Harvard Ave.

His pipes frozen, McWhirter, heard a noise in the kitchen and was fortunate enough to act fast.

I saw flames coming up from behind the fridge, he said.

You're shocked! You go into a bit of a panic mode especially when you get a fire and then another fire and then a fire upstairs.

Along with the fridge, small fires started in the dishwasher, inside the furnace room and part of the natural gas line needed to be replaced with signs of heat damage.

It turns out that anything that was hooked up to the water main was passing current, said McWhirter.

His landlord said there was almost $14,000 worth of damage; she feels the borough should pay.
