Poachers are smashing through the Water Corporation's gates and fences to steal marron from creeks and dams that are supposed to be protected for public drinking supplies.
The State-owned utility has confirmed that it was grappling with the "issue" of marron poaching from properties it controls across the Perth Hills, South West and Great Southern.
Fishing for marron, a type of crayfish that is found in fresh inland waterways, is only allowed for a brief period between January 8 and February 5 each year.

Fishers are entitled to take five of the crustaceans a day - each with a minimum size of 90mm - in so-called trophy waters, while they can take eight a day of at least 80mm in size in all other open waters.
With this year's season just finished, the Water Corporation said it was investigating several incidents where people had illegally accessed protected drinking water catchments to pilfer marron.
In one instance, poachers crashed a four-wheel-drive through the gate of a Water Corporation property east of Albany after-dark to plunder dams that were full of marron, causing thousands of dollars of damage in the process.
A Water Corporation spokeswoman said the utility did not keep specific records of incidents of marron poaching and could not quantify the costs it had incurred from the activity in recent years. However, she noted that extra "catchment rangers" had been employed to patrol the Perth Hills in recent years.
The spokeswoman also pointed out marron fishing was allowed "in a number" of the utility's dams.
"Water Corporation works closely with the Department of Fisheries to control illegal fishing and marroning in drinking water dams and has initiated a number of successful prosecutions," she said.

Demolition work has begun on the Royal Hobart Hospital, nearly a year after the project was halted because of budget blowouts.
Tasmania's Health Minister, Michael Ferguson, is shrugging off a six-month delay in getting the redevelopment project underway again.
The Government put the $657 million project on hold last May, while a taskforce reviewed the project.
In December, Mr Ferguson confirmed it would proceed with some major changes and has now announced demolition works had recommenced.
Mr Ferguson said the project on the Liverpool Street site was back on track.
"The taskforce work is certainly responsible for six months of the delay, but I would put the view that were it not for that investment this project probably couldn't have happened at all," he said."
With demolition work underway, some building contracts are set to go out for tender within weeks.
The Minister has inspected demolition works in the former executive offices.
The offices are being converted into clinical rooms for oncology services, which are being relocated during construction.
One of the hospital's main buildings, B-Block, will be demolished next April.

CAMPAIGNERS who tried to save an historic school from demolition have been angered to see items from the building smashed up or for sale on the internet.
Hundreds of people signed a petition against demolition of the former Tudhoe Grange School, on Durham Road, Spennymoor, which closed in 2012 when it merged with Spennymoor Comprehensive and transferred to Whitworth Park School and Sixth Form College, which was developed on the Spennymoor site.
They had hoped the 1912 red brick building, which found small screen fame as a set and production base for BBC police drama George Gently, could be retained and redeveloped.
But Spennymoor Learning Community Trust and Durham County Council said the site needed to be cleared so it can be sold to generate cash for local education.
Last week heartbroken campaigners, including many former pupils, saw the landmark building razed to the ground.
They were then shocked to see features including the wooden front doors and a piano smashed among the rubble.
Other items such as teak worktops, oak cupboards, 1950s wall maps and George Gently props have also been spotted for sale online.
Campaigner Claire Coverdale said: People have had to accept we did our best but couldnt save the building, what rubs salt in the wound is how indiscriminate and wasteful it has been.
The utter waste is shocking, stone arches and chimney pots should surely have been salvaged, and things people care about such as sports trophies werent taken to Whitworth Park but thrown in a skip which is really upsetting.
The place has been pulled down around these beautiful, valuable items that people have dear memories of.

PEORIA - It's called your house, your hive, your den, your nest. You'll spend more time in it than any other place in your life. So why isn't there a one stop shop for all things dedicated to your dwelling? Oh wait, it just so happens there is!
Lisa Scott of the Home Builders Association says, "We have everything from lumber yards, to home builders, siding companies, roofing, windows."
When the Official Spring Home Show kicked off in the Civic Center, organizers hoped around twenty thousand people would pass through the doors.
Exclamations could be heard like "We need to redo our roof, our indoor windows on the 2nd floor."
Or
"Looking at possibly building or remodeling a house is we find one we like."
Lisa Scott explains, "Most are looking for what they're going to do for their spring home projects... Do a little dreaming about that house they want to build someday."
Scott Bosecker agrees, "This is the only place where you can get this many people at one time under one roof."
Bosecker is a home builder based out of Mapleton. He says the crowd at the Civic Center is exactly what his business needs.
"We're a small custom home builder we do 3 to 4 houses a year 30-40% of the work we get is from this show."

Laminate Counters Laminate surfaces are inexpensive, available in a range of options, and easy to maintain. The downside is that they are not heat tolerant, and edges and seams are generally visible. They also scratch and chip easily, which is not easily repaired. Solid Surface Counters With no visible seams, lots of patterns and colors available and a renewable quality that allows cuts and scratches to be blended out, solid surfaces (which are basically a plastic) have several advantages. The downsides are that theyre not heat resistant, are pricier and require professional installation. Granite Countertops, Marble Countertops and Other Natural Stones Granite, slate, soapstone, quartz, marble, limestone and gemstone all fall under this category. Long-lasting natural stone has an organic beauty and is more heat tolerant than other surfaces. It also expensive, and its porous quality requires sealing maintenance to prevent stains. Engineered Stone Countertops Engineered stone mimics natural stone, yet combines the properties of real stone with other ingredients to eradicate its porosity and maintenance requirements. This option, however, can be expensive depending on color choice. Wood and Butcher Block Countertops Great for a cutting surface, wood and butcher block options give the kitchen a warmer aesthetic than stone. Wood surfaces are susceptible to water damage if not properly sealed, and can dent and scratch easily. Metal Counters Metal surfaces, including stainless steel, copper or pewter, are heat tolerant, non-porous and sanitary. Like wood, though, they also can scratch and dent easily. Concrete Countertops Surfaces created from concrete or cement have the ability to incorporate inlaid decorative details or useful implements like trivets. However, theyre prone to hairline cracks and are extremely heavy. Composite/Recycled Counters Eco-friendly and similar to natural stone, recycled products are warmer to the touch than other options. Because theyre naturally made, they may fade over time. Lavastone Counters This unique application of volcanic lava hardened into a stone-like consistency is heat, scratch and stain resistant and nonporous. However, because its uncommon, its expensive and hard to come by. Tile Counters Tile surfaces come in an endless variety of styles and colors, are heat tolerant and durable, and can be very affordable depending on the chosen tile. Due to grout lines, theyre not very easy to clean. Glass Counters This hygienic, non-porous surface is simple to maintain, heat tolerant, stain resistant and available in many styles, colors and textures. They can be expensive, show fingerprints and water spots, and can crack easily.

When remodeling your kitchen, countertops should be on the top of your list. After all, aside from your refrigerator, your kitchen counters are used most frequently. With so many materials, colors, and styles to choose from, selecting the right counter top can be very overwhelming.
Kitchen countertops come in a variety of materials. Selecting the right material is vital to the appearance and functionality of your kitchen. You want a counter top to enhance the visual statement of your kitchen while still being durable enough to survive its everyday usage.
Plastic laminates are typically the most widely used material for kitchen countertops. This is true mainly because it is inexpensive, resistant to stains and grease, low maintenance, hides scratches, and it comes in an array of colors and textures. However, sharp objects and hot pans can damage laminate plastic countertops and the damage is hard to repair.
Solid surface countertops are similar to plastic laminate in that they both are durable but susceptible to damage from sharp objects. However, with its increased price, come more benefits such as no underlayment needed and the option of ordering it custom formed to hide seams. Solid surface veneers will give you the same durability and resistance to stains as your standard solid surface countertop, but with a decrease in price. This is due to its limited variety of patterns and colors, as well as its need for an underlayment.
Butcher block countertops, made from hardwoods such as red or white oak, offer an alternative look and appeal. Wood never goes out of style and will always give you a warm, natural look. Although scratches can easily be sanded out from wood, the over all maintenance must be kept up.
Stainless steel, on the other hand, is very easy to clean and is the perfect choice for serious cooks. Steel offers a stylish modern look to your kitchen. Although steel counter tops may be very appealing, durable and easy to maintain, they are also very expensive, heavy and difficult to install. In general, this is not a do-it-yourself install. Look for reliable kitchen contractors in your area for help with this project.
If you are looking to keep cost low, it is best to stick with a simple durable tile countertop. Glazed ceramic and porcelain tile will not stain, but keep in mind that you cannot use ceramic material as a cutting board! Porcelain is more expensive but also more durable. For the best protection, granite slabs will offer you stain and heat resistance. Also, granite will increase the value of your home.
Replacing the countertops in your home is a great investment. You'll want to make sure you are choosing the right countertops for your house and your budget. We offer Free Countertop Price Quotes from local, reliable countertops contractors.
