Michael Newman
Michael Newman won the opportunity to fly in a stunt plane with aerobatic champion Rob Holland. Holland and Window World, America's largest replacement window and exterior remodeling company, teamed up to create the Hero Flight program where military veterans can enter to win the flight. Newsome sits in the cockpit of the stunt plane on Thursday March 26, 2015 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
With each click of the ratchet tightening him into his seat, Michael Newman of Tuscaloosa grew more excited. Within minutes of the propeller whirling to life like a ceiling fan, he was off the ground, flying over Tuscaloosa at between 2,000 and 5,000 feet at about 230 miles per hour.
Newman, a U.S. Navy veteran, rode in the front passenger seat of a Window World Extra 300 on Thursday as the winner of the Rob Holland Ultimate Airshows Hero Flight Program. The aerobatics champion and air show pilot created the program about five years ago to honor U.S. military veterans.
The Hero Flight Program, in cooperation with Window World, a window replacement company, offers one U.S. veteran per air show a ride in Hollands plane to experience the thrill of air show quality maneuvers like loops, rolls and tumbles a tail over nose flip.
Holland will perform Saturday and Sunday in the Tuscaloosa Regional Air Show at the Tuscaloosa Regional Airport.
Newman said he read an article about the contest on The Tuscaloosa News website and entered the contest on Monday. When he received a call from Holland on Tuesday telling him he was the lucky winner, he said he thought, Youve got to be kidding. This is a once in a lifetime (opportunity).
Ive watched Rob at other air shows and hes like the best in the world, Newman said. To be able to do a little bit of what he does in a show is something nobody gets to experience. Them doing this for veterans, thats just incredible.
Newman said he served from 1986 to 1991 on nuclear submarines, including a stint as a technical expert on the SEAL Delivery Vehicle team one.
Holland said he is inspired by his fathers military service to offer rides to veterans like Newman.

14 schools in our region will receive money from the Condition Improvement Fund

Two city schools will be able to start their merger after receiving a 500,000 government grant.
Costessey junior and infant schools were among 14 academies in the region which will take a share of the 67m funding from the Condition Improvement Fund for 2015-16.
Other schools set to benefit are East Norfolk Sixth Form College (west block roofs), Wymondham College (transformer upgrade), Wymondham High (window replacement), Lynn Grove High (roof repairs/replacement), Sheringham High (outdoor dining facility), Hellesdon High (window and roof repairs), Flegg High (new changing room), Hobart High (flat roof replacement), St Clements High (roof repairs), Duchy of Lancaster Methwold Primary (oil tank, kitchen and hall), Marham Infants (heating service, windows), All Saints Academy (boilers and toilets) and Kessingland Primary (re-roofing glazed atrium).
Katie Lawson, head of the Costessey schools, said merging them on a single site would allow them to better share resources.
She said: It gives the opportunity for reception children to work with children from Year 6. Although at the moment we do that through our transition process, it eases it. You take away the fear of moving from one school to another. All the children can work together and be familiar with their surroundings.

In many U.S. cities, buildings emit more greenhouse gas emissions than even cars or factories. That's because powering and heating office towers and apartment buildings releases large amounts of climate-change pollutants, environmental officials say. But that may be starting to change.
Cities across the country are taking significant steps to reduce energy and water waste in commercial buildings and to install rooftop solar panels and other clean energy technologies. Leading the way is Washington, D.C., which ranked first on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys latest list of the top 25 energy-efficient metro areas.
The EPA rankings are based on the number of Energy Star-certified buildings each city added over the past year. The federal Energy Star designation goes to buildings that use 35 percent less energy and cause 35 percent fewer emissions than other buildings of a similar size and use. More than 25,000 commercial buildings have been certified since the program began in 1999. Theyve saved more than $3.4 billion on utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to the annual electricity use from nearly 2.4 million homes, the EPA wrote on its website.
The agency began ranking cities in 2009 after noticing a growing number of Energy Star buildings in cities, the EPA said. Washington is the first metro area to beat out Los Angeles for the top spot since the competition began. The agency also ranks the top midsize and small cities.
The District of Columbia is proud to be a national leader in energy efficiency, Mayor Muriel Bowser said in a statement this week. Investing in our green economy is good for our environment and good for business. We are fully committed to working with our local business leaders to lower energy costs, reduce our carbon footprint and employ residents with good-paying jobs in the rapidly expanding sector.
The district added 480 certified buildings last year, while Los Angeles added 475 buildings. L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti credited the citys Department of Water and Power with taking the lead on energy-efficiency initiatives. To get buildings certified, a typical upgrade involves reducing lighting loads, sealing leaky windows, adding new insulation and improving heating and cooling systems.
We will go into any business and not only do the assessment of your businesss energy use, but we will help implement the changes, Garcetti toldradio station KNX-AM about the process.
