Letter: Ex-hotel employee documents tree removal - March 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A tree in July 2014 is illegally removed from the Landing Resort. Photo/Isaac Walker

Publishers note: This letter with photos and video (Landing Tree cutting July 2, 2014)was sent to Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe News on March 23 in regards to illegal tree removal at the Landing Resort.

Video was shot from my cell phone, while I was the banquet manager (of the Landing Resort in South Lake Tahoe).

None of the management on site knew what was happening with this particular tree. The day before the tree cutting the lift showed up. On the afternoon of July 2, 2014, Brent Truax, regional manager and second to Jim Demetriades, showed up and said we would need to close the patio that night. Just after 5pm, private contractors showed up and removed the tree, which was in front of the restaurant patio, and Jims favorite room. This was in preparation for the Fourth, they were hoping for a better view of the fireworks!

I would love to see the trees go back in this spot.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Thank you for your concern in this matter,

    Isaac Walker

Great Barrington's Main Street renovation resumes with pear tree removal - March 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

GREAT BARRINGTON The $6.2 million renovation work along the Main Street corridor resumed on Monday, and among the first orders of business is the removal of the pear trees that line each side of Main Street.

This was a bone of contention during the planning phase of the work three years ago, and while most local merchants aren't thrilled about it, most also realize the work needs to be done.

"I hate to see them go," said Susan Pevzner, owner of Jack's Country Squire at 316 Main St.. "I remember how beautiful they looked in the spring. But they're old and bent over and their roots have pushed up parts of the sidewalk."

Pevzner in particular is keenly aware of the inconveniences caused by an uneven sidewalk. A foot injury several years ago put her on crutches for several weeks, and negotiating the uneven surface was "agonizing."

"Tell me about it," said Mark McGovern, longtime sales associate at Tune Street, another Main Street business. McGovern had an ankle injury a few years ago as well, "and my doc told me to stay away from angled surfaces. I said, 'It ain't gonna happen where I work, doc.' Not with that sidewalk."

The town has faced several complaints from residents and visitors tripping over upraised portions of the walk.

Maryland rules govern tree cutting - March 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

When Pepco wants to cut down a tree, it looks to detailed requirements mandated by state law.

In 2011, Maryland passed the Electricity Service Quality and Reliability Act, which required state regulators to impose stricter standards for reliability and enforce new mandates on utilities. Those regulations went into place in 2012.

The new regulations set standards for everything from the frequency and duration of outages and customer communication to downed wires and vegetation management the pruning and removal of trees.

Marylands Tree Expert Law which has been on the books since 1945 and a 1914 Roadside Tree Law, which regulates trees in the public right of way, also are taken into account when utilities prune trees.

Between 2010 and 2012, Pepco looked at all of the trees around its entire system, said Pepco Senior Staff Forester Dan Landry.

Now, it trims on a four-year cycle part of the new regulations, he said.

Even though the time span is longer, the change in law leads to more of the tree being removed.

A four-year cycle means the tree will be pruned so it takes four years for branches to grow back in the clearance zone, Pepco Region Vice President Jerry Pasternak said.

Pepco is in its first four-year cycle, Landry said, so there are places in the county where it just pruned trees two or three years ago and is back again.

Trees respond aggressively to pruning, Landry said. They grow much faster the first and second year after theyre pruned. Then, the growth slows down.

Business buzz: New Realize Bradenton website; Sarasota company gets work at Disney; - March 26, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The new RealizeBradenton.com website was made with "responsive design" so it works well on any device.

    Realize Bradenton overhauls website

Realize Bradenton has launched a new website, RealizeBradenton.com.

The new site emphasizes design, photography, simple navigation and easily accessible information. It was coded to look and work well on whatever device is being used to view it, from a desktop PC to a phone.

"Our new website is the culmination of more than 12 months of research, data mining, planning and execution," said Johnette Isham, executive director of Realize Bradenton.

The site was designed in-house using staff expertise in photography, writing and coding, with the support of Bryan Gordon Design, of Sarasota.

"Essentially, we've strategically connected our database, website and communication platforms, said Jeremy Piper, communication manager for Realize Bradenton, who was in charge of the website's overhaul.

"These integrated tools allow us to easily edit our website, maintain relationships with board members, donors, volunteers, visitors, residents, and more -- all from one system."
