Don't let a small space discourage you when looking for your next apartment. Additional space means nothing if it provides little function, which is why you'll be amazed at what creative potential can be found in smaller living spaces. Even if your decorating options seem limited by landlord laws and rental agreements, here are some ideas that might make you rethink a spaces potential.

1. Consider Open Storage If "limited" is a nice way of describing your kitchen storage space, opt for metal shelving units to give off a cool, industrial finish to your apartment. 2. Mirror, Mirror on the Wall Mirrors are a basic trick for any interior decorator to add more size and dimension to a room. Mirrors reflect light and make spaces feel bigger. Hang large mirrors across from windows in your apartment's living room, dining room and other rooms so it's in an ideal position to reflect light back into the room.

3. Mount your TV to the Wall Maximize your space by hanging your TV from the wall. This allows you to use your console for more entertaining or storage space, in the area where your TV would have normally sat. This move also makes the TV area look less bulky.

4. Chic Dining If you're working with a really cramped dining nook, clear furniture and glass tables can make the space look less crowded. To visually expand the space even more, hang up some artwork and add wall-mount scones for lighting. Minimizing the amount of furniture and lighting on the ground space will maximize the room's space.

5. Divide and Conquer While this may seem counterintuitive, dividing up floor space into different zones may actually make your apartment seem larger. Use your sofa or consoles to act as "dividers" within a room and create different living spaces within one general room.

The city Urban Design Commission approved changes to a rented property on Monroe Street and considered additions to a new engineering operations building and a multi-family apartment development in a Wednesday meeting.

The Madison Theatre Guild requested the committee review an application to make changes to a sign size on rented city property at 2410 Monroe St., originally denied because a 16.5-square-foot sign exceeded the citys maximum of six square feet on a non-residential building in a residential zone.

Vice President Betty Diamond explained in a letter six square feet would not be adequate for the purposes of the Guild.

She said that although the property is located in a residential area, it is very close to commercial areas. There is a functioning gas station next to the rented property, which includes an old firehouse. A commercial area is only a few blocks away.

We believe the current design satisfies the criteria for the [Comprehensive Design Review] process, Diamond said.

The motion for the new sign passed unanimously, and was not discussed further in depth.

Kay Schindel of the city engineering department then presented a proposal for a new addition to the current vehicle storage and maintenance facility at 1600 Emil St.

He said the plan would almost duplicate the area of the existing garage.

Commissioner Tom DeChant raised concerns about the facilitys proximity to a waste dump site, especially whether it would affect traffic flow. Shindel said his company has been negotiating with the city streets department to address the issue.

Several committee members also brought up the varying colors of the building. Their hope for the design was to bring some unity to the color scheme.

Lighting trends show increasing demand for and use of LED light sources. With continued LED lighting innovations, the ability to diffuse light without compromising overall light transmission has become critical, especially for indoor lighting. Architects selected for UA medical tower

Banner Health has awarded the contract for the design of the new Banner-University Medical Center Tucson hospital tower in Tucson to Shepley Bulfinch architects of Phoenix, in association with GLHN Architects & Engineers Inc. of Tucson. The 11-story tower is scheduled for completion in 2019.

Banners acquisition of University of Arizona Medical Center was finalized on Feb. 27.

Shepley Bulfinch prepared the master plan for the new Banner-UMC facility and completed the hospitals surgical services renovation and expansion in 2013. Elsewhere in Tucson, the firm worked on the development of the Main Gate Overlay District near the UA campus.

Tucson-based GLHN has worked on local projects including the Streetcar Maintenance and Storage Facility and Pima County Courts Complex.

Tucson-based Raytheon Missile Systems has been awarded an Air Force contract worth more than a half-billion dollars to produce advanced air-combat missiles for the U.S. and its allies, according to a Pentagon contract notice.

Under a three-year, $529 million contract, Raytheon will produce an undisclosed number of Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) by early 2018 for the Air Force, the Navy and for foreign military sales. Fiscal 2015 Air Force and Navy production funds totaling $295 million were obligated at the time of award, the Defense Department said.

The AMRAAM is used by 36 allied nations. In December, the Air Force awarded Raytheon a $492 million contract to supply an undisclosed number of AMRAAMs and related equipment in a deal involving sales to South Korea, Oman, Singapore and Thailand.
