SHEBOYGAN - St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan will begin remodeling its main and emergency entrances and itslobby this month.

"We're always looking for ways to enhance the care and experience that we provide to our patients and visitors," said Justin Selle, president and CEO of Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS) St. Nicholas Hospital.

Selle said the hospital has spent a lot of money in recent years improving the inside of the building, but now it's time to enhance the exterior to showcase the same modernization that can be found inside.

New awnings will be added to both the main and emergency entrances along Superior Avenue. Selle said stone will also be added to the outside to give a more modern look.

Although the emergency entrance may be closed at times, the emergency department will remain open throughout the renovation, whichis scheduled to wrap up in the fall. If the emergency entrance is closed, patients will still be able to enter through the main entrance right next to it,and vice versa.

The renovated lobby will have more natural light andincreased seating in a more relaxed and comfortable space, Selle said. A cafe will be added near the existing gift shop.

Earlier this year, the HSHS St. Nicholas HospitalFoundation said itwanted to be part of the project and donated $1 million, Selle said. That foundation is the philanthropicarm of the hospital and helps raise money for new technology and other projects.

Last fall, St. Nicholas remodeled the radiation oncology suite, Selle said, and back in 2017, it renovated the intensive care unit, intermediate care unit and surgical suites.

For weeks, a 56-year-old Cudahy woman kept finding mysterious bags on her front porch in the 3600 block of East Hammond Avenue.

After the third instance Feb. 18, she decided to call the police.

The woman didnt go through the backpack but gave it to police and officers found a ripped piece of paper inside with a name, address, key and a message, according to a police report.

Please call mee (sic)! Andrew Steidl key inclosed (sic) #9 room, the notesaid.

The woman told police she didn't know Steidl who, according to police, has a history of stalking or following women.

According to the report:

The woman said an upstairs neighbor had seen a man walking the property. The man told the neighbor he was an old tenant and was looking for the woman. After the neighbor told the man the woman wasnt home, he dropped a bag on the property and left.

Police called the number and the man who answered identified himself as Steidl. He admitted the backpack was his and agreed to meet at his apartment.

Steidl told police he left the bag on the porch because he liked the girl that lived there and he wanted her to call him so they could meet.

Police returned the backpack and its contents to Steidl andissued him a citation for littering on private property. Police told Steidl his actions were not acceptable, and he was not welcome on the womans property.

Not long ago, asphalt shingles, slate, clay or concrete tiles were about the only roofing options. Today, advanced roofing materials provide an unprecedented range of alternatives, as well as new looks for existing materials.

Here is a list of 9 different types of roofing to consider for your next re-roofing job:

Advanced solar collectors integrate seamlessly into existing shingles, generating up to 1 kilowatt of energy per 100 square feet. Theyre particularly good for sunny roofs in homeowners associations that forbid typical solar panels. While they may help offset energy costs with solar power, they also cost more than traditional solar options.

Asphalt shingles are the most common roofing materials in America because theyre effective in all environmental conditions. Quality varies widely, so ask whether they pass the ASTM D3161, Class F (110 mph) or ASTM D7158, Class H (150 mph) wind tests and the AC438 durability test. Upfront costs are low, but you should expect to replace the shingles after about 20 years. If you live in a hail prone area, consider impact resistant shingles which have a UL 2218 Class 4 rating. Impact resistant shingles may qualify for a discount on your homeowners premium.

Metal roofing comes in vertical panels or shingles resembling slate, tile and shake and lasts about 60 years. Metal excels at sloughing off heavy snow and rain, wont burn and resists high winds. It is lightweight and can be installed over existing roofs. However, metal can be noisy during rainstorms, and may dent from hail. Average costs range between $5 and $12 per square foot, depending on type and style of metal which is more than asphalt but less than concrete tiles. Corrosion also varies by material.

Interlocking panels mimic slate, clay or shingles and resist damage caused by heavy rains (up to 8.8 inches per hour), winds of 120 miles per hour, uplifting, hail and freeze-thaw cycles. Consequently, theyre an economical, effective choice for wet, windy regions or areas prone to wildfires. Some stone-coated steel roofs are warranted for the lifetime of the house.

Slate roofing lasts more than 100 years. It wont burn, is waterproof and resists mold and fungus. Slate is effective in wet climates but is expensive, heavy and may be easily broken when stepped on. Keep this in mind if you live in an area that experiences hail.

Rubber slate looks natural and can be cut with a knife to fit intricate roofs like those found on Victorian homes. Rubber slate roofs can last 100 years but can be damaged by satellite dishes and walking so may also be susceptible to damage by hail, similar to slate. Roofing professionals that are trained to install rubber slate may be hard to find.

Clay and concrete roof tiles can withstand damage from tornadoes, hurricanes or winds up to 125 miles per hour and even earthquakes, according to "A Summary of Experimental Studies on Seismic Performance of Concrete and Clay Roofing Tiles" by the University of Southern California for the Tile Roofing Institute. They are good in warm, dry climates. They may require extra support to bear their weight, and they are likely to break when walked on.

Green roofs are covered with plants and can improve air quality, reduce water runoff and insulate homes to reduce urban heat islands. However, they need extra structural support, a vapor barrier, thermal insulation, waterproofing, drainage, water filtration, soil, compost and plants. Their estimated lifespan is 40 years.

This heavy roofing consists of layers of asphalt, tar or adhesive topped with an aggregate and is only for flat roofs. Tar and gravel roofs, also for flat roofs, are best for roof-top decks with heavy foot traffic. These roofs may become sticky in summer, and it is harder to shovel snow off of these roofs when compared to smooth surfaces. They can last 20 to 25 years.

Roofing underlayment is a water-resistant or waterproof barrier material that is installed directly onto your roof deck. It is applied under all other roofing materials as an added layer of protection from severe weather.

There are three main types of roofing underlayment:

Asphalt-saturated felt and synthetic underlayment are water-resistant. Rubberized asphalt underlayment is waterproof.

Asphalt-saturated felt was the go-to roofing underlayment until about 15 years ago. Thats when synthetic products started gaining in popularity.

Synthetic underlayment (technically non-bitumen synthetic underlayment) is the preferred underlayment of most roofing professionals today.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Bobbie Harris, 79, lost her rental home, her job and her church when a deadly tornado struck her community in North Nashville. But all she could think about was her blessings.

Through it all, God is good, Harris said.

Harris joined other members of Mount Bethel Missionary Baptist Church on Sunday to worship just outside the ruins of the church, which has been in the community for 135 years. The roofs of their two church buildings are gone, ripped away by strong winds early Tuesday.

The church pitched a tent in the parking lot and the congregants gathered to sing, pray and hold hands in what the church called worship in the rubble. Even contractors who were busily trying to replace downed power lines paused and took off their hard hats as Pastor Jacques Boyd led the congregation in prayer on the sunny, windy morning.

The National Weather Service has said at least six tornadoes hit middle Tennessee during last week's storms that killed 24 people and caused massive damage in parts of Middle Tennessee.

Harris lived only blocks away from the church, where she also worked as a cook. When the tornado hit her home, the powerful winds grabbed her air conditioning unit and flung it into a fence across the street. Her granddaughters car was destroyed.

God is good. He was the conductor on that train and he went around me, Harris said. He saved me.

Boyd told his congregation that the storm was a challenge from God and had brought everyone closer together in the recovery efforts. Behind him, bits of insulation blew around in the breeze and the wooden beams that once held up the roof of the chapel were exposed. Many of the neighboring homes were still without power Sunday and blue tarps covered roofs nearby. But under the white tent, there were smiles on people's faces as they greeted each other, danced to the music and sung hymns.

Nashville is now primed to show the world what were made of, said Boyd, in blue suit, as people responded Amen.

The church, with a congregation of about 300 people, held before- and after-school care for children, had a gymnasium where kids from the neighborhood could go, put on summer camps for children and provided computer literacy classes for its older congregants.

We must trust in the savior who does not deliver us from storms, but through storms, he told the clapping congregation.

But Boyd said the church was more than the red brick building behind him. Now that the brick and mortar is gone, do you still love this community? he asked as his choir raised their hands and voices in response.

Boyd said the church will continue to hold its services inside the tent. In the meantime, they are hoping other institutions will help the church continue to provide their community services.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee and his wife, Maria, sat in the front row of the folding chairs, shook hands with the church members and bowed their heads in prayer.

There was a lot of hope here, Lee said. God uses people like this in this environment to bring hope to this community, and it was great to see.

Boyd said that as soon as he saw the demolished buildings, he prayed for guidance.

I asked God, What do I say in moments like this? Boyd said. And God spoke clearly, as I am speaking to you now. You have to help while hurting.

Skywatchers are in for a treat next week when the full worm supermoon rises in the sky.

Marchs full Moon, called the full Worm Moon, reaches peak fullness at 1:48 p.m. EDT on Monday, March 9, explains the Old Farmers Almanac. Look for the spectacularly bright Moon as it rises above the horizon that evening!

The celestial event will be the first of three supermoons in 2020, according to the Old Farmers Almanac. EarthSky notes that the full worm moon will be the second-closest of the years supermoons.

Supermoons happen when the moons elliptical orbit brings it to the closest point to Earth while the moon is full. The phrase was coined in 1979, according to NASA.

The Moon will appear full for about 3 days centered on this time, from early Sunday morning into early Wednesday morning, adds NASA, on its website.

The March full moon, which is also known as the crow moon, crust moon, sap moon and sugar moon, played an important role in Native American culture.

The more northern tribes of the northeastern United States knew this as the Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter, explains NASA, on its website. Other northern names were the Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing by night, or the Sap (or Sugar) Moon as this is the time for tapping maple trees.

Southern tribes, however, dubbed the celestial event the "worm moon," as a result of the casts left by earthworms on the thawing ground.

Some experts described the spectacular February full moon, or snow moon, as a supermoon, although others feel that it does not qualify as that category of celestial event.

The snow moon was one of the largest full moons of 2020.
