Tulsa, OK (PRWEB) November 25, 2014
KSQ Architects has designed a new addition to Tulsa Public Schools Edison Preparatory School that integrates a top-rated FEMA storm shelter within a high-design building that will function as the schools Collegiate Center. The project is scheduled to break ground tomorrow.
Time: 9:30 a.m. Date:Tuesday, November 24th Place:Edison Preparatory School, 2906 E. 41st Street, Tulsa, OK
The Collegiate Center will be an 18,500-sq. ft. addition adding two new multipurpose lecture and testing halls, two new concurrent enrollment classrooms, academic counseling offices, a conference room, computer research center and an academic study hall and lounge. The new facility will have two new FEMA-361, ICC-500-rated safe rooms. The safe rooms are designed and constructed to provide near-absolute life safety protection during tornado and hurricane events.
As we move forward in building new construction, its exciting when we can incorporate cutting-edge design in a way that provides additional safety for our students, said Bob LaBass, Executive Director, Bond Projects and Energy Management for Tulsa Public Schools. Once completed, this new structure at Edison will meet the most stringent FEMA guidelines.
As a secure school, access and circulation were key factors in the design. Placing a new building at the single secure entrance posed a potential for confusion, so a circulation path will be made from the parking area through the building. A visual path to the entry was achieved by raising the front faade to the second level in the story-high cantilever structure.
We are so proud of this project, said KSQ principal David W. Short, AIA. What you cant see from casual observation is that the infrastructure beneath the buildings exterior is as impressive as what meets the eye. To have this type of progressive design and a top-rated storm shelter in one project is an accomplishment for our entire team.
Wallace Engineering provided structural engineering on the project, and Crossland Construction is the general contractor. The addition is scheduled for completion in summer 2015.

The number of licensed architects in the United States has risen to 107,581, a 1.6 percent jump from 2013, and a 3.1 percent rise from 2011, according to the 2014 Survey of Architectural Registration Boardsconducted by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB).
The NCARB annual survey includes the number of architects and reciprocal registrations from July 2013 to June 2014 in 54 U.S. jurisdictions, including the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. California currently has the highest total number of architects at 16,618 and registrations at 20,595, with New York close behind with 9,872 architects and 16,809 registrations.
Our survey documents an architecture profession that is thriving, says Michael J. Armstrong, CEO of NCARB in a release. NCARB will continue to spearhead changes in architectural licensing standards to support a growing architecture industry.
Although there is an increase in the number of licensed architects, the national total of architects that hold reciprocal licenses is 119,200, down 2 percent from 2013.

ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) - A massive $29 million remodeling of Southern Oregon Universitys McNeal Pavilion will dramatically change the schools athletic complex. Some of that change will come from subtraction, as the architects current model eliminates the universitys pool.
The pool is not going to make it. Its not in the current program, said Drew Gilliland, SOUs director of facilities, planning, management and sustainability.
A concrete masonry and steel structure, McNeal was completed in its original form in 1957 before remodels and additions in 1966 and 1991 led to the current 120,000-square-foot facility. Now 57 years old, the mixed-use building is due to be replaced, minus the pool, with work scheduled to start next summer.
The pool was deemed not worth rebuilding or replacing, said Gilliland, because it was in bad shape and in a poor location with regard to a new Student Recreation Center that is part of the project. He also noted that SOU has no swim team and the pool is mostly used by high schools.
The decision to leave a pool out of the plans did not sit well with Cynthia Moscaritolo of the Rogue Valley Masters, a community-based swim team based in Ashland.
Moscaritolo said most of the student body does not know of the schools plans to scrap the pool. She believes it will be a big loss for the community.
It seems like the powers that be at SOU are trying hard to get rid of the pool because they dont want the hassle of maintaining it anymore, she said.
But Ryan Brown, SOUs head of community and media relations, said the decision came at least in part from direction provided by university students.
A large portion of the funding for that project is coming from student fees, and the student government through a survey asked about the pool, Brown said in an email. It doesnt get used enough, and the result of that survey was not to include the pool in the funding for the new project. A majority of the students did not favor funding the pool.
An assessment of McNeal conducted in 2008 recommended major repairs and maintenance to the entire McNeal Pavilion building, noting that the greatest concerns were fire and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) deficiencies. Another investigation in 2013 by ZCS Engineering concluded that there was corrosion in the steel columns and reinforcement embedded in the concrete walls. A second opinion confirmed the original assessment.

Changes are gradually coming to the ways that architects can get licensed, reflecting the evolution of a profession that has helped to shape the environment around us.
I think this is unprecedented, said Michael J. Armstrong, CEO of the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards which is generating the changes.
The single most significant change would be a new path labeled licensure upon graduation, which would be a structured, streamlined approach to becoming an architect. Another change thats already underway is a redesign of the Intern Development Program, which is a major step in the journey to become an architect.
One starting point for the overhaul of the licensing requirements is a single statistic: The average age at which a person gets licensed or registered as an architect is 34. In addition, only about half of the graduates from architecture schools go on to be licensed, Armstrong said.
For a 17- or 18-year-old college prospect looking at careers in todays economy, spending the next 16 years to become a licensed architect can seem pretty old school compared to what might be achieved over the same period of time in information technology, Armstrong said.

We hear from people who have a lot of career options when they go to school, he said. There are choices out there that didnt exist before.
David Dekker, principal of Studio Southwest Architects in Albuquerque, was licensed at age 26, or about as fast as it could be achieved in the early 1980s. He credits his comparatively fast track to licensure largely to his upbringing.
My dad was an architect. From the time I was 10 years old, I was running blueprints in the office. Later I worked summers in construction and did drafting for my dad, said the Texas Tech College of Architecture graduate. That kind of background allowed me to take the exam and pass it.
