Given in recognition of a lifetime's work, the Royal Gold Medal is approved personally by the Queen and is given to a person or group of people who have had a significant influence "either directly or indirectly on the advancement of architecture".
Past recipients have been such luminaries as Sir Norman Foster, who designed the Gherkin in London and Sir George Gilbert Scott, famous for the Midland Grand Hotel at St Pancras Station and the Albert Memorial in London.
The Lyric Theatre is one of a record five buildings by the Dublin-based architects O'Donnell + Tuomey to have been shortlisted for the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) Stirling Prize.
The firm was shortlisted in 1999 for Ranelagh Multi-Denominational School in Dublin, 2005 for the Lewis Glucksman Gallery in Cork, 2011 for An Gaelras Irish Language Arts and Cultural Centre in Londonderry and in 2014 for the London School of Economics Saw Swee Hock Students' Centre.
It is 40 years since the Royal Gold Medal has been awarded to an Irish practice, with Sheila and John being among the youngest recipients of the Medal. The Lyric has won a string of architectural prizes since it was rebuilt in 2011, including Best Building at the Royal Society of Ulster Architects'.
The Lyric Theatre's chairman, Mark Carruthers, said: "Everyone at the Lyric is thrilled to see O'Donnell + Tuomey receiving the global recognition their work deserves. It comes as no surprise to any of us that Sheila and John should attract the highest accolade in world architecture - we know better than anyone that they design buildings which are both brilliant and beautiful.
"We always knew that the task of designing the new Lyric would be a stiff challenge, given the complexity of the site and the intricate, technical demands of a theatre building, but Sheila and John's ideas exceeded our wildest expectations.
"Their Lyric Theatre is a building for everyone in Belfast and beyond and we're delighted that audiences and architectural experts alike agree that it was designed by two people who are in a class of their own. As the citation for this latest award so rightly says of O'Donnell + Tuomey, 'Everything they do speaks to the best of us'."

The most prestigious award in world architecture, the RIBA Gold Medal, has been awarded to husband and wife team, ODonnell Tuomey.
Sheila ODonnell and John Tuomey, who set up in practice in Dublin in 1988 and were to the fore in the regeneration of the original Temple Bar area of Dublin, have been the recipients of a number of national and international awards.
The firms buildings have been shortlisted for the Stirling Prize a record five times, including its most recent work, the Saw Swee Hock Student Centre at the London School of Economics, shortlisted for the 2014 RIBA prize.
Corks Glucksman Gallery, which has also garnered a number of awards from the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, and from RIBA as well as a UK Civic Trust award, also made the Stirling Prize shortlist for 2005.
ODonnell + Tuomey follow architect Michael Scott (Scott Tallon Walker), who won his Gold Medal in 1975 and engineer Peter Rices award in 1992.
They will also be the first husband-and-wife team to achieve the award since Charles and Ray Eames in 1979 and Michael and Patricia Hopkins in 1994, and are among the youngest recipients of the award.
At the announcement, RIBA President Stephen Hodder said: ODonnell + Tuomeys work is always inventive, striking, yet so well considered, particular to its place and brief, beautifully crafted and ever-developing. Sheila and John are at the vanguard of contemporary Irish architecture and I am delighted they are to receive this lifetime honour.
The firm has exhibited three times at the Venice Biennale and the couple are alumni of the School of Architecture at University College Dublin, where they also teach.
In a statement, they described their surprise at the news: Were delighted to have been chosen for this unexpected honour. Were humbled to find ourselves in such a company of heroes architects whose work we have studied and from whose example we continue to learn.
We believe in the social value and the poetic purpose of architecture and the gold medal encourages us to prevail in this most privileged and complicated career.

Student housing at Baylor University newly refurbished by KSQ Architects demonstrates not all campus upgrades need a big budget to be successful.
Baylor plans to refurbish or renovate ten residence halls over the next eight years. South Russell Hall, completed in August at a cost of $8.5 million, is the first of those halls to undergo a transformation. The 222-bed residence hall features double student rooms and community baths. Beginning in the fall of 2015, it will house the Education Living-Learning Center (a community for students hoping to teach in the broadest sense of the word one day).
Not only did the university want to upgrade the living spaces in South Russell, Baylor also wanted to incorporate a living-learning program into the building, which meant adding study lounges, a faculty-in-residence apartment, a classroom, and seminar rooms.
Baylor University appreciates our partnership with KSQ and Linbeck in this refurbishment, said Jeff Doyle, Baylor Universitys Dean for Student Learning and Engagement. We have kept our focus creating a transformational student experience, rooted in opportunities for positive peer leader, faculty, and staff influence. With KSQs help, we have taken an almost 50-year old building and re-created it as a home for learning, friendship, and growth that will serve our students for another 50 years.
Creative thinking by KSQ Architects included the fish bowl glass-encased study rooms in the corridors that allows students to see and be seen by their peers while studying. Natural light was brought into the corridors to keep hallways from feeling dark, while community kitchens and a recreation and game room area in the basement enhances South Russells sense of community. A central, open staircase connects the three levels to the basement, which now feels much more accessible than before.
Our partnership with Baylor on South Russell Hall is something our team is really proud of, said Sean Studzinski, KSQ Principal in the firms Texas office. Our creative use of both their existing space and their budget is testimony to KSQs innovation in student housing.
All of the Baylor renovations will include spacious faculty-in-residence apartments that, at approximately 2400 square feet, provide faculty and their families a space that truly feels like home.
Other Project Features Include:

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-four Malaysian architects, artists and multimedia designers are showcasing their best ideas and works at the International Architecture Exhibition-La Biennale in Venice from June 7 until Nov 23, 2014.
Coordinated by the Malaysian Institute of Architects (PAM), the works and ideas are displayed at the pavilion of Malaysia themed Sufficiency, said Malaysia Curatorial Team Leader Dr Tan Loke Mun.
We have a good number of young participants this year and it is wonderful to see new talents wanting to make their mark on the world stage. This is Malaysias third participation at Venice La Biennale and the best so far, he told Bernama in an interview, recently.
He described the theme of the Malaysia pavilion, Sufficiency as thought provoking which is depicted by suspended pet cages, providing a surreal image and narrating a story of sufficiency.
Tan said PAM was tasked with the setting up of a curatorial team for the iconic global architecture and art exhibition and coordinating the Malaysian participants by the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade).
The 24 participants were chosen by PAM through a series of competition. The teamwork and camaraderie between Matrade and the Malaysian architects and designers is fabulous from the planning stage right through the setting up of the pavilion and the opening ceremony, he said.
Citing Matrades support as instrumental to the success of the Malaysia pavilion, he said Matrade Chief Executive Officer Datuk Dr Wong Lai Sum and her officers, including those based in Milan, had provided the necessary support in terms of finance, liaison, installation of the pavilion, logistics, and media coverage.
Tan said as Venice La Biennale is the worlds most prestigious architecture exhibition, some participants regarded it as the culmination of a lifetime of creative work, while for others, it is a gateway to many other opportunities and the international market.
Tan, who was PAM president from 2005 to 2007, said the role played by Matrade was vital as it could leverage at the government level because putting together an exhibition on a big scale abroad was not easy.

Vietnam-based firm Vo Trong Nghia Architects recently revealed an affordable prefabricated prototype house that could potentially offer Vietnamese people on a very low income somewhere safe and durable to live. While still a work-in-progress and thus subject to change, the S House currently costs just US$4,000 to build.
Vo Trong Nghia Architects has been developing the S House since 2012, and the design has already gone through several iterations. The firm notes that because Vietnamese wages can be very low (the equivalent of under $100 per month in some cases), many people are required to live in temporary shacks that simply don't stand the test of time and are expensive to maintain and repair. Therefore, the main goals of the S House are durability, affordability, and ease of repair.
The S House comprises a pre-cast concrete frame and foundation that's bolted together with steel fixings, plus a cement roof. It also features steel doors and window frames, and easily-obtained local materials such as Nipa Palm leaf thatching and bamboo are used to finish the home. Its modular design allows the S House to be transported in manageable parts by small boats, and it is designed to be easily constructed by local builders.
The interior is basic, measuring just 30 sq m (322 sq ft), and includes one long room as standard. Large polycarbonate panels allow plenty of natural light and can also be opened for access and to encourage ventilation. A small gap between roof and walls also encourages air flow.
Though there are two finished S Houses currently installed in Long An Province, Vo Trong Nghia Architects reports that it is in the process of refining the design further and that it hopes to produce a more durable and lighter version. The eventual aim is for the S House to be mass-produced.

Milner, whose Chadds Ford firm has among its focuses classic American building design and preservation, has been retained for the second phase of the residential and office-space community, which encompasses several blocks in Dalian, a coastal city rapidly becoming a major IT and software center.
Groundbreaking is contingent on property acquisition; Milner said recently that he was unsure when that would happen.
After the initial phone call from the developer in 2009, Milner said, he scrambled. His client wanted to visit first, so Milner organized two weeks' worth of bus trips to 18th-century sites around Philadelphia, such as Fairmount Park, the 1767 country manor Cliveden, and Mount Pleasant, the 1760s Georgian mansion.
Tang, a U.S.-based civil engineer with an MBA from Indiana University's Kelley School of Business in Bloomington, was the key link, acting as translator and liaison for developer and architect.
"They expressed an interest in architectural styles, in East Coast late-18th-century, mainly Georgian and Federal styles," Milner said.
"Southern Hill 1910 was the name of the neighborhood," which was established around that year, Tang said.
The developer was intrigued by the urban-design aspect of U.S. houses laid out on a city grid, as well as by Philadelphia's late-18th-century architecture.
Challenges in China? Milner and his firm have had a few. One was design by committee.
"Sometimes, there were 30 people in the room in a typical meeting," Milner said, including local engineers, construction managers, marketing personnel, and the developer's personal designer. "It was exhausting because meetings lasted all day. But ultimately, they developed confidence in us."
Master bedrooms had to face south, or potential buyers would not be interested, according to the Chinese marketers.
