Burns Opposes Non-Resident Architects On City's ARB - July 14, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    July 11, 2014

A final vote on the bill is set for July 15. Burns said nothing good can come from the change. He said non-resident architects from larger, commercial firms could create "an additional distance from servicing and understanding our predominantly residential-oriented projects."

The change allows architects with offices in Webster Groves to serve on the board even if they are not residents of the city. Non-city members would be limited to three out of the seven members of the architectural review board.

City staff members have complained that the city can't find resident architects to fill positions on the board.

"I understand staff believes this might be a product of the board being overworked," he said. "Without question, the meetings often times go on way too long, so long that they are a time and cost burden upon our residents."

Burns suggested videotaping ARB meetings, which "might go a long way to keep the non-pertinent meanderings to a minimum and speed up the meeting process."

Pittsburghs look wont be the same after architect Carloughs passing - July 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Architects are considered young at 40.

With five to eight years of schooling plus apprenticeship at one or more established firms, architects are most often in their 30s before they begin to practice alone.

They are, then, in their 40s by the time they establish a name and an independent reputation.

It was that way for the outstanding Pittsburgh architect Gary Carlough, who died suddenly two weeks ago at the age of 62 at a point in his career where he was looking forward to another 10 or 15 years of creative work.

Carlough was the founder of EDGE Studio, which produced the most exciting architecture in the city in recent years.

He started EDGE in 1995 at the age of 43, and the studio has won scores of awards for its inventively modern architecture since. EDGE, for example, wins something almost every year in the local American Institute of Architecture awards, judged by panels of architects from other cities. Just three years ago, EDGE took three of the nine top awards.

In a city where many architects today put up tame buildings in a devolved postmodern style, EDGE's buildings have always been conspicuous for their originality.

Carlough, in person, was affable and enthusiastic with an earnestness leavened with good humor. Bespectacled and modest, he had no need for personal flamboyance.

His buildings, however, always stand out.

In association with Pfaffmann + Associates, EDGE did the new T-Station at Gateway Center, that long and low faceted glass canopy that is the only recent piece of world-class architecture in the city. Two blocks up Liberty Avenue, he did what is called the Lantern Building, the small structure across from Heinz Hall Park that has a translucent skin that glows in soft colors at night.

AUSTIN Architects leading the design of a new visitor center in Austin welcomed the public and their comments Thursday in an open meeting at the Austin Public Library.

The proposed visitor center is part of the bigger Vision 20/20 project in Austin. Led by RSP Architects, it's still in the early phases, with neither the site nor the design squared away yet.

Architects unveil latest design for new Gulfport High School - July 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Construction on the new Gulfport High School could start early next year. This week, architects unveiled the latest design for the campus, and district leaders laid out the demolition and construction timeline. The new Gulfport High will have features not found in any other school in Mississippi.

"Wow! This is going to be a neat complex," said Gulfport Schools Superintendent Glen East.

On Friday, East proudly showed us the updated plans for the new Gulfport High School. One drawing showed what the campus looks like now, and the last one showed what it will look like in two years.

"The first vibrations of the wrecking ball will probably be in January or February, we hope, when we begin to take down those buildings on the north side of the campus," said East.

The classrooms in the Vocational Complex, the backside of the old gym, and the Math building will be torn down first. The vocational students will move into classrooms near the cafeteria, while the math students will use every available classroom in the academic building.

"So it'll be a little chaotic at first, but it'll work," said East.

Once those buildings are demolished, construction will start on the three Academic Institutes to prepare students for future careers. They are designed to look like a downtown business district. For instance, instead of a long hallway, you willsee a winding walkway and plenty of windows and open space.

"So imagine yourself walking through a small town and passing a jewelry store, a book store, a hardware store. In these buildings, you'll walk through the same street. But you may see what the Allied Health students are doing or their wares are on display in the windows," said East.

"It's definitely unique from what we've seen in the past and we know of nothing like it in the country," he added.
