Emulation Software optimizes storage infrastructure. - August 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

August 28, 2014 - Class of Storage emulator runs in RAM and allows storage and datacenter engineers and architects to model applications against different classes of target storage in virtualized manner. Built with such virtual building blocks as SSDs, HDDs, and WAN delays, emulated arrays can simulate performance characteristics of real arrays, hybrid arrays, or cloud storage. Functionality, regarding changes to storage infrastructure, allows What-if decisions to be simulated without requiring real devices. SANBlaze Technology, Inc One Monarch Drive, Suite 204 Littleton, MA, 01460 USA Press release date: August 25, 2014

LITTLETON, Mass. -- SANBlaze Technology, Inc., a pioneer in storage emulation solutions, today announced a Class of Storage emulation solution, which will be demonstrated at VMworld(). (Booth 502)

With over 10 years of experience delivering storage emulation solutions to nearly every storage vendor worldwide, SANBlaze developed an application that allows storage and datacenter engineers and architects to model applications against different classes of target storage in an easy to use, virtualized manner.

Emulated arrays are built with virtual building blocks such as SSD's, HDD's and WAN delays to simulate the performance characteristics of real arrays, hybrid arrays or cloud storage. For example, loading different array profiles with a single mouse click or command can change the target storage environment from an all hard drive array to a flash only array, including related performance attributes. An application can run with the first storage case, and then rerun against the next, providing valuable application modeling insight and informed storage purchasing and deployment decisions.

While many tools in the market can model application loads while running on existing infrastructure, the SANBlaze Class of Storage emulator uniquely provides for emulated changes to the storage infrastructure, allowing for "What if" type architecture decisions to be simulated without the cost and complexity of real devices. Additionally, since the emulator runs in RAM, a near zero latency (NZL) mode removes storage latency from the equation when attempting to determine application and infrastructure bottlenecks, helping to flush out potential issues.

"Our base emulation product has hundreds of storage parameters that can be programmed to provide thousands of different storage environments," said Steve Munroe, President of SANBlaze. "Delivering an application that extracts this technology into common, storage array building blocks is a natural product extension for SANBlaze. It provides enterprise datacenter engineers and storage system architects all the benefits of using emulation for pre-deployment, application modeling and performance test cases."

SANBlaze VirtuaLUN(TM) target emulation systems are available in a number of physical appliance configurations or available as software to run standalone or as a virtual appliance.

Architects prepare for climate change - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

There's little question many architects and builders are convinced of the threat of climate change and urge clients to plan for a future of weather extremes.

Those who design and construct buildings are required to look decades into the future and are expected to provide owners with the best advice on how and where they should proceed with their projects. Those considerations include everything from what kind of materials to use to best withstand more frequent downpours to whether to build in an area that might become a flood plain in a future with rising sea levels.

But architects and builders who are among the believers the world is inexorably warming due to human activity can face sceptical clients who not only question the science but the added costs that adopting their plans can bring.

That scepticism means it's no easy task for young professionals like Ariane Laxo, a certified interior designer and active member of the US Green Building Council, to win over clients who may be resistant to the notion of constructing a more expensive building with a warmer and riskier long-term weather future in mind.

Laxo, past chairwoman of the USGBC's Emerging Professionals National Committee and its representative to the USGBC national committee, says she returned from a training session in South Africa with former Vice President Al Gore's Climate Reality Project with a message: Builders need to be advocates for "resilient" buildings, for their own professional sake and that of the world.

Laxo says science shows continued rising global temperatures, rising sea levels and more frequent extreme weather events.

"If we continue along this path, we will probably share the fate of the people of Easter Island (whose isolated inhabitants committed 'ecocide' by destroying their island's tree cover)," she said.

"What I'm proposing, and what the Climate Reality Project is proposing, (is) that we need to be both optimists and realists. We need to be realists because climate change is happening right now. We're seeing these intense weather events, and we need to prepare clients for it.

"But we do have the solutions at hand. They're available, and we just need to use them," she added, suggesting that architects and designers honestly confront the climate scepticism of some clients, especially since those "solutions" directly address the source a lot of carbon emissions - commercial buildings.

Laxo asserts that building professionals have a moral and ethical - and in the future, maybe even legal - responsibility to prepare clients for the effects of climate change, including intense storms, future water shortages, rising sea levels, more frequent wildfires and power interruptions.

Architects council inducts 44 - August 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Regional News of Wednesday, 27 August 2014

    Source: Daily Guide

Forty-four new architects have been incorporated into the Standing Register of the Architects Registration Council (ARC) of Ghana after undertaking the Councils Professional Practice Examination (PPE) in 2013.

At the 14th Induction ceremony held last Friday at the Ghana-India Kofi Annan ICT Centre in Accra, the Council described the event as an annual one meant to ensure the highest standards in architectural practice.

The induction ceremony bridges the academic and professional life of every architect. It climaxes six years of academic qualification at the university, a minimum of two years coaching and apprenticeship under a qualified senior architect, then six weeks of intensive seminars and tutorials and the passing of a two-day PPE by the Council to gain state licensing.

This years ceremony, attended by key stakeholders of the built environment industry, saw Barbara Simons adjudged the Overall Best Candidate for the 2013 PPE.

In her welcome address, Registrar of the ARC, Arc. Stella N.D. Arthiabah, noted the importance of the event on ARCs calendar, stressing that it showcased the high caliber of architectural practitioners in the country, who were ready to lead the creation of healthy, safe and secure built environment; a total number of 883 registered architects and 211 registered firms to date.

Mrs. Arthiabah urged the architects to desist from relying solely on professional skills but adapt to evolving management and entrepreneurial skills.

One needs interpersonal skills, strategic management, business and leadership savvy. Todays client seeks an all-round professional who can deliver competently, give value for money and also provide high-level customer service, she said.

She also stressed the need for local government, built environment professionals and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to collaborate in creating safe and healthy communities as a means of promoting public health.
