Fakler Architects set to open at new location - June 7, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Construction on Fakler Architects' new location is nearly complete at Sixth and Garfield streets.

The building will increase the size of Beatrice architect Michael Faklers office by seven times.

I am thrilled, Fakler said. I am just really pleased how it turned out and excited to be using it.

Since arriving in Beatrice in 2005, Fakler had been operating from a small office building next to his home.

Fakler said he looked to future while designing his new office building.

We tried to think long-term as far as spend a little more on the front for things we think would save us down the road because we expect to be here a long time, Fakler said.

That meant adding extra space for future employers and making a well-insulated, strong building.

The main floor of the office has space for a receptionist, Faklers workspace and a boardroom.

The basement has space for cubicles that future drafters will be able to use as Fakler Architects expands.

Because of the block being zoned light commercial, there were some setbacks while designing.

Fitting In While Standing Out, Ford Designers and Chicago Architects Discuss Parallel Trends in Aesthetic Worlds - June 7, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CHICAGO, June 6, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

Sleekly fashioned from steel and glass and carefully designed to accentuate their surroundings, today's buildings are judged on individual aesthetics as much as their ability to complement their cityscape. They have much in common, then, with many of today's automobiles, which are designed to be both beautiful and culturally relevant with visual elements that reflect their era.

Today, Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F)is joining with the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) to discuss how the two industries are moving in parallel, interpreting similar trends and learning from each other.

"Big Ideas in Small Spaces: Proportion in Design," a luncheon panel hosted by Ford and CAF, features automotive design experts and Chicago-based architects and innovators who will discuss how societal trends inspire and influence both the architectural and automotive industries.

"My favorite buildings are pristine, pure and simple, but they work because they are placed in a position that allows culture around them to shine," said J Mays, group vice president, global design, and chief creative officer, Ford Motor Company. "Cars, like architecture, have to be appropriate for their culture. A well-designed building or car will give a viewer a guide into the time in which it is built."

Chicago has long been a leader in architecture, especially the creation of skyscrapers. The city pioneered standard construction methods for steel frame structures and helped move the world past the use of traditional brick and concrete for tall buildings. The work of Louis Sullivan and Mies van der Rohe was at the forefront of these functional skyscrapers, with these innovative, Chicago-based architects upholding high standards for design aesthetics.

Trends in today's design world show that consumers in dense urban areas pay close attention to product details. With crowded areas packed with eye-catching creations, consumers differentiate their options by focusing on small features that separate one product from the pack.

"Consumers want something that looks great, but is also full of features," Mays said. "The new Ford Fiesta delivers attributes not usually associated with a car its size, everything from the eye-catching grille to the outstanding technologies; it stands as a symbol for what can be done with limited space."

The 2014 Ford Fiesta comes to market with one of the most comprehensive suites of in-car connectivity technology features available in a small car SYNC with MyFord Touch with a new 6.5-inch LCD touch screen. With MyFord Touch powered by Microsoft, Fiesta drivers can stay connected to their lives, easily getting the information and entertainment they want while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.

Architects and auto designers face similar challenges in creating something that stands out from the crowd.

Other Architects envisions new official residence for Australia's Prime Minister - June 7, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Other Architects' concept for the Australian Prime Minister's official residence, called 'A House That Floods'

The official residence of Australia's current Prime Minister (known as "The Lodge") was only ever intended to offer temporary accommodation when constructed back in 1925. To celebrate this year's Canberra centenary celebrations, the University of Canberra and the Gallery of Australian Design invited architects to produce a modern replacement for the venerable lodge. Sydney-based Other Architects duly produced its "A House That Floods" concept.

Other Architects carried out some historical research on Canberra's origins and discovered that the planned city's location on an empty dry lake was inspired by an earlier proposal by artist and architect Charles Coulter. Coulter's design placed Australia's capital city on the mostly dry but flood-prone Lake George. Needless to say, modern-day Canberra's location near the Molonglo River ultimately won out as the chosen location.

However, Other Architects was inspired enough by Coulter's vision to use it as a starting point for a residence which made use of a nearby lake to allow entire areas of the building to appear or disappear, as desired.

A House That Floods' Upper House occupies the crest of the hill which dominates the plot, and is intended to host state functions. The Lower House contains the private residence of the PM, in addition to a number of guest suites.

A defensible zone is hidden deep within the hill, and the concept even calls for lake water to be vaporized into a cloud above the house to hamper satellite surveillance, drone strikes, and paparazzi.

The most novel feature of the residence is a ceremonial area located just beneath the lake's surface. Usually filled with water, the space is brought into use by displacing the water that fills it. This action floods the nearby land and cuts off foot access from the foreshore, in addition to concealing the Lower House from view while ceremonies are held.

Williamson Sshriver Architects wins award for Mingo Central - June 6, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    The Williamson Daily News

    Julia R Goad|Daily News

Teresa Jones, Principal at MCHS, told architect Ted Shriver, I never lose that Aha moment when I come up the hill to the school.

    Julia Roberts Goad

    Staff Writer

Williamson Shriver Architects, Inc. was awarded an Honor Award for Excellence in Architectural Design for the design of Mingo Central High School.

The AIA-WV awards program recognizes projects and details that demonstrate exemplary achievement of design. Entries are not judged in competition with each other, but rather by measuring the architects performance against each projects potential. Thus, projects of ordinary program or modest budget can merit an award based on the architects skill in optimizing the design opportunity.

As Southern West Virginia is comprised generally of rugged terrain with steep mountains and deep river valleys generally subject to flooding, large tracts of land to accommodate the state standards for new high school construction are difficult to find. The Mingo Central project site, however, provided an unusual opportunity not typically available in West Virginias southern coalfields. The project was located on a mountaintop removal site.

Ted Shriver, vice-president of Williamson Shriver, recently visited Mingo Central. He said the jury that voted to award the schools design an Award for Excellence didnt realize the specific challenges faced with this particular design.

Interestingly, one juror said he would have liked to see the surroundings the school was situated in, Shriver said. They didnt judge on the land up here, just on the use of space and the curriculum of the school and the design.
