CODA & Young Architects Program: MoMA PS1 Announces Caroline O'Donnell As 2013 Winner (PHOTOS) - January 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Today MoMA PS1 declared CODA, aka Caroline O'Donnel, the winner of the Young Architecture Program. The architect stood out amongst a group of five finalists for her "Party Wall" project, a large-scale, experimental pavilion that will be built on the museum's Long Island City site this summer.

The annual Young Architects Program invites emerging architects to submit designs for a temporary, outdoor installation that can provide respite from the summer heat to MoMA PS1 visitors. CODA's "Party Wall" sustainable structure will play host to PS1's Warm Up music series this year.

"CODAs proposal was selected because of its clever identification and use of locally available resources," Pedro Gadanho, MoMA's Curator for Contemporary Architecture, stated in a press statement.

Scroll through images of CODA's design below, and tell us what you think of the project in the comments section. Is sustainable design the future of architecture?

5 Questions with Cecil Ricks, of MATRIX Architects Engineers Planners Inc. - January 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Cecil Ricks is president and director of Architecture and Design at MATRIX Architects Engineers Planners Inc., which is entering its 29th year as a design firm. He has specialized in commercial and industrial facilities, with a focus on renovation of buildings. Ricks holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from Kansas State University and is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards and Tulsa Zoo Friends.

1: The recession was difficult for many architectural and engineering firms. How did MATRIX make it through?

One of the keys to MATRIX's success over the years is the long-term relationship with our clients. We've worked with many remarkable clients who have helped us earn the reputation of being a great design firm that hires creative people and lets them be creative. The extended relationship between our staff and our clients is helping us make it through.

2: Is the demand for your firm's services rising significantly now?

We've seen a slow but steady increase in our workload. We've seen more requests for proposals from our clients over the last six months than we saw in the previous couple of years.

Architecture in this area has always been up and down. I recall a major downturn in the mid-'80s, another in the early '90s, a couple of bumps at the turn of the century and, of course, what's been happening lately.

3: What is your firm doing to make projects "greener?"

MATRIX always tried to work with more energy-efficient systems and more sustainable materials even before the "green" trend that we're seeing now. Whenever our clients wish to achieve LEED-certified projects, we have staff and consultants who can design to meet those requirements.

4: As president, what are your goals for MATRIX?

If you look up MATRIX in the dictionary, one of the definitions is "something within or from which something else originates, develops, or takes form."

Enterprise architects are put on this earth to create social change - January 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Summary: EAs have the toughest job in the world: changing peoples' minds.

The job of enterprise architects is not to smooth over existing arrangements to make technology run better for the business. Enterprise architects are put on this earth to overthrow the existing order of things.

That's the view of Nick Malik, who makes the point that EAs are in the business of revolution:

"As an enterprise architect, I am in the business of creating social change. Im actually paid to get things to change (hows THAT for a cool job). Of course, Im paid to make the changes within corporations, and the benefit goes to the corporation by making them more effective, efficient, or timely in their desire to 'make tangible' their own business strategy. However, the reasons and rationale aside, my job is all about change."

Of course, this entails one of the hardest jobs in the world -- getting people to change. To change their jobs, their workflows, their pre-concieved notions, and their thinking.

Nick says the key to getting people to make positive change boils down to one word: empathy. "Empathy is the single most powerful, most important, and most useful personality trait that an enterprise architect can have, bar none," he points out. It means more than just sitting in a meeting with an end-user and taking good notes -- it means "connecting at a deep level with the people that you are being asked to work with."

One can sense an undercurrent of Agile methodology in Nick's statement -- the idea of tech professionals sitting down and working in small groups with end-users, on a regular basis, release by release, until everyone is happy with the final outcome.

EAs need to take a leadership role in this process, he continues. And, ultimately, "only by connecting with another individual can an EA understand what is motivating that person to change, and what is keeping them from achieving it."

Architects, Strongsville City Schools present ideas for new middle school, high school renovations - January 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

STRONGSVILLE- Open, inclusive, unique and on-budget.

Thats how representatives from GPD Group and Strongsville City Schools broke down the comprehensive construction and renovation projects lying ahead after residents approved $81 million in new bonds at the first of two community meetings Jan. 10 at Strongsville High School.

Its your community, its not ours, said Rodwell King, a project manager at the Akron-based architecture and engineering firm. We dont live here, you live here, so it really needs to be your school.

About 75 residents heard an hour long presentation outlaying both the goals of the firm and the district, and the steps needed to reach them.

GPD Principal Mark Salopek said there will be a number of opportunities for residents to be involved with and up to speed on the design process of a brand new middle school to replace Center and Albion middle schools and renovations across the district, including submitting suggestions and questions directly to he and King or participating in several meetings to come.

Were starting from scratch, he said. We want to get everyone involved.

    Cost

The architects and Superintendent John Krupinski also laid out estimates for how the $81 million will be spent.

This is not just a construction project of amiddle school, said Krupinski. Its much, much more than that.

According to current estimates, $46.665 million will go toward the middle school replacing Center and Albion middle schools with a single, grades 6-8 building. About $656,000 of that will be for constructing athletic fields and a track.

Architects pitch Ringgold Middle plans - January 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Tuesday, January 15, 2013, 1:06a.m. Updated: Tuesday, January 15, 2013

After two architects pitched preliminary plans for a new Ringgold Middle School during a facilities committee meeting, school board President Mariann Bulko said the board will vote Wednesday to hire one in an effort to move forward with the project.

I was told, do not flinch, do not blink, dont look over my shoulder ... just move ahead, Bulko said after nearly two hours of presentations.

Im trying to do something that has not been done as president of the board. Weve been saying for years that we were going to build a new middle school. Im really hoping that this will unite the district.

She said the students are united.

They want this, but its the parents and adults that are fighting, Bulko said. We have seven municipalities that make up Ringgold. Thats the biggest challenge, bringing everyone together, and we have some board members that are trying to divide it even further.

Hayes Large Architects LLP and HHSDR Architects and Engineers are competing for the job.

Hayes Large opened the meeting by submitting its plan for the grades five through eight building, which will be near the high school.

Both plans would be at the same site.

The cost estimate for the Hayes Large building is $26.2 million, including construction costs, $21.3 million, and other costs, $4.9 million. The size would be 126,000 square feet.

Canterbury architects want historic Lyttelton building saved - January 17, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

A group of Canterbury architects are fighting to save the Lyttelton Tunnel's control building, which was severely damaged in the February earthquake.

It served as the gateway from the port to Canterbury for 50 years, and is one of the few historic buildings remaining in the city.

The famous landmark was designed by Peter Beaven, who was said to be inspired by Canterburys founding settlers who arrived on the first four ships.

Canterbury Institute of Architects (CIA) chair David Hill is one of those who admires its design.

It's a fantastic piece of architecture, he says.

It's one of the few contemporary buildings to have a Historic Places Trust category one listing, but suffered serious structural damage in the February quake.

CIA president David Sheppard is calling for more time.

Take another look at it before the bulldozers demolish what has definitely become a landmark building in the Christchurch scene, he says.

Locals struggle to share their architectural enthusiasm.

It's not the prettiest building in my opinion, says resident Brian Rick.
