Library work nears final chapter - March 31, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you were wondering why you couldnt check out books at the Johnson City Public Library this week, theres a good reason.

From the outside looking in, the librarys staff resembled a team of worker bees, working to finish lengthy renovation projects in their workplace hive. Shutting down the library from Monday until Sunday was a necessity, Bob Swanay, the director of the library, said as crews installed new carpet, moved furniture and refinished hardwood floors on the first and second floors.

There were a few other things that we wanted to get done, that we knew we needed to get done, that we just kind of (have) taken advantage of this whole project, Swanay said.

After a few hits and misses concerning the carpet, the goose chase was over and the new carpet from Mohawk Industries Inc. in Calhoun, Ga., arrived ready to be installed.

Swanay said the carpet problem delayed a lot of their renovation completion plans dating back to last fall.

Our expectation was to reopen the area in early October ... but we just never were able to do it because of the carpet, he said. Until we had carpet down, we couldnt do the furniture or the computers or the shelving.

Swanay said Mohawk Group, wanting to fix the mistakes, gave the library a more expensive, better quality carpet at no additional cost, and also donated additional carpet for the library to redo the meeting room, the elevators and the front walkways.

With the carpet squared away, library staff helped put together shelves and move items around to their new home.

The second floor is where the major action has happened. Thats where youll see the brand new computer center, Swanay said. Weve always had computers for the public in the library, but in the previous layout the computers were kind of scattered around the reference desk on the second floor and we had computer carrel furniture.

Saying goodbye to the carrels, the PC computers available for the public will now be in a designated location, facing a newly built wall with a SmartBoard attached.

While its customers can celebrate with 50 percent off until April 15, the three owners celebrated by looking back.

Although located in Ramsey, the business was started in 1962 by the parents of the current owners, Mike, Bob and Jeff Deiley.

Their grandfather worked as an installer and their father, Bill, started the business as a way to better himself, Mike Deiley said.

The business began in the family garage with the boys lending a hand sorting tiles and organizing the products.

We were born and raised in the business, said Mike Deiley.

In 1963, the business moved from the garage to a storefront in Anoka.

Their father handled installation, while mom Kathy handled sales and design work.

Bob Deiley, who specializes in carpet installation, said he started working with his father at the age of 14 installing carpet.

Rolling out the green carpet - March 24, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Although some March rains have begun greening up the area, curious onlookers couldnt help but ogle over a new shade of green at Beatrice High School.

The $2 million stadiums central feature, a synthetic turf field, began being rolled out Thursday morning. The process will continue over the next 10 days to two weeks, weather permitting.

Symmetry Turf Installation, a Mount Pleasant, Texas company, typically installs 30 synthetic turf fields a year.

Last week, the company installed the Baltimore Ravens indoor practice facility turf. Symmetry Turf Installations resume also includes M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, the Superdome in New Orleans, La., and the HHH Metrodome, home of the Minnesota Vikings.

On Wednesday, the two semi-trucks carrying what will become the field of the stadium unloaded the rolled turf lengths.

After steamrolling the rock base, crews stretched the turf across the field, anchoring it to the ground. By folding the turf back on itself, workers stitched the pieces together from the bottom. They also cut patterns for letters and numbers which will be installed later.

BPS Superintendent Jon Lopez said he received reports of plenty of interested onlookers driving out to the high school to see the progress made Thursday.

Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, well get to see some more progress, Lopez said.

Currently, the substantial completion date of the project is May 1.

We want to make sure all of the elements that we are promising that are going to be in the project are done and done correctly, Lopez said. The substantial completion date is May 1 but were discussing extending that. We dont want to rush anyone.

Family loses contest but wins in the end - March 22, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    GRADY, AL (WSFA) -

The Massey family from Grady, Alabamawas in the running for a $20,000 dollar home renovation from The Home Depot...as part of a contest for military families.

While they didn't win the grand prize, they still won in the end.

    "It's awesome," says Rodney Massey.

Rodney and Tammy Massey received $5,000 dollars as runners-up.

It makes sense they would only receive $5,000 dollars worth of renovations...right?

Weeks later installation on a new front deck, back deck, heating and air unit, shower, toilet, closet, counters, and carpet will soon be complete--all at the hands of company volunteers like James Cannon.

"[We] looked at the list of stuff they had and I brought some of my business partners, installers and contractors and we got everyone excited," says Cannon, an installation executive from The Home Depot.

"It was always kinda hard for me to accept help," says Rodney.

The Massey's have always wanted to renovate their house--ever sinceRodney was hurt serving in the militaryfive years ago. His injuries made it hard to get around the home.

Frank’s Floor Covering to be purchased by Witt Flooring - March 21, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    March 20, 2012

Witt Flooring is currently in the process of purchasing Franks Floor Covering, which is located at 806 North Main in Borger. PHOTO BY DON RICE

An Amarillo company is in the process of purchasing Franks Floor Covering. Witt Flooring is planning to move into the location within the next month, according to the companys general manager, Patt Calahan. Callahan said it will be about a 30-day span until Witt Flooring officially takes over the building. Witt Flooring Center will provide Borger with a wide choice of carpet, hardwood, laminate flooring, ceramic tile and natural stone products. The center will have more in-stock items as well as tools and materials for self installation, but they also offer full service installation. Scotty C. Witt became involved in the construction business with his dad when he graduated from Amarillo High School in 1948. Scotty then served two years in the Army after graduating from Abilene Christian University in 1952. Upon his return from service, Scotty assumed more duties as the family owned business became a full service residential and commercial floor covering establishment. For over 60 years, Witt Flooring Center and Abbey Carpet & Floor of Amarillo continues to serve friends, customers and contractors with quality products and installation services. We are really excited about the opportunity. Even though the economy is having a tough time, we can still expand and grow and that says a lot, said Callahan. He also states that there will be few changes to the current building, but details are still up in the air. According to Susan Combs, Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, Franks Floor Covering, LLC, 806 N. Main Street, started February 17, 2005. Franks Floor Covering, LLC also began a partnership with Mohawk as an exclusive Mohawk ColorCenter Elite Dealer. Owners of Franks Floor Covering include Frank and Amy Fernandez. Franks Floor Covering is also joined together with Tan Palace. According to Hutchinson County Appraisal District, Franks market value is worth a total of $205,080. Tan Palaces market value is $27,370.

Buddig gets a new look inside and out - March 15, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

From the moldy windows to the leaky sinks to the taped carpet, Emily Kopecs experience in Buddig Hall has led her to desire an alternative place to live next semester.

Dust is everywhere, the ceiling is jumbled, the carpeting needs to be taped down and the water fountain pressure is low, said Kopec, a criminal justice sophomore. Many of Kopecs and other students concerns will be addressed with Buddigs upcoming renovations. According to Robert Reed, assistant vice president for Student Affairs, the renovations will consist of two phases and an estimated budget of $18 million to $19 million. Reed said that these renovations will change Buddig inside and out. Jan. 9 kicked off the spring semester and the first phase of Buddig Hall renovations. During the current phase, phase one, the installation of a new HVAC system and brick remodeling, among other exterior changes will be made, according to Reed. Ann Moss, director of facilities operations, adds, The HVAC system has deteriorated, and the window systems are failing. The finishes are in need of an upgrade. The last major renovations for Buddig Hall took place in the summer of 1998. These renovations provided residents with new carpeting, wallpaper and paint. According to Moss, the most recent change to Buddig Hall was the lobby, which was updated in 2010. Cissy Petty, vice president of Student Affairs and associate provost, said that the renovations will be complete by this upcoming fall semester. We may be tidying up some loose ends when school reopens, but generally the heavy lifting will be finished, she said. Although students have complained about the disruptiveness, the project will have to move forward, Reed said. Negotiations have been made for the contractors to begin at 9 a.m. instead of 7 a.m. to accommodate students and their concerns, Reed said. If the construction team had their way, theyd like to begin at 6 a.m., even though we negotiated a 9 a.m. start, Petty said. We will do the best we can to try and meet both needs. Buddig is the largest residence hall on campus, and this is the most effective way to complete the task, especially in regard to other projects, Reed said. He said he believes that not housing students is not an option. Phase two of the renovations consists of interior renovations, such as new furniture and flooring, according to Petty. The overall intended outcome of renovations is to create a building with improved and efficient facilities for students, said Sal Liberto, vice president for Enrollment Management and associate provost. I believe the students will understand a slight inconvenience to achieve a long term goal, he said. Kopec said she has been satisfied with the construction occurring while she is in class. After living unhappily in the same room for two years, Kopec said she is glad Buddig is being renovated. The construction is needed, she said.

Marple Commissioners approve Phase II of Ravenscliff Development - March 15, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Marple Commissioners voted 6-0, Monday night, to approve Phase II of Ravenscliff, which will add 29 townhomes to the 23 under construction on Old Marple Road.

The development, built by The Benson Companies, is on the 34.8-acre parcel formerly owned by Pulte Homes. Benson is using the same plan approved for Pulte, but building in a gradual manner, and the first two portions are adhering to the original drawings.

The community will be constructed in three segments and the work thus far has involved the installation of public water and sewer lines, storm water lines, interior roads and curbing needed for the first stage and in preparation for subsequent portions.

The resolution for Phase II included the adherence to the environmental issues highlighted by Crum Creek Neighbors. In a letter to the Commissioners last year, the organization expressed appreciation for the townships support in monitoring the activities, assuring the construction followed required procedures and enforcing the code.

The final segment was originally approved as 160 condominiums in four buildings, but the plans may change to a greater emphasis on carriage houses. Similar to Phase II, the company will be required to return to the board for approval of the remaining portion of the development.

    Public Forum

The public forum included comments from John Butler (Pond House, plans for the safety center, seasonal labor, Beatty Hills sewer project, committee agendas on township website).

    Other News

The board voted by the same margin to approve:

    * a $47,511 contribution to the Marple Public Library for the second phase of the carpet replacement project. New wall-to-wall was installed last year in the entranceway, childrens area and behind the circulation desk and the donation will update the flooring in the adult section, quiet room and computer lab; Continued...

Date set for Palm Desert library closure - March 15, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Palm Desert library will close April 7 to make way for a $3.5 million makeover.

After the library closes for business that day, it will close for about six months of reroofing, repainting and recarpeting, along with installation of an automated self-checkout system with a conveyor belt.

The furniture will be replaced. The number of public computer terminals will triple from 12 to 36.

We outgrew 12 computers 15 years ago, City Librarian Jeannie Kays said.

Officials had expected the work to begin sometime last summer, but bureaucratic delays kept pushing the date back.

There also was uncertainty whether it would happen at all, since it's being paid for by redevelopment funds, which the the state will now absorb.

But the Riverside County Board of Supervisors authorized spending the money in time.

    We're very lucky, Kays said.

The library opened in 1996, and opinions are mixed as to whether the carpet, furniture and other features are worn-out enough to warrant the remodeling.

This is a much nicer library than I'm used to having, said Peter Fremstad, a winter Palm Desert resident from Pigeon Falls, Wis. It seems unnecessary, when there's so much of a need for money in other areas of the government.
