BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -
Business leaders in Taft are rolling out the red carpet and their plans on improving the downtown area with a little help from a Hollywood star.
Business owner, Karen Mitchell has seen a big difference outside her window.
Theres parking, theres friendly people, lots of good variety and lots of good prices, she said.
Mitchell has operated KC Photography and Framing in downtown Taft for the last 27 years and finds success with the citys rich history.
We have a lot of the old negatives from this area, from the 1920s and so, were working with the archives to do old photos of the area for offices and collections, she said.
The Taft Chamber of Commerce is help businesses grow. Its celebrating its installation of new leaders in true Hollywood-style with actor/director, Corbin Bernsen, reflecting on the past and sharing in sight for the future.
If we can rebuild mainstream America, the rest will follow. I dont think you can start at the top and work your way back down. I think you start back at Main Street, he said.
The Chamber of Commerce is not only recapping 2013, they are also rolling out their plans for the future.
Some of the things that we talked about doing, as far as improving our business district downtown, is kind of getting the streets cleaned up and get some of the landlords to be able to help us, so we can paint the buildings and make them where theyre more attractive, said Shannon Jones, of the Taft Chamber of Commerce.

The Cardiff Kook Run 10K & 5K, which honors a beach side statue of a surfer that locals love to hate - and decorate - was held in Encinitas Sunday morning.
ENCINITAS Running a race in costume on Super Bowl Sunday might sound kooky, and thats exactly what organizers of the Cardiff Kook Run were going for.
For the third year in a row, thousands of runners gathered for the 5K and 10K races that celebrate Cardiffs iconic Magic Carpet Ride statue near San Elijo State Beach. The featured surfer was derided for what veteran surfers recognized as an inexperienced, if not goofy, stance, and the statue was dubbed the Cardiff Kook soon after its 2007 installation.
Since then it has been regularly festooned in outlandish getups. The costumes range from the simple, like a Santa Clause outfit, to the elaborate, including a full-blown prehistoric backdrop featuring a giant pterodactyl in flight. Many participants of the 5K and some especially dedicated 10kers donned costumes in honor of the tradition.

About 2400 runners ran in the Cardiff Kook Run 10K & 5K, with many dressed in wacky costumes. There were prizes for the fastest runners in each age divisions as well as best costumes. Jamie Scott Lyle

Carpet One Floor & Home members recently experienced the countrys only 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit while attending their Winter Convention last week in Phoenix, AZ. The exhibit is comprised of historic artifacts donated by firehouses throughout New York City and was created by the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Carpet One Floor & Home along with Mohawk recently announced their new involvement with Building for Americas Bravest, a program in partnership between the Gary Sinise Foundation and Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation. The program provides Smart Homes for severely injured service members with each home custom designed to meet their needs and give them a place where they can be at home. Carpet One Floor & Home and Mohawk will provide all flooring materials and installation for forty-six Smart Homes scheduled to be built by the Building for Americas Bravest program over the next three years - a contribution totaling $2.3 million.
The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which created the mobile exhibit in remembrance of Stephen Siller, a NYC firefighter who bravely sacrificed his life to save others on 9/11, honors military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country.
