Boathouse Restaurant Set To Open Thursday - January 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Smelling of fresh varnish and new carpet, the new Boathouse on the Bay is expected to welcome guests for the first time Thursday.

Less than a month after the closure of McKennas on the Bay, a high-end restaurant that anchored Alamitos Bay Landing for more than a decade, the owners of Boathouse on the Bay said they are happy to turn things around and unveil a similar-quality dining and entertainment venue overlooking the water.

McKennas had been repossessed by its landlord after McKennas on the Bay LLC defaulted on its lease and other financial obligations, in part because of the death of majority owner Nick Limer. Limer, who was receiving treatment for cancer, passed away in November 2013.

The Boathouse restaurant concept was conceived by McKennas former general manager John Morris, who is working alongside restaurateur Eric Johnson. The two men also own Legends Sports Bar & Restaurant in Belmont Shore, and Johnson is an owner of the Auld Dubliner in downtown Long Beach.

Boat House on the Bay will be managed by a new company called Naples Restaurant Group LLC. Other business partners involved in the venture include David Copley, Dave Erickson, Glenn Russell, Josh Lowenthal and Matt Knabe.

This is a great new chapter we are beginning, Morris said, emphasizing that the group of partners put together to run the Boathouse are a slice of heaven combination of people he is excited to work with. Morris added that he would again be working with Chef Naga, the culinary mind behind the now-closed Mums restaurant on Pine Avenue.

Just days before opening, Morris and Johnson were bustling to complete last-minute details, including finalizing proofs of the menu, re-arranging seating, coordinating the installation of new signs for the business and scheduling required city inspections. The new restaurant will feature a variety of paintings by local maritime artist Bob Senske. Additionally, there are plans underway to expand the patio dining area after the reopening.

Johnson said the Boathouse is going to have high-end seafood and steak as well as a sushi bar. The restaurant, which has areas designated for both high-end and more casual dining, will be open daily, with entertainment scheduled every evening. Free Duffy boat rides to the restaurant also are available for dinner guests.

We have some small changes to the restaurant (McKennas), but nothing major, Johnson said. Its just a beautiful venue by the waterfront and its perfect for this type of restaurant.

The closure of McKennas on the Bay, and the addition of the Boathouse, will not impact McKennas on the Fly, a sister restaurant that opened a year ago at the Long Beach Airport, according to LGB officials.

Abundantly clear: Window films can save money invisibly - January 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

It could be the best home improvement you never see. Or not. It's hard to know.

Window film a transparent barrier that, its makers say, keeps bad sunrays from eating up your furniture and driving up your air-conditioning bills is at its best unseen.

And that's the problem. How do you know it's there? Because it's invisible, I'm tempted to put it in the same category as the Emperor's New Clothes, or the buying and selling of galactic stars. I worry that homeowners are buying into some big transparent lie.

It's like sunscreen for windows, those with more faith tell me. But I want more proof. Plus, I have other concerns about sunscreen for windows.

I like natural light in a house. "The space has great light," real estate agents will say, pointing out a plus in a home. Why kill it?

I like sunshine. I grew up on the West Coast, where, before I knew better, getting a great tan was like a second career. When I did know better, I avoided the sun like a bat and slathered on sunscreen. Now I have Vitamin D deficiency from not enough sun. Someone, somewhere, is wrong.

I like conspicuous consumption. I'd rather buy a new area rug or table than some not-obvious, no-fun home improvement, like, say, insulation.

Plus, I've seen bad window jobs. And just like nose jobs, you notice only the bad ones.

As it happens, there is a man whose job is to turn unenlightened cretins like me around on this subject.

Darrell Smith, executive director of the International Window Film Association, a group of manufacturers, distributors and installers, welcomes my skepticism.

Pajaro Valley gets start on $150 million in school bond projects - January 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WATSONVILLE -- For the first time since Cesar Chavez Middle School opened seven years ago, students are running laps on a track.

The new course is one of several school bond projects completed by the Pajaro Valley Unified School District during the winter break. Voters approved the $150 million bond measure in November 2012.

Students gave the $100,000 track -- $80,000 of which was covered by bond and $20,000 from funds donated from proceeds of the annual Wharf to Wharf race -- a thumbs up.

"It helps you go faster," said Dafny Lopez, a 12-year-old seventh-grader, after racing on the track for the first time during gym class Tuesday.

Coach Kathy Church has been pushing for a school track for several years. Running isn't only popular with gym classes but also with the dozens of students who participate in cross country and track, she said. The two sports provide a place where everyone is welcome and able to improve performance regardless of athletic ability.

Though the track is a bit shorter than the regulation 400 meters due to space constraints, it's an improvement, Church said. Students previously ran on a grassy athletic field pocked with gopher holes. In the mornings, when dew sat on the ground, the field was slippery. At best, students would finish the workout with sopping socks. At worst, conditions posed a safety risk.

"It's been a long wait, but finally it's done," Church said.

The district also completed other pressing projects, including:
