Jez Hastings at work at Longstaff Cycles
EXPERT bike builders at Longstaff Cycles have been commissioned to make a tricycle for the Japanese Paralympic Games team.
The Chesterton business said the custom-made machine would be the lightest it has ever built.
Longstaffs, which was started by the late George Longstaff in 1980, has a long history of making trikes for elite disabled athletes.
Paralympians from Australia, Canada, Denmark, Spain and Great Britain have all competed on tricycles made at the Albert Street workshop, which opened in 1986, with the business helping them bring home gold, silver and bronze medals.
Bike maker and builder Jez Hastings, known by everyone as Zonk, said: "All of our machines are made here, using the jig that George built himself 35 years ago.
"It will take about 60 hours to make the frame it's got to have enough flexibility for comfort and suspension but also a strength and stiffness to withstand pedalling forces."
As well as Paralympians, Longstaffs has made bikes and trikes for customers including amputee soldiers, older people with mobility problems and stroke patients.
And while the business, which employs five staff, concentrates on making specialist bikes, its focus is on ensuring everyone can enjoy cycling, with it custom-building everything from racing and touring bikes, to tandems and hybrid commuter bikes.
It also stages workshops teaching people how to maintain their bikes and has been involved in the Green Door project at Westport Lake, which offers several adapted cycles for hire by people with disabilities, as well as standard bikes.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- With the housing market stalled shy of its potential, investors who bought homebuilders D.R. Horton (DHI - Get Report), KB Home (KBH - Get Report), Lennar (LEN - Get Report), Pulte Group (PHM - Get Report), Ryland Group (RYL) or Toll Brothers (TOL - Get Report), recently should consider booking their profits. The mixed housing market data releasedover the last month should put a cap on further share price gains for these homebuilder stocks for now.
The most positive housing data recently released showed that sales of new homes in planned communities rose by 7.8% in February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 539,000 units. Thatwas the highest level of new home sales since February 2008.

However, strength in that data seriesdoes not jibe with the report of seasonally-adjusted single-family housing starts for February, which plunged 15% to an annual rate of 593,000. Single-family housing starts remain well below the normal annual rate of 1.1 million to 1.2 million units. Single-family starts are a broader measure of the market for new homes, as theycapture both new building in planned communities and homes custom-built on individual properties.

Fuquay-Varina, N.C. A former Camp Lejeune Marine who lost his leg in combat in Afghanistan got a new beginning Thursday.
Cpl. Ryan Wightman and his wife, Melissa, received a new home, courtesy of Operation: Coming Home, a nonprofit program that builds homes for disabled combat veterans who served in the Middle East.
During a morning ceremony, a man flew in on a glider to deliver the keys to the custom-built, 3,000-square-foot house in the Parker Pointe community of Fuquay-Varina. Gov. Pat McCrory was on hand to welcome the couple.
Ryan Wightman, 24, was injured in May 2012 while trying to help a fallen Marine in the Helmand province of Afghanistan. An improvised explosive device shattered his leg. After two years of multiple surgeries to try to save his lower leg, doctors removed it in September.
Before accepting the home, Ryan Wightman asked for a moment of silence for his fallen comrades.
"As a big a day as this is for me, there's a lot of people who didn't come back," he said.
The Wightmans, who left Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday to make the drive to North Carolina, said the experience of getting a home is surreal.
"The home is beautiful," Ryan Wightman said. "They took into consideration everything that we asked for."
The Wightmans are from Orange, Park, Fla., but said they wanted to live in the Raleigh area because of its beauty and the people being so friendly. They want to have children, and the home is a "strong incentive" to start a family, Ryan Wightman said.
"It's such a big, big thing for me to have a home that's our own," he said.

Southern Maryland home sales
Sarasota, Florida (PRWEB) March 26, 2015
A recently published article on CNN Money entitled '4 trends popping up in high-end kitchens' , featured comments from Steve Murray owner of the award-winning Sarasota Florida-based luxury home builder Murray Homes Inc.
The article featured comments from home builders on design trends that clients are currently requesting. Some of the popular features include steam ovens, touch to open cabinets, refrigerator drawers, and a new emphasis on larger more functional pantries.
Steve Murray commented on designing larger pantries with more features that are neatly kept hidden behind doors flush with cabinetry. The net effect is a larger more functional pantry that is not affecting the aesthetic appeal of the overall kitchen design. The clutter that often accompanies pantries remains hidden behind the door which is designed to blend in seamlessly with the cabinetry.
Home Builder Steve Murray commented to CNN Money, It is great that a large news agency such as CNN Money is keeping homeowners informed about new homes design trends. It's easy for homebuyers to accept the status quo if they are unaware of all of the home design possibilities and advances in home technology. Informing consumers about home design benefits the entire home building industry sector. Our latest home construction project Staysail Court in Lakewood Ranch, FL incorporates many of the features discussed in the article.
