Infrasense Continues with Ground Penetrating Radar and Infrared Surveys for Wisconsin Bridge Decks - March 28, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Infrasense was recently contracted to perform ground penetrating radar (GPR) and infrared thermography (IR) services on 17 bridge decks in Wisconsin's southwest region. These tests provide condition information for the reinforced concrete decks quickly and without the need for coring.

Arlington, MA (PRWEB) March 27, 2013

Since 2007, Infrasense has surveyed more than 300 bridge decks across Wisconsin using its multi-phase approach. After completing a quick and simple preliminary (Level 1) analysis, many are found to be in good condition and require no further analysis. Those found to have more significant deterioration levels are mapped in detail (Level 2), providing data to accurately plan, program, and budget maintenance and rehabilitation.

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) data is collected to estimate rebar depth and corrosion conditions. The GPR data is collected in a series of lines spaced 3 feet transversely across the width of the deck, with each line representing a cross sectional slice of the deck at a particular offset. Decks in good condition consist of strong and uniform radar reflections from the rebar. GPR data with weak and inconsistent reflections indicate rebar-level deterioration in the bridge deck.

The infrared data is collected in a series of passes across each deck, with each pass covering a deck width of between 12 and 15 feet. For a typical interstate deck with 2 lanes and left and right shoulders, the survey is carried out in four passes one in each lane and one in each shoulder. The survey produces a series of infrared images collected every foot of vehicle travel. During the survey, selected areas that appear delaminated in the IR image are manually sounded to confirm the presence of delamination. Because many of these decks have overlays, the reinforcing can be 4-5 inches from the surface, and sounding is not always capable of detecting delamination at this depth. For those locations where the delamination cannot be confirmed by sounding, testing is carried out using the Impact-Echo method. By analyzing wave frequencies through the concrete, the impact-echo equipment is capable of detecting delamination at any depth throughout the thickness of the deck.

Many agencies apply GPR and IR separately as tools for bridge deck assessment, or use only one preferred method. Each method has specific strengths and weaknesses, and Infrasense uses a combination of both to create a more effective bridge deck condition assessment. By combining IR and GPR surveys, the maximum amount of information can be obtained for the least cost. Decks with concrete overlays are common in Wisconsin, and illustrate how GPR and IR methods complement each other. Infrared surveys are effective in detecting overlay debonding, while GPR is effective in detecting rebar-level delamination. Combining GPR and IR methods becomes economical when applied with a two-level survey approach.

Skate Guitars breathes new life into old decks - March 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Skate Guitars are repurposed from old skateboard decks

Though looking street-worn, beaten and abused can actually be a rather favorable look for a skateboard deck, there comes a time when stylish scuff gives way to unsightly eyesore and it's time to break in a new board. Rather than simply throw away all that quality wood, offbeat Argentinian luthier Ezequiel Galasso and pro skateboarder Gianfranco de Gennaro Gilmour have teamed up to repurpose old boards into "born to shred" guitars.

Unfortunately, there's not a great deal of information available about Skate Guitars. We do know that each guitar is actually made from the remains of at least two end-of-life skateboards, with both the body and neck made from layered maple. Since these git-fiddles already have more than their fair share of scrapes, dings and scratches, you can really go wild without fear of inflicting too much damage to the finish something that the creators seem to encourage.

All of the instruments are handmade at the Galasso Guitars workshop in Buenos Aires, and the externally-mounted hardware (including P-90, lipstick and humbucking pickups) appears to come in a number of different configurations. Each of the thin-bodied show models photographed in the gallery sports a single volume knob and Galasso branding on the head. One or two even pack whammy bars.

Though models do look to have made their way into the hands of some players, we've been unable to get any pricing or availability information from the Skate Guitar team.

Zoning Board of Appeals nixes illegal decks - March 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

They say its easier to ask for forgiveness than permission that is unless you build illegal decks on your Mayflower Street home.

The Zoning Board of Appeals recently surprised some audience members when the board voted against an applicants request for a continuance, based on his past behavior.

According to Building Commissioner Paul McAuliffe, Michael Getchell filed for a permit to build decks onto his home at 39 Mayflower St. in 2007, was told no, since the plan encroached on his neighbors property, and then he built them anyway.

In 2011, he was told he needed to contact the building inspector or remove the structure. Getchell then, apparently, filed for a permit. The Zoning Board of Appeals denied that request Oct. 30, 2 012 and ordered Getchell to remove the structure. He didnt.

In December, he was slapped with a $100 fine and a violation notice. Two weeks later, McAuliffe said, Getchell again filed for a special permit.

But instead of showing up for his recent hearing, Getchell sent the board a request for a continuance and was nowhere to be seen.

While ZBA members Ed Conroy and David Peck were in favor of granting the continuance, a majority of the board voted against it, and the hearing proceeded without the applicants presence.

Hes got a hot tub on his deck, Hadley LeClair, of 41 Mayflower St., told the board. If someone backs into that deck its going to drop on him. This is four feet from my property line. Its a 14-foot deck.

LeClaire said Getchell not only added the deck, he constructed a second deck on the roof and doubled the size of his shed.

We denied this application once before and it was built anyway, ZBA Chairman Peter Conner said.
