Demolition continues on North Mercer campus - January 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

As the Mercer Island School District prepares to send Elementary #4 out for bid next week, construction crews continue demolition and abatement work on the North Mercer campus.

Project manager Brandy Fox said crews are continuing abatement in the main gym and theater building while the classroom building, with interior abatement complete, is well into demolition, with crews removing roofing materials and sorting the scraps of concrete from metal.

"It's like peeling an onion, you're peeling layer after layer off," Fox said of the demolition work. "It's more of a process than it was 20 years ago, but it's something we anticipated in our schedule and everybody anticipates that now."

Most of the demolition materials, which are sorted as concrete, steel, and general debris, are recyclable. One worker on-site noted crews were able to recycle "everything but wood" and roofing insulation.

"It's the only cost-effective way to do it," Fox said. "Ten years ago, we used to require recycling to be done. Now the market creates an environment where there's no reasonable way to do it without recycling."

At the high school, crews continue work on the extensions of the 100, 200 and 300 halls. Ten classrooms will be added, with four being science classrooms and six general purpose rooms. Fox said the big work going on inside the school recently has been the addition of men's and women's restrooms, with crew members taking advantage of working in an empty school over winter break.

Fox said the intent is to finish the construction projects at the high school this summer and be ready for the beginning of the 2015 school year. At the North Mercer campus, abatement and demolition work will finish in February, with plans to award the contract and begin construction in March. The district plans for the school to be ready for the 2016 school year.

"It's a huge milestone for us," Fox said of Elementary #4 going out to bid. "We're excited and feel really fortunate to be at the spot we're at with the current bidding climate."

UNIBEN workers protest demolition of official quarters - January 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Some employees of the University of Benin, Edo State, on Tuesday protested against the alleged demolition of their official quarters by the state government.

The workers, numbering 25, alleged that the demolition was carried out on Monday night on the orders of the state Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, without prior notice.

They also accused the government of disrespecting the court over the disputed property, located on Edo Osagie Avenue in the General Residential Area, Benin, which they said was pending in court.

It was learnt that no fewer than 16 apartments, including that of a former Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Osayuki Oshodin, were demolished.

It was gathered that the 16 bungalows were given to UNIBEN by a former military governor of the Old Bendel State, Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, in 1970, sequel to the establishment of the institution, then known as Midwest Institute of Technology.

It was also learnt that the South South Bureau Chief of the Daily Independent Newspapers, Mr. Francis Onoiribholo, who was present during the demolition was allegedly beaten up by some persons for taking photographs.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities had, on December 23, raised concern over the alleged harassment of some of its members by suspected thugs over the disputed property.

It explained in a statement signed by the ASUU UNIBEN Chairman, Mr. Anthony Monye-Emina, that the university had filed an appeal on December 17, 2014, against a court judgment issued on the disputed parcels of land, which was occupied by some of its members.

Monye-Emina on Tuesday accused Oshiomhole of taking the law into his hands by ordering the demolition, even when the institution had secured a stay of execution order on the case, which would have been heard in court this month.

Demolition of downtown Orlando's 'round building' ongoing - January 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Deadlines have come and gone and the remains of the so called "round building" still sit on front of the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center in Downtown Orlando.

Demolition started in early September, and it was hoped the building, also known as the American Federal Building, would be gone before the new theaters opened in November. It didn't happen.

The city released a statement on Tuesday, which reads in part, "While we are disappointed that the demolition of the "round building" has taken longer than anticipated, the demolition process is still on-going and continuing as fast as possible."

The statement also said that officials will consider issuing fines once the building is down.

Staff of the University of Benin, Edo State, took to the streets on Tuesday to protest the alleged demolition of their official residential quartres by the state government.

The staff, numbering 25, alleged that demolition was carried outon Monday night on the orders of the State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, without prior notice.

They also accused the Edo State Government of disrespecting the rule of law on a court case over the disputed properties, located on Edo Osagie Avenue, at the General Residential Area in Benin, which they said was pending in court.

It was learnt that no fewer than 18 residential apartments, including that of the former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Osayuki Oshodin, were demolished.

Demolition Means Hope For Binghampton Residents - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Binghampton (FOX13) - It's the answer to a prayer for Binghampton residents. The demolition of an abandoned apartment complex on Tillman is providing the gateway for a potential grocery store to set up shop on the site.

It was "D-Day"....Demolition Day for one more inner city Memphis eyesore.

No one seemed more appreciative of the initial destruction of the dilapidated 24-unit apartment complex at the corner of Tillman and Sam Cooper Boulevard than former tenant Veronica Skinner. She had lived there for five long years before moving out last November after the property was sold to the non-profit organization Binghampton Development Corporation.

Yes, it was rough over here toward the end. It had got real rough, says Skinner. The drugs and everything, so, I think it's best they tear them down.

With members of the BDC among those watching the eventual $380K demolition, the group felt they had again met their continuing goal to enhance the image of the Binghampton community.

BDC Executive Director Robert Montague says, We've been working for six years to get the land pulled together. We had to do seven deals to acquire seven and a half acres of land from the police station to Sam Cooper and then this side and over here across the street.

Not only does it mean getting rid of a blighted area, but it sets the stage for a long-awaited dream for the neighborhood. Negotiations are underway for a full-service grocery to occupy the site which could become a welcomed oasis in what's been an urban food desert.

It'll be good to have a supermarket close cause everybody don't have a vehicle and we deserve a grocery store too, said Skinner.

Not only is it important for food and nutrition, but it's important from hope, said Montague.
