Work is continuing on complex property demolitions in the Port Hills area of Christchurch.
Main Road in Sumner will be closed intermittently at night from tonight until January 9 to allow for the demolition of critical parts of properties on Clifton Terrace, known as the "Clifton Cluster".
The properties were significantly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and were red-zoned.
CERA Port Hills manager Brendan Winder says number 40 will be the first house to go tonight followed by number 42.
The road closure covers the full length of the protective container wall and will ensure that "the minor possibility that demolition material could land on Main Road does not impact on public safety", Mr Winder said.
Main Road will be closed for 25 minutes every half hour from 9pm - 4am.

BOSTON The city of Boston has begun demolition of a structurally deficient bridge that led to a homeless shelter on a Boston Harbor island.
The closure of the 53-year-old bridge in October forced the evacuation of the 450-bed shelter and other programs on Long Island.
The public works department said Monday the demolition was underway with a target completion date of April 30.
The city said Walsh Construction Co., a Chicago-based firm with a regional office in Canton, was awarded the $20.6 million contract after submitting the lowest bid among seven firms.
A replacement bridge is expected to cost more than $80 million and take up to three years to build.
Mayor Martin Walsh's office says the city has found other beds for residents displaced by the shelter's evacuation.

It will cost $20.6 million to dismantle the deteriorated Long Island Bridge, Mayor Walshs office said this morning. The demolition project, which prefaces the construction of a new bridge, began today and is expected to continue until April 30. Walsh Construction Company, of Canton, won the bid to complete the project.
Officials evacuated the islands inhabitants and closed the rusty link between Quincy and the largest harbor island on October 8, following years of concern about its structural integrity. Corroded metal, rusted plate connectors, and its questionable overall weight-bearing ability resulted in weight restrictions created in 1995 that remained in place until the closure.
The bridge is 63 years old and serves as the only entrance to the island, which has hosted a recovery center for addicts and Bostons largest homeless shelter since 1983. The Long Island shelter was home to hundreds at the time of its closure. Those people have been redirected to other homes, and temporarily stayed at health centers like the South End Fitness Center until they could be placed. The Boston Public Health Commissions website advises people looking for shelter to go to the Woods-Mullen Shelter on Mass. Ave.

Constructing a new bridge will cost an additional $80 million and take 2-3 years to complete. Officials also say a design period could take up to 12 months. The bridge has been rehabilitated at least seven times since 1990, costing more millions.
