JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- The demolition of a notorious building in Johnstown's West End that's been blighted for years was promised Monday by the end of the month.

"We smelled the gobs baking and the bread baking and it was great," said Cassy Sojak, who lives across the street from the building.

That's the way neighbors remember the onetime bakery, now a blighted building that's been on 6 News dozens of times in recent years. Most people know it as the former Harris Boyer Building. It's been considered an eyesore and a safety hazard for years.

Just a few months ago, its owner said it would be coming down. Neighbors told 6 News then they didn't believe it, saying they had been given empty promises for years. But on Monday, the owner's attorney made a new promise.

Owner John Hrivnak was in court Monday for the 16th time, fighting a pending lawsuit by the city for code violations dating back to 2011.

"It takes time to put into place all of the steps that are necessary before you can achieve the goal, which is demolition, said Johnstown attorney David Weaver, who represents Hrivnak.

"It's just run down. We've seen rats, stray cats, everything over there," Sojak said.

"We're concerned that the hazard and the eyesore and the dysfunctional structure be demolished for the benefit of everybody," Weaver said.

Mayor D. Michael Collins called demolition of the vacant Clarion Hotel on Reynolds Road the beginning of a blight-free district in South Toledo.

This has been a long time coming, the mayor said Monday at a news conference to mark the start of demolition work on the longtime eyesore.

While no one has expressed interest in buying the property, the mayor also said he expects the city should be able to sell the parcel within six to eight months of demolition.

Mayor Collins emphasized the projects importance to revitalizing South Toledo, saying that the Clarion, originally a Ramada Inn when it opened in 1974, was once a vanguard of activity.

This is the front door of the city of Toledo, he said of the area, which sits just off the Ohio Turnpike and was once a booming retail district.

Demolition of the building at 2340 S. Reynolds Rd. has been under discussion for months. The hotel has stood empty since 2009 when the previous owners, Toledo Hotel Investment Group LLC, defaulted on $2 million in loans.

Work to raze Clarion begins

It's the next step in the changing face of Telford. The former Do It All and Focus store, known as The Green Shed, has blighted the face of the town for a number of years.

Now The Green Shed, standing between the 250 million Southwater development and the new Asda Malinsgate, is being torn down ready for the next major revamp of Telford's Shopping Centre.

The site will be used for the Southern Quarter, a hub of restaurants and shops that form one part of the 200m redevelopment masterplan for Telford Shopping Centre.

Tim Binnington, chairman of Sovereign Land Management LTD, the company overseeing the work, said: "We have been doing bits already as the start of the project but this will be the first substantial progress that people will be able to see.

"The Green Shed has been a bit of an eyesore and it really stands out next to all these new developments, Southwater and the Asda."

This year marks Telford Shopping Centre's 40th anniversary and Mr Binngton said the new developments marked a new chapter in the Shopping Centre's story.

"There is new investment in the area," he said. "I notice that the council is doing an enormous amount of work at the moment, what is happening is very exciting."

Demolition contractors, Shrewsbury-based building company LG Blower and RVC Demolition from Church Stretton, took control of the building yesterday to begin the demolition, which will take around 10 weeks.

The Green Shed was built in the early 1980s as WHSmith Do-It-All, which later became Focus and then The Range.

It has had a number of short-term tenants since the redevelopment of Southwater began.

Demolition day draws near for Telford's Green Shed

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (COMMONWEAL DEVELOPMENT NEWS RELEASE) -- Haymarket Concepts, LLC has awarded a contract to complete demolition of the buildings located at the site identified for the Confluence Project to Alliance Steel Construction from Superior, WI. This company was selected as the demolition contractor following a systematic request for proposals and bid process. The following buildings are slated for demolition: Market Square Building, Farmers Store, and the buildings located on the west side of South Barstow from the Eau Claire River to Eau Claire Street. Demolition is scheduled to begin the week of July 7th and may take five to six weeks to complete.

The Mixed Use Building site will be ready for the construction of the residential/commercial building early this fall with completion scheduled for June, 2016. The disturbed areas of the arts center site will be filled, seeded and maintained as grass until construction begins on that phase of the project.

Much of the building material is being salvaged or recycled. Where possible, items with architectural significance have been saved for re-use. Significant attention will be given to the removal and disposition of hazardous building materials to assure compliance with all safety and environmental regulations.

Haymarket officials said "that while the buildings are a safety hazard and need to be removed, this is significant as it launches a major strategy designed to revitalize the South Barstow Business District."

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

More changes are on the way for the former Southwyck Mall area as demolition begins on a vacant hotel near the location of the former mall.

The Southwyck Mall closed in 2008 and was torn down the following year. The land where it sat has been empty ever since. The vacant property has been blamed for the blight that surrounds it, including the former Clarion Hotel on Reynolds Road.

The hotel has been hit by vandals, homeless, and a fire recently. Demolition of the building began Monday, to the delight of city officials and people living nearby.

"It's very exciting, not only for the City of Toledo and the big blight issue, because this might be one of the biggest pieces of blight in our city right now," said Toledo Councilman Matt Cherry.

As manager of the Paddy Jack's near the hotel, Nick Rice has had to deal with the eyesore for years.

"I can't wait," he said. "Everybody that rides by it every day, they can't wait for it to be gone, either. All people in the community, they've seen it be a wreck for a really long time. It's about time they did something about it."

The first part of the process is the removal of asbestos, then the building will be demolished. It's expected to take about three months, but it will pave the way for growth in the Southwyck area.

"I think this will play a major factor in more businesses investing in the Reynolds Corridor," said Cherry.

Several businesses are reportedly interested in the area. Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins says Home Goods is planning to come to the area. The cost for demolition will be about $450,000, down significantly from the original estimate of $900,000.
