Demolition work starts on 'death-trap' mill
Updated 9:48am Monday 7th July 2014 in News
Howe Bridge Number Three Mill
DEMOLITION work is under way on a mill that has been labelled an eyesore, landmark and potential death-trap.
Howe Bridge Number Three Mill has stood in the centre of Atherton for 124 years but has been empty and derelict for a year-and-a-half.
Work has now started to demolish the building and the adjoining Number Six Mill added in 1919 as part of a plan to redevelop the site into a housing estate.
Shahram Sakhdari, head of development at Realty Estates, which owns the site, said: The demolition was originally approved as part of a supermarkets plan to build a store there but that fell through and now there is a plan to build up to 135 houses on the site.
That may change though as another planning application will need to be submitted by the housing company.
The demolition was believed to have been delayed due to fears that there was asbestos in the building.
But Mr Sakhdari said: The delay was not a delay from our point of view. One of the planning conditions was that the building needed to be documented because of its heritage. Because of that demolition did not start as early as expected but it was not a delay.

Demolition work starts on 'death-trap' mill
DEMOLITION works will begin today on six older buildings at the rear of the CQUniversity Mackay City campus.
They are being removed to make way for a car park, which will have at least 110 spaces.
Demolition is expected to take four months, with building works to start in November.
The older buildings are at the corner of Wood and Shakespeare Sts.
Last week CQ TAFE and CQUniversity officially merged into one outfit. It is now the biggest regional university in Australia.
The demolition is part of a $10.2million refurbishment of the former TAFE campus.
CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor and president Scott Bowman said the refurbishment signalled a bright future for the newly merged institution.
"We've got big plans for big changes at Mackay City Campus, and it's important that the new designs create a welcoming atmosphere, because we really do want to invite our community in, to find out what CQUniversity has to offer," he said.
A number of exciting developments are in the pipeline for the campus, with a chiropractic clinic to be based at the Sydney St site.
The clinic will allow allied health students to complete their work placements.

STEUBENVILLE - It was hard to see the two-story house at 1225 State St. because of the over grown bushes and high grass.
The first floor windows were boarded over but the front door stood open to an empty interior.
But the three-man crew from X-Treme Demolition of Wellsville wasted no time in placing a payloader in position at the back of the building to start removing the walls, pushing and pulling the structure to the ground.
WORK?UNDER?WAY An X-Treme Clean employee watched a backhoe operator tear down the back wall of a condemned house at 1225 State St. The house was razed and removed and the demolition crews smoothed out the vacant lot as part of the Steubenville Community Development Block Grant-funded program to remove condemned buildings. The city's 2014 demolition program using Community Development Block Grant funds is now under way with 11 condemned structures on the demolition list this year.
The first step for the demolition crew members was to drag matresses from the vacant house to the curb.
Then came the recycling of any and all metal in and on the house followed by the destruction of what was once someone's home.
"Our building inspectors will check on a house that has been turned into our office as dilapidated. Or we may see a building that is dilapidated. If the building needs to be demolished we try to get the property owner to have the house demolished and in some cases we are successful. If the city has to demolish the house and the property is a low and moderate income neighborhood, we put the building on our CDBG list. It usually takes about two years on the list before the actual demolition takes place," explained Urban Projects Director Chris Petrossi.
"The property owner agreed to allow us to take down the house because she couldn't afford to have the work done. But she will still be responsible for maintaining the lot. The city does not take over ownership of the property. That still remains the responsibility of the owner," Petrossi noted.
The house was located at the corner of State Street and Henry Avenue, a neighborhood where almost every yard is neatly trimmed and sometimes enclosed by a small fence.
