The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday said it will recover the charges for demolition of illegal flats at Worli's Campa Cola Compound from the housing societies. This means occupants of legal flats too may have to pay up for the demolition drive.

As reported in dna earlier, the BMC is gearing up to issue tenders worth around Rs2 crore for demolition of 96 unauthorised flats across seven buildings in the compound. The corporation has now said the amount will be recovered from the society.

"We are going to recover the charges for demolition of structures from the society and not based on whether the occupants are legal or illegal flat owners," additional municipal commissioner Mohan Adtani said.

He added that if the society refuses to pay up the demolition charges, then the BMC will recover the same through property taxes. "If they continue to evade payment, we will have to seal properties and conduct auction as per norms," Adtani added.

Meanwhile, residents slammed the BMC for planning to recover charges from the ones likely to lose their shelters. "People are set to lose their lives' earnings if their homes are razed. It is very inhuman to tax residents in such a case. Anyways, our efforts are focused more at saving homes than thinking about the demolition charges," a resident said, wishing anonymity.
