Trust building in Florence gets closer to demolition - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Demolition is already taking place in the 200th block of West Evans Street to make room for the soon to come Francis Marion University Health and Sciences Building.

"Keep your eyes on it, before you know it, it will be gone," said Jason Wofford.

"We knocked the terminal down so that we could get access onto the property," said Wofford.

Jason Wofford is the vice president of Wofford Demolition. That's the company charged with clearing the Trust building, and few other buildings that shares the property the Trust sits on.

Wofford mapped out a new demolition timeline for when the Trust Building property will be clear and ready for Francis Marion University's new Medical School.

Crews have already torn down the terminal once used by a utility company.

"I guess next on the agenda would be these two buildings behind me, the white buildings," said Wofford.

Right now, demolition crews are gutting the buildings, which includes removing any recyclable materials such as metal and copper.

Emerald, the company subcontracted to clear the Trust building of asbestos, has been working to remove the contaminant.

The company said it will take an additional four weeks of decontamination before the building is ready for demolition.

National Demolition Association Launches New, More User-friendly Website - May 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Doylestown, PA (PRWEB) May 10, 2014

The National Demolition Association has launched a new website -- http://www.demolitionassociation.com with greatly improved, user-friendly features, streamlined content, and mobile-response design that allows the same site to be accessed from desktop, tablet or mobile phone. Website visitors will find clear visual navigation cues to help them quickly scan for what they need, assuring that no information is more than three clicks away.

The new NDA website was designed with NDA members and the many publics we serve in mind, said Kim Wieland, Director of Member Services for the NDA. In the development phase, we worked with our members to learn what was most important to them. The goal was to make the site convenient to use, as well as a reflection of NDAs role as the global source of all things demolition.

NDA Members now can enter the website through a members-only portal that delivers a more enhanced viewing experience, giving them access to information not available to the general public. The section is integrated into the main website so they no longer need to navigate through a second site.

The homepage of the website now includes weekly updates of Industry News, a link to the NDA Blog to keep members and the public up-to-date on regulatory and compliance issues, and the latest on safety, environmental and business topics. The NDA Twitter feed from @NDAMakingWay is now prominently displayed on the left side of the landing page as well as all internal pages, delivering the news as it happens.

A quick find online directory of NDA Members and Associate Members and their specialized skills found on the NDA homepage can direct visitors to members and suppliers. The directory can be tailored to searches in particular states or according to the services or products needed. In addition, the Quick Find tab located at the top of the each website page allows NDA Members to gain access to a State Regulation Resource Locator and to find Concrete & Asphalt Crushing Facility, C&D Landfill, and Mixed C&D Waste Processors by state.

We view the many enhancements and additions to the website as a key member service for those companies which belong to our organization, Wieland said. The goal is to let various stakeholders such as municipalities, commercial real estate developers, or government regulators easily find the information they are looking for about the industry, the NDA and our membership.

Full information is now posted for NDAs educational webinars on a variety of topics, with registration forms included. And as part of the website redesign, more information and resources are now available on industry topics that include Disaster Response, Environmental Stewardship and Community Development.

The NDA website can be found at http://www.demolitionassociation.com.

NASA still determining how to clean up soil, groundwater under structures

THE NEXT STEP IN CLEANUPAt top, a Coca Area test stand at Santa Susana Field Laboratory in Simi Valley is one of several that has been proposed for demolition. Above, the Bravo Area test stand will likely be retained. Both are located in SSFLs Area II, which is overseen by NASA. Photos Courtesy of M. Fellows/NASA As part of the ongoing cleanup effort at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory, NASA announced May 1 that it plans to demolish several buildings on its portion of the site.

But the decision on how to clean up soil and groundwater is being delayed to allow the federal agency to look for a method that would not entail excavating almost 500,000 cubic yards of soil, according to Allen Elliott, SSFL program director.

Were hoping to find ways to treat the soil and excavate less of it, he said. Were also evaluating the extent of contamination, and (testing) should last until late fall.

Dan Hirsch, president of nuclear policy nonprofit Committee to Bridge the Gap, said he hopes NASA remains committed to cleaning up the site.

But the agencys delay on determining a strategy to handle the cleanup of soil and groundwater is troubling, he said.

If NASA is looking at alternative ways to meet their cleanup obligations, then thats fine, Hirsch added. But if they are looking for ways to break their agreement and leave most of the contaminated soil at the site, then were deeply concerned about that.

The 2,850-acre field lab, which sits in the southeast hills of Simi Valley, was used as a nuclear test site and for research in the development of ballistic missiles, roc kets and space shuttle equipment since 1947. In 1959, a portion of the field lab known as Area IV suffered a partial nuclear meltdown. Efforts to clean up the site began in 2010.

PIECE OF HISTORYRazing of the Bravo test stand at Santa Susana Field Lab has been delayed. Courtesy of M. Fellows/NASA Boeing Co. owns about 80 percent of the field lab, including Area IV. The federal government owns the remaining 20 percent of the land: all of Area II and part of Area I. NASA oversees the 20 percent portion.

NASA is one of three government agencies responsible for site cleanup. The other two agencies, which are handling Boeings portion of the site, are the U.S. Department of Energy and the Department of Toxic Substances Control.
