Efforts to stop the demolition of the 110-year-old Clinton School annex in Clintonville arent dead.
The Clintonville Area Commission will hold a special meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Clinton Heights Lutheran Church, 15 Clinton Heights Ave., to discuss asking Columbus schools and the Columbus City Council to halt the demolition until the needs of the school and community can be further analyzed.
That comes after the area commission voted 6-1 on Thursday against the demolition permit that city officials had approved. That vote delays the demolition until April 29.
Commissioner Nancy Kuhel said commissioners want to delay the demolition of what she called a perfectly usable building before we do something that cant be undone.
Some parents fear that Clinton Elementary School students will be forced to attend other schools if the annex is demolished and there isnt enough room to handle enrollment growth. The schools enrollment has grown from 352 to 425 since the 2011-12 school year.
People live in that neighborhood because of that school, Kuhel said. As the school goes, that neighborhoods going to go.
Other parents want the annex torn down to make room for more playground space.
Columbus school officials have said they do not plan to delay or stop the demolition. The cost to demolish the building and remove any contaminants from the site is $70,000, schools spokesman Jeff Warner said.
A Clintonville Area Commission committee concluded that renovating the 9,422-square-foot building would cost $300,000 to $400,000. Columbus schools said it would cost $1 million to bring it up to modern standards. The annex was built as a township school in 1904.

THE demolition of Red Road has been criticised as a crass celebration, but no-one has suggested that is the intention.
If it was to be a millennium-style countdown and the destruction of the five towers was the spectacular culmination of the opening ceremony then it would absolutely be inappropriate and downright stupid.
However I don't believe that will be the case.
As part of the story of the city, the demolition of the flats can and should be a reflective moment where the mistakes of the past and the myriad social problems that blighted Red Road and elsewhere for years, and still exist in Glasgow, are recognised and not swept under the Parkhead pitch.
If Glasgow was to show only the shiny and new to the world, beaming images of Buchanan Street, the Hydro and smiling people in smart riverside homes, with tartan bagpiping kitsch, then that would be crass and misrepresenting the reality of this city.
Some of the criticism is understandable and apart from the logistical risks, the fact asylum seekers are still living for a few months in the last block standing is an obvious problem, which requires more thought.
But why shouldn't the final minutes of Red Road be shown in the opening ceremony? And while we are at, it let's recognise the decline of the industries such as the shipyards in Govan, and engineering works at Parkhead and Possilpark, and the social damage that followed.
As well as the successes that Glasgow has had in its history, it must be recog-nised that not everyone has shared in that.
For years it was obvious that high-rise living was not working. But nothing was done and people were living in modern-day slums in homes built to eradicate the problem.
PRETTY soon the reality was no-one who had a choice wanted to live in the flats.

After years of planning, a former military reserve center near Wilmington's Greenfield Lake has been demolished.
Removing the former Adrian B. Rhodes Armed Forces Reserve Center is another step toward the implementation of plan to build housing for the formerly homeless.
The demolition is part of an agreement between the city and Lakeside Partners of Wilmington Inc. The city owns the 4.26-acre property at 2144 W. Lake Shore Drive. Eventually, the city plans to transfer ownership to Lakeside Partners.
Initially, the partnership was composed of the Wilmington Interfaith Hospitality Network, the Good Shepherd Center and Wilmington Housing Finance and Development Inc.
Only Good Shepherd Center remains a member of Lakeside Partners.
Katrina Knight, Good Shepherd's executive director, said the circumstances of the other two organizations changed.
"When this process started, no one thought it would take eight years or more," she said.
The city formed a committee in 2006 to consider uses for the building, which would later be donated by the U.S. Department of Defense. City officials determined federal guidelines required the city to use the donated property to help the homeless. The center closed in 2011 and the city officially accepted the property in 2012.
According to a 2010 agreement between Lakeside Partners and the city, the plan was to build up to 24 housing units with a mix of bedrooms to house both families and individuals.
