Excavators begin demolition of Brewster Towers high-rises - March 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition crews broke into one of four 15-story high-rises Monday at the Frederick Douglass Homes; it's the final phase of the demolition project.

Demolition crews broke into one of four 15-story high-rises Monday at the Frederick Douglass Homes after city officials formally announced the next and final phase of the demolition project.

Speakers included Mayor Mike Duggan, former mayor Dave Bing, White House executive director Don Graves, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development assistant secretary Sandra Henriquez, and Detroit Housing Commission Executive Director Kelley Lyons.

Crews completed the initial demolition of 96 low-rise row houses in October 2012 and began toppling two six-story mid-rise buildings that contained 154 units in late December. Those units now leveled, Nick Straub, general manager at the Carleton-based demolition company Homrich Inc., said his crews will use high-reach excavators to remove the four towers that border the northwest corner of I-75 and I-375.

Lyons said it will take about eight weeks to level the towers, and the removal of foundations and plumbing will continue into summer.

After the towers are down, the recreation center at the corner of Wilkins and Chrysler Service Drive will be all that remains. Duggan said there are no plans for the recreation center because the building is not in HUDs jurisdiction.

Duggan said the city is currently negotiating uses of the vacant 18 acres of land. Although he declined to reveal specific plans, he said the space will be used for new housing and economic opportunities.

The continuing effort to remove the abandoned structures was made possible by a $6.5 million HUD grant awarded to the Detroit Housing Commission from the Capital Emergency Grant Program.

Formerly known as the Brewster-Douglass Towers, the housing complex opened in 1938 with 701 units, and had 941 units by 1941. The windowless, graffiti-tattooed ruins have been a main-stage of blight and crime since the city fully closed the housing projects in 2008.

Demolition of Christian Science church in downtown D.C. progresses - March 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Two blocks from the White House, heavy-duty wrecking equipment has been taking big bites out of brutalism, bringing a dramatic end to a years-long saga about the workings of bureaucracy and the pleas of preservationists.

Since late last month, the northwest corner of 16th and I streets NW has been fenced off while the Christian Science church that was built there has been coming down.

Efforts at preserving it did not focus so much on its proximity to the White House, or its prominent place on 16th, one of the Districts most celebrated streets.

Instead, those who sought to save the structure cited its significance as an example of brutalism. Despite the seemingly unsavory implications of its name, brutalism is an accepted school of architecture, emphasizing bulk, strength and exposed concrete.

It was prominent for a time in the last century, and the word derives from the French wording for rough concrete rather than any malign intent.

Designed in the 1960s, the building had been in service for only a few decades before the congregation of the Third Church of Christ Scientist began trying to have it replaced by a new sanctuary.

The difficulty and expense of upkeep have been cited as prime motivations.

The church joined with developer ICG Properties on a plan to replace the church with an office building that would include a new sanctuary.

This touched off a drawn-out battle over historic preservation that was as vigorously contested as any in the District in recent years.

Extended as it was, the process eventually reached a conclusion.
