Residents of Badia East, a suburb of Lagos, whose houses were demolished in February 2013, on Wednesday appealed to the state government to hasten the payment of their compensation.
Some of the affected people, who converged at the National Theater for verification, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
NAN reports that about 10,000 people lost their homes or livelihood in a forced eviction and demolition of Badia East by the Lagos State Government more than a year ago.
NAN learnt that the residents lost about 200 houses and businesses during the areas demolition.
Prince Justus Ilawole, a former Chairman, Badia East Community Development Association, said the people were eager to collect the compensation because of the pains inflicted on them.
Ilawole said that he received a text message to clear some issues on his verification form which would enable him to receive his money.
I appeal to the government to hasten the payment of this money because it will reduce our suffering. I am here today to clear issues on my account number, he said.
The former community leader said that only a phase of Badia East with an estimated 2,300 households were affected by the demolition.
He bemoaned the situation where the affected people had yet to get a place to live since the exercise.
He recalled that they were living in the National Theatre vicinity until 1973 when government relocated them to Badia East.

"Continuing yung our efforts to monitor yung mga lock up cells at do un-announced inspections together with the Commission on Human Rights." "Yung mga commanding officers, provincial directors, chief of police are required to submit a compliance which we compile and submit to the Commission on Human Rights," saad pa ni Baas. "Definitely they will be facing administrative charges, ongoing na po yung pre-charge evaluation and investigation taking care by IAS and they are not exempted in criminal liability na isasampa ng mga relatives," dagdag pa ni Baas. Ani Mayor, "Rule dapat kasama police sation hiwalay minor babae lalake." "One of the reasons na-relieve sila."
(Victor Cosare / Ruth Navales, UNTV News)

OAK RIDGE (WATE) - The final truckload of debris from the K-25 Building was shipped from the East Tennessee Technology Park Tuesday.
The mile-long building was constructedin 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project. The final demolition ended in December, 2013. Since then, workers have been transporting the debris from the site.
Officials say the demolition process took longer than expected because of a radioactive isotope known as Technetium-99 that contaminated the final section of the building. To simplify the process, workers painted the contaminated parts a color of blue to be shipped separate from other segments.
"As this phase of the project is completed, it's a good time to remember the many people who were responsible for constructing, operating, and demolishing this historically significant facility," said Mark Whitney, manager of the Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management. "The people who built K-25 under intense schedules, the operators who helped our nation succeed through World War II and the Cold War, and the cleanup crews that were able to safely demolish and transport waste from the Department's largest-ever demolition project despite challenges."
Since the building's closure in 1964, demolition has been top of the list for the environmental clean-up program in Oak Ridge.
The K-25 Building demolition project began in 2008 by Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC in the west wing. URS|CH2M Oak Ridge LLC (UCOR) then took over the project in 2011 and finished the demolition process of the east and north wings.
Total waste counts from the clean-up project are as follow: 6,000 compressors, 3,000 converters, 187,000 cubic yards of steel, 3,800 miles of electrical conductors, and 1.2 million cubic feet of asbestos insulation. All in all, more than 460,000 cubic yards of K-25 waste have been shipped for disposal.
"While this final load of waste was just one in thousands of shipments that have been made, it represents so much more," said Leo Sain, UCOR President and Project Manager. "A great deal of planning and careful execution has allowed us to finish this project safely and ahead of schedule, bringing a successful end to the largest demolition project DOE has ever undertaken."
The Department plans to find ways to honor and interpret the historical significance of the sight, in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act of 2012. DOE's Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management will construct an equipment building that replicates the gaseous diffusion technology.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Demolition has begun at the site of the old Baptist Hospital in South Knoxville.
Contractors began this week knocking down the first of five buildings on the site.
Work began on the interior of the building in January, and now crews have moved on to the outside of the building, demolishing walls and other exterior features.
The site was sold in December to Riverwalk Investors of Augusta, Ga. for a total of $6,250,000.
The property will be part of a more than $150 million redevelopment project, bringing in a hotel, apartments and retail.
The first building may take a few weeks to completely demolish. Officials hope to have all five buildings knocked down by June.
The project is being paid for partially by a tax-increment financing (TIF) transaction, which will direct $22 million in new city and county property taxes over a 20-year period toward the project.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The final truckload of debris from the K-25 Building demolition project was shipped from East Tennessee Technology Park Tuesday.
The K-25 building was built in 1943 as part of the Manhattan Project. At that time, it was the worlds largest building. Demolition of the mile-long, U-shaped structure was completed in December and since then workers have focused on removing the resulting demolition debris.
Because the final section of the building contained components that were contaminated with a slow-decaying radioactive isotope workers had to segregate the contaminated components in the field.
Workers simplified that process by painting the components with higher contamination bright blue before demolition. These higher-contamination components were shipped off-site for disposal, with the remainder of the debris going to the Environmental Management Waste Management Facility located on DOEs Oak Ridge Reservation.
The K-25 Building operated until 1964, producing enriched uranium for defense and commercial purposes. During the past decades, as the facility deteriorated, its demolition was considered among the highest priorities for the environmental cleanup program in Oak Ridge.
The K-25 Building demolition project began in December 2008, when Bechtel Jacobs Company LLC started demolition of the west wing. URS|CH2M Oak Ridge LLC (UCOR) took over the project in August 2011 and successfully completed demolition of the buildings east wing and north end. Wastes that have been hauled from the site include 6,000 compressors, 3,000 converters, 187,000 cubic yards of steel, 3,800 miles of electrical conductors, and 1.2 million cubic feet of asbestos insulation. In total, more than 460,000 cubic yards of K-25 waste have been shipped for disposal.
While this final load of waste was just one in thousands of shipments that have been made, it represents so much more, said Leo Sain, UCOR President and Project Manager. A great deal of planning and careful execution has allowed us to finish this project safely and ahead of schedule, bringing a successful end to the largest demolition project DOE has ever undertaken.
Although the K-25 Building is gone, the historical significance of the facility and the complex remains. In compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act, in 2012, the Department signed a Memorandum of Agreement with 12 signatory/consulting parties, which plans for ways to commemorate and interpret the historic significance of the site. DOEs Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management will construct an equipment building that recreates a scale representation of the gaseous diffusion technology. In addition, the site will display equipment, artifacts, oral histories, photographs and videos at a K-25 History Center on site.
