CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - As demolition work continues on the old Cedar Rapids Public Works building, the city is working to keep much of it out of the landfill.
Project leaders know it's a big project for the city with a lot of debris that could take up a lot of space.
The old building that's coming down sits just off of 6th Street SW. The new public works building recently opened, which is called the City Services Center. It went up right next to the old one.
Now workers are just trying to make progress on the job by tearing down the old flood-damaged facility.
Tammy Seber works in the building services department. Day by day, she's been watching the demolition.
"Every day I come by here there's a little bit more gone, Seber said.
Just behind the new building where she's now working, heavy equipment is on the move.
"It's interesting every day, said Flood Recovery Program Manager John Riggs.
Riggs said the demolition is about 80 percent finished.
But with tons and tons of trash -- where's it all going?

Two words described the ultimate goal of Demolition pain and destruction.
Clad in black leather and spikes, Ax and Smash steamrolled from Parts Unknown into WWE in the late 1980s and made it painfully clear that they were going to flatten anything and anyone who stood in their path. In the ring, they removed their dark hoods to reveal painted faces that intimidated opponents before the match even started.
Once the bell rang, Demolition made an immediate impact in the tag team ranks, using brute force to pound their opposition into submission. Few teams, if any, could muster enough offense to stagger Ax or Smash, establishing the painted warriors as a force to be reckoned with in WWE.
Though they were initially managed by Luscious Johnny V, the bruisers ditched the loud New Yorker for the subdued, yet devious Mr. Fuji. It was a match made in heaven (possibly hell), as Fuji passed on all of his tricks to Ax and Smash, giving their brutal brawling style a cunning new edge.
It wasnt long before Demolition had titles around their waists as the pair bulldozed through Strike Force at WrestleMania IV to capture the World Tag Team Championships. Ax and Smash went on to dominate WWE as champions for the next 478 days a record that stands to this day.
Ax and Smash captured the titles two more times, before deciding that their team was missing a little something. They added another member during their third championship reign in the massive Crush. The three wreaked havoc throughout 1990, with Smash and his new partner taking care of business inside the ring. Ax watched intently from ringside, running interference when necessary to protect their championships.
When their final reign as champions ended, Ax left, paring Demolition down to a duo once again. Looking to regain some of their former success, Smash and Crush reunited with Mr. Fuji briefly before exiting WWE in 1991.
Although Demolition went out with more of a whimper than a bang, the path of destruction they had carved through WWE would never be forgotten. No team has come close to causing the devastation that Ax, Smash and Crush left in their wake.

GARY The city plans to demolish about 60 homes if property owners dont improve conditions deemed unsafe.
Property owners can plead their case at an unsafe building hearing at 2 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Redevelopment Department, 839 Broadway.
Cedric Kuykendall, demolition coordinator for the Redevelopment Department, said owners have been informed via regular mail, certified mail and through publication of a legal notice in newspapers.
The houses are scattered across the city from Glen Park to Aetna. One commercial property on 15th Avenue is also included.
Kuykendall said the demolition order could be dismissed if a property owners promises to improve the condition of the home in a short period of time, such as within six months.
If a property owner doesnt show up at the hearing, the house likely will be slated for demolition. Attorney Gilbert King, the attorney for the Redevelopment Commission, will serve as the hearing officer.

NORTON SHORES, MI -- The old Mona Shores schools administration building, formerly Lincoln School, has seen the last of its days.
Demolition of the brick building at the corner of McCracken Street and Norton Avenue is expected to begin any day now. The cost of utilities and upkeep have become too much for the district, which moved its administrative offices to Ross Park Elementary School last year.
Pitsch Companies of Grand Rapids won the bid to tear down the section of the building that fronts McCracken Street. Its bid of $98,000 matched that of Specialized Demolition of Hamilton, said Steve Aardema, the school district's finance director. The third bidder, Melching Demolition and Dismantling of Nunica, bid $126,200, Aardema said.
Demolition will begin as soon as Consumers Energy relocates an electrical feed into the section along Norton Avenue that will remain as the district's transportation and maintenance building, Aardema said. The district has been waiting a month for the electrical work, which Aardema said is expected to be completed "any day now."
Demolition will take about six weeks, said Gene Gutting, a project manager with Pitsch. More than 80 percent of the demolition materials will be recycled, Gutting said.
Pitsch will be responsible for filling in the basement and finishing off the section of the building that will remain, Aardema said. Underground fuel tanks on the property make it cost prohibitive to move the transportation facility, he said.
Cost of the demolition will be covered by the district's sinking fund millage. The district has already paid $57,342 for removal of asbestos from the building.
Aardema said the district expects to save $100,000 per year in utility and maintenance costs by tearing the old building down. For now, the district plans to hang onto the property, he said.
Lincoln School had been a standalone K-6 district until it merged with several others in 1959 to create Mona Shores Public Schools.
