The owners of the vacant Wean United Building, one of downtowns biggest eyesores, have come to a deal with city officials to start the demolition of about 60 percent of the 300,000-square-foot structure now.
If a tenant isnt found for the remaining 120,000-square-foot portion by May 2014, that will also come down.
A deal is signed between Gearmar Properties, which owns the Wean United property, and the city. It needs final approval from the citys board of control, which meets at 10 a.m. Tuesday to consider that.
Under the deal, Gearmar will take down about 180,000 square feet of the building, which it has already started, and try to find a tenant for the rest of the building. The company plans to sell the former Wean United structure for scrap.
That other portion has space for a 100-ton crane, something that isnt common in existing buildings, said Dean Gearhart, the companys co-owner and secretary-treasurer.
Gearmar has talked with a few companies about using that location, which borders the Market Street Bridge, but nothing has materialized.

Demolition starts on one of downtown Youngstown’s biggest eyesores
RENO, Nev. (AP) - Plans to demolish a 108-year-old downtown Reno bridge made famous by divorcees who tossed rings from it into the Truckee River have moved a big step closer to reality.
Regional flood authority directors approved $7.2 million in funding Friday to pave the way for demolition of the Virginia Street Bridge to begin in spring of 2014.
Local officials say the concrete, double-arched bridge needs to be replaced because it acts as a bottleneck during floods and causes water to pour onto downtown streets.
The bridge became legendary after it was portrayed by Hollywood and the news media as the site where people tossed wedding rings into the Truckee after securing divorces at the nearby courthouse.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/GWqOeG ) the $7.2 million authorized Friday will allow for demolition to begin next spring and provide for part of the new structure's construction.
Flood authority Executive Director Jay Aldean says the "crumbling" bridge, built in 1905, is "probably one of the worst bridges in the country."
Construction of the new bridge is expected to cost about $16 million and be completed in 2015.
Another $10 million in federal funding for construction is being provided through the Nevada Department of Transportation.
The regional flood authority board consists of elected officials from Reno, Sparks and Washoe County.
