Demolition begins at Iberville development - September 10, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Construction workers began showing up at 5 a.m. Tuesday to begin the demolition process, and end an era at the Iberville Housing Development.

The first phase of the demolition began around 7 a.m.

It's all part of a $600 million redevelopment for the Iberville and surrounding neighborhood.

"My thought is -- it's nice for them to tear it down but in the process it's going to be built back so whoever wants to come back to the neighborhood they are welcome," said Melinda Theophile, a former Iberville resident who moved out of the housing development when talks of the demolition started back in 2010.

Fifty-nine of the buildings at the Iberville are set for demolition. The other 16 will be preserved and renovated. It's the last of the traditional housing developments to be torn down.

"I don't know where Im going to go at," Iberville resident Reginald Junior said.

He is among the last residents still in the housing project.

Housing authority officials said they have relocated 250 families so far and the remaining will be relocated by the beginning of the year.

Demolition of courthouse jail addition to begin in one week - September 10, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Be prepared for loud pounding and crashing from the area of the Midland County Courthouse. Demolition of the old jail and 1958 addition to the Midland County Courthouse is about one week away.

A letter from County Administrator/Controller Bridgette Gransden to members of the Downtown Business Association stated that Bierlein Construction began securing the property on Monday and for the upcoming week will work mostly on the inside as they remove all hazardous materials.

Everybody that I have talked to during the summer doesnt realize what is going to happen, said Commissioner Eric Dorrien, R-6th District, at a recent board of commissioners meeting. As soon as the first hammer hits that outside brick on Main Street, you are going to start hearing. So, just prepare yourself.

Bierleins secured the winning bid of $280,000 for the demolition, which was nearly $200,000 less than the next lowest bidder.

Because the existing Tudor-Revival style courthouse, opened in 1926, is listed on both the State Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places, care is being taken with the demolition of the addition.

They will demolish the addition up to within 20 feet of the courthouse and then go to deconstruction, Gransden said recently. Theyll stop with the swinging of the hammers and go in there, literally, and unbolt things, take them apart and then safely pull them away from the historic building. Everybody is comfortable with 20 feet from the courthouse. Deconstruction is a lot more labor intensive.

During demolition, plans are to not close any public streets and completion of the project is expected by Nov. 1.

However, demolition of the jail means the county sheriffs office will be without holding cells for approximately six months until new ones can be built. During that time, inmates awaiting hearings at the courthouse will be secured in the former records vault at E level next to courthouse security.

The project, which included renovation of the fourth floor of the Midland County Services building, is being funded with donations of $700,000 each from The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, The Dow Chemical Foundation and the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation.

The 1958 addition was built for $764,180. On Aug. 3, 1954, Midland County residents voted to approve a 1 mill tax for three years to pay for the new addition with The Dow Foundation contributing the remaining $224,000.

Demolition Derby highlights fair - September 10, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Perhaps the biggest Payson Demolition Derby crowd ever turned out for the smallest-ever number of cars and trucks, but a smash em-up finale and a bunch of muddy kids saved the day.

The Demolition Derby headlined the two-day Northern Gila County Fair and at $12-a-head proved a solid moneymaker for Payson despite the $4,000 in prize money handed out.

The fair itself drew a decent crowd despite the hovering threat of rain this year, to gawk at the prize-winning calves, steers, sheep and other critters lovingly hand-raised by the 4-H club members, not to mention the displays of giant vegetables, evocative photographs, brilliant paintings and a host of other exhibits.

But the Saturday night Demolition Derby drew the biggest turnout staged in the evening instead of on a fair-ending Sunday afternoon this year.

But with just three cars entered and half a dozen trucks, the ballyhooed event seemed ready to break down especially when Mesa combatant Glen Maddens already astonishingly mangled car stalled out in the middle of the ring before the action even started. He called for transmission fluid, only to have his engine catch fire in a great cloud of smoke as the safety crew rushed into the arena with fire extinguishers.

Then, incredibly, Madden got his crushed-beer-can of a wreck started and the mayhem commenced.

The three cars entered battered away at one another, to the growing delight of the ample crowd, all amiable despite long delays and the threat of rain.

An iron-nerved driver in a bright yellow Impala triumphed in each of the three car-on-car heats, belying the conventional wisdom that you need a Cadillac or a Pontiac station wagon or maybe own an auto wrecking yard for spare parts if you want to win.
