A demolition crew spent the day breaking down a silo at the Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies building in Lowell.

Authorities said a fire that had been burning for over a month caused an explosion early in the week that blew the top off the silo.

Joe Brooks, chief executive officer of AERT, said Friday's wet weather delayed the start of the project.

"The weather hampered operations a little bit. For safety reasons, you can't have people climbing around up in the air," said Brooks.

Firefighters spent every night since the explosion Thursday watching the silo to make sure that another fire wasnt flaring up. On Saturday, crews took the silo apart piece by piece.

"Three of the sections of the silo came down and were put on the ground this morning. The final section will be removed and that big egg of plastic, so to speak, will be rolled out," said Brooks.

Brooks said the big plastic egg was the cause of Thursday's fire. He said the area will be inspected Monday, and then the company will start rebuilding.

"When we get into the bottom and check the foundation and make sure everything is secure and safe, then the intent is to order the parts and replace the machine correctly," said Brooks.

AERT said some of the parts from the silo can be saved and used again, but other things will have to be replaced. Brooks said the company won't know for sure what needs to be done until the site is inspected.

DEMOLITION of a bridge that blocked the flow of the Mahiga Creek was suspended after a backhoe malfuctioned, forcing a City Hall team to re-schedule the job next Monday.

The bridge was located in the lot previously owned by Pepsi Cola Products Philippines Inc.

The lot was later sold to Asia Brewery Incorporated. The clearing order was signed by Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama in Sept. 4 last year.

The demolition wasnt implemented immediately due to legal impediments with the new owners of the property.

A team from the Prevention Restoration Order Beautification Enhancement (PROBE) was sent to demolish the bridge.

Armed with a backhoe breaker and a crane, the team started dismantling the cement and steel bridge. But the backhoes hose broke, halting the operation.

The backhoes hose still has to be replaced. We will resume on Monday, said Engr. Guillermo Viola of the Department of Engineering and Public Works (DEPW).

It will take three more days for the bridge to be completely demolished, Viola said.

Probe chief Raquel Arce said a barangay resolution was submitted to City Hall asking for the speedy demolition of the bridge, especially after the heavy downpour last Saturday that caused neck-deep flooding in Sitio Magtalisay.
