Too big to believe: K-25 demolition approaching the end - May 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

OAK RIDGE One of the biggest nuclear cleanup projects in history is heading into the home stretch.

Most of the K-25 building, a mile-long, U-shaped structure that was the worlds largest building at the time of its construction during World War II, has already been demolished. All that remains is one section of what was the buildings east wing, and workers last week started removing the transite panels from its exterior.

URS-CH2M Oak Ridge (UCOR), the U.S. Department of Energys cleanup manager in Oak Ridge, said more than 2,800 of the transite panels, which contain asbestos, must be removed before demolition can begin on the final section sometime this fall. Each of those panels measures 8 feet by 4 feet.

Safe completion of the transite removal will bring us one step closer to wrapping up the largest-ever demolition project in the Department of Energy complex, UCORs project manager Steve Dahlgren said in a statement.

Bechtel Jacobs Co., UCORs predecessor as cleanup manager, began the demolition of K-25 in December 2008. But the plans and preparations for the project began many years before that. All told, more than $1 billion has been spent on the cleanup project that generated massive volumes of radioactive and hazardous waste most of which was trucked to a landfill on a $20 million haul road constructed specially for this project.

UCOR took over the project Aug. 1, 2011, and since then more than 15,000 truckloads of rubble, gnarled equipment and debris have been hauled from the demolition site.

The part of the building thats still standing is contaminated with technetium-99, a radioactive material that decays slowly and poses some particular hazards if it reaches the environment. It was segregated from other parts of the building during the earlier demolition work to prevent the spread of contamination. Additional precautions will be required during its demolition and cleanup and waste disposal.

The transite removal is supposed to be completed in August, allowing demolition of the remaining section of the building to proceed sometime this fall.

The K-25 demolition is scheduled for completion in 2014.

The project has faced many issues over the past decade, ranging from large storms to ongoing criticism about the pace and cost of the work.

Demolition of industrial buildings in Yardley begins, developer of Magnet site given green light for minor changes to … - May 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

YARDLEY BOROUGH Borough officials called the demolition of the crumbling industrial buildings at 25 acre former U.S. Magnet and Alloy Company site on North Main Street "a wish come true."

Demolition got under way on May 20 at the site and could be completed in July, depending upon the weather.

After demolition is complete, Orleans Homes will build 63 high-end luxury townhomes at the site, according to Tony Cino of Cold Spring Investment Group. They could be finished as early as the fall of 2014. The three- and four-bedroom townhouses will be approximately 3,000 square feet.

Councilmembers on May 21 unanimously approved an amended final land development plan for the site, giving CSIG and Orleans Homes the greenlight to proceed.

Applause broke out when the vote was cast and there were plenty of handshakes.

The matter was before council because CSIG wanted several amendments to their final land development plan which was previously approved by council on Jan. 8, 2011.

On May 13, the borough's planning commission recommended that borough council grant approval of the amended final development plan.

The amendments include an increase in the width of the townhouses and the location of garages to the rear of the homes. A few detached garages were also approved.

A walking path, which provides an inter-connection between the new community and Cold Spring Avenue, has been shifted to make it straighter. It provides more direct and convenient pedestrian access to the ultimate destination, which is downtown Yardley Borough via a new footbridge. The footbridge will cross Brock Creek.

The plan also includes substantially enhanced landscaping to the northwest corner of the development, which serves as an emergency access to the Orchard Hill development near Dolington Road. Continued...

Demolition crews arrive at collapsed bridge - May 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

SKAGIT COUNTY Demolition crews arrived at the collapsed Skagit River Bridge Saturday night to begin clean-up of the fallen span of I-5.

The first of two barges delivered a 150 ton crane as well as heavy cutting and lifting equipment. The second barge will arrive on Sunday.

Divers will also go into the water Sunday to hook up the equipment to the partially submerged vehicles so they can be hauled out of the way.

Kris Olsen of WSDOT said Saturday night that pieces of debris, still in the water, will need to be removed carefully because the National Transportation Safety Board wants to examine them.

So, we cant just pull them out. We have to very carefully cut them and remove them, Olsen said. Well keep doing that, its like an underwater puzzle that they have to untangle.

WSDOT officials said the task will be tedious, and last several days. Once complete, they will get to work designing an option for repairing the bridge.
