City Hires Demolition Contractor - May 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Another big step to clean up the Magic City after the 2011 flood was taken today.

A finance committee meeting was held earlier requesting approval of a demolition contract.

The city plans to remove approximately 72 homes around the city of Minot destroyed by the flood.

Many of the homes are considered unlivable.

City officials plan to use some of the vacated land to add to the current levy system to prevent future flooding.

With demolition approved, the city can move forward with its plans to change the landscape of Minot.

(Cindy Hemphill, Finance Director, Minot) "It will get those homes removed, it will get those lots cleaned up and it will provide some continuity then in the neighborhoods so that people know that's going to be a vacant lot and or it may eventually be a footprint of the overall flood plan."

Hemphill hopes construction will begin as soon as possible, however no time table has been set.

Demolition of tornado-damaged homes in Holt begins Tuesday - May 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HOLT, AL -

It's been a long time coming for Tuscaloosa County. That what residents in the Holt community say about tornado damaged homes being demolished.

The state of Alabama owns about 25 homes that were bought as part of a plan to build an interstate bypass.

Since the April 27th, 2011 tornado they've sat damaged and abandoned until this month.

What's now part of a pile of rubble was once part of many family memories for Judy Skelton. Her aunt's and grandmother's houses sat boarded up, waiting to be demolished.

Now, hope is here in the form of demolition crews. But, Skelton isn't pleased with the timeline. "I think we should be further along right now than what we are and this is part of that. I mean two years later, it's very discouraging and you know it's hindered with healing, people healing," Skelton said.

However, some believe the healing can start now that demolition is underway.

Maria Anthony said, "I think it will be a great thing and will improve the neighborhood and make people feel a whole lot better."

One local business owner, Michael Bennett said since the cleanup has begun he's seen an increase in business.

Bennett added, "It just gives the community hope. And it's just a long time coming, but it's great to see everything getting cleaned up and heading in the right direction."

Boulder Applebee's demolition under way, making way for Trader Joe's - May 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Efforts to open a Trader Joe's grocery store in Boulder took a major step forward Tuesday.

Demolition work began on the former Applebee's restaurant, 1906 28th St., at the Twenty Ninth Street mall.

Once the brick building is razed and its debris hauled off, construction will start on a 14,000-square-foot Trader Joe's store, which is expected to open as early late fall, officials for Twenty Ninth Street said.

"This is a big project and there's a lot of work and a lot of moving pieces that go into it," said J.T. Fulton, Twenty Ninth Street's property manager. "Obviously, we'd like the store to be up in a day. It's not a reality."

Whether the Boulder store will be the first Trader Joe's in Colorado remains unclear.

Both locations are scheduled to open this year, said Alison Mochizuki, a Trader Joe's spokeswoman, adding that definitive dates have yet to be set.

The Denver location will be 18,000 square feet and will house the chain's sole liquor store in the state. Colorado law allows grocery stores and chains only one liquor license to sell full-strength beer, wine and spirits.

The arrival of Trader Joe's in Colorado and, specifically, Boulder has been highly anticipated. Thousands of residents have petitioned for the California grocer to open a store in Colorado and municipal leaders and industry officials have said the store could become a regional draw and a boon to city coffers.

In anticipation of Trader Joe's and the recently opened Charming Charlie, the June arrival of Five Guys Burgers and Fries and the fall arrivals of H&M and MadeWell, Twenty Ninth Street officials have made a "significant" investment in new signage at the center, Fulton said.

Demolition of former St. Peter's school in Coplay triggers memories - May 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

When the demolition crew first started tearing down the old Christ the King School on Fifth Street in Coplay, former students some well into middle age would stop and ask for a brick or two.

So the demolition workers began putting bricks in a pile outside the construction fence to enable the alumni to take the mementos at will.

It was there that the mini reunions began. Classmates who hadn't seen each other in years would come for bricks and find each other.

"Almost every day I go over and take pictures of the demolition and almost every day I run into someone I haven't seen in decades," said former student Susan Kline, who lives across from the school. "Word has gotten around about the demolition and people are stopping by."

Freelance photographer Scott Nagy of the Stiles section of Whitehall Township has also been chronicling the demolition in pictures.

"I saw a guy I hadn't seen in 10 years," said Nagy, who attended the school in the 1970s when it was called St. Peter's.

Alumni have also reconnected through a Facebook page called, "You know you went to St. Pete's if." Former students post old class photos as well as pictures of the demolition and reminisce.

For some, the razing of the school feels bigger than the loss of bricks and mortar. The Roman Catholic parish started construction on the building in 1927, dedicating it in 1928. Originally, the first floor was the church, the second floor the school and the third floor a convent for nuns who were teachers.

It's a measure of how far back many of the parishioners go that some still refer to the next door stand-alone St. Peter's church, which was built in the early 1960s, as the "new" church.

Kline's mother went to the school. Her parents were married in the first-floor church and Kline was baptized there, later attending St. Peter's for grades 1-8.

Start to demolition of Georgetown Mall delights neighbors - May 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

The long-awaited demolition of Georgetown Mall began Tuesday. The vacant and blighted site on Packard Road will be redeveloped in to Packard Square, which is set to include 230 apartments and 23,790 square feet of retail space. The redevelopment is estimated to cost more than $46 million.

Certainly Im happy to see that they are finally going to demolish the old buildings, but Im not so sure that this is any indication that new development will begin, said Jack Eaton, neighborhood activist and 4th Ward candidate for Ann Arbor City Council.

Eaton said Harbor Georgetown LLC developer Craig Schubiner has been making promises about the project, at 2502 Packard Road, for the last five years with little follow-through. According to Eaton, Schubiner also has a separate Michigan development that never finished.

Demolition is happening primarily because the government is coming through with grants, but that doesnt have anything to do with the developer, Eaton said.

Attempts to reach Schubiner for comments were unsuccessful.

Schubiner originally planned to begin demolition in August 2011 after winning the approval of City Council in May 2011. Planning for the development began prior to the closing of Kroger in 2009.

A series of financial setbacks have slowed project progress. Redevelopment was stalled because the property faced tax foreclosure after the bankruptcy of a lender and last year Schubiner was unable to demonstrate project financing to the satisfaction of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Schubiner was given until April to prove he had proper funding. He was able to meet this deadline and in January 2013, Schubiner was optimistic the mall would be demolished by February.

Nathan Voght told AnnArbor.com in a previous interview that the only thing standing in the way of demolition as of March 20 was the need for grant-funded and non-grant-funded work to concurrently move forward.

The demolition and environmental cleanup partially will be paid for by a $1 million state grant. The remaining $250,000 of non-grant work covers demolition of about half the site, demolition of a dry-cleaning building, and remediation of the worst on-site contaminated soil.

City Council Member Margie Teall, D-4th Ward, said she hopes demolition is an indicator financing to entirely complete the project is in line, but because of how everything has gone with this developer she said she cant predict what is going to happen.

Demolition begins for two downtown Bonham buildings - May 29, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

BONHAM, TX -- The demolition process is now underway. City officials say their goal is to have the rubble cleared by the end of this week.

The collapse forced the Dollar General, the Chamber of Commerce and a barber shop to close. Getting those businesses back open is the city's main concern.

The owners of the two buildings that collapsed are fronting the bill for demolition, but the City of Bonham is facilitating the project in order to get both the Dollar General and Chamber of Commerce back open.

City Manager Bill Shipp says the demolition cost is expected to be between $50,000 and $70,000. Workers found asbestos so that's raised the price. Crews are keeping the buildings damp to keep the dust from blowing around and harming the air quality.

A demo crew from the Dallas area spent today knocking out bricks one by one. Shipp says it's tedious, but it's the safest way to tear down.

"In order to avoid damage to the surrounding buildings, it's really one brick at a time oftentimes. And they're continuing to do that handwork now. Fortunately, when they get it down to a certain level they'll be able to get some equipment in there to make it go faster," Shipp said.

Shipp says if things go as planned, employees will be allowed to access the Dollar Store on Saturday. But the Chamber of Commerce building will remain closed due to safety concerns on that side of the collapse. That barber shop occupied one of the destroyed buildings and will have to re-locate.
