Omaha has a large number of abandoned and blighted properties that need to be demolished. These properties lead to crime, vandalism, and reduce the likelihood for investment in a community. In response to this need, Habitat Omaha started a new program called Project Demolition to tear down donated, blighted properties. In a true spirit of collaboration, three self-proclaimed "semi-retired guys" have led the charge. Dennis O #39;Neal with First National Bank was truly the catalyst and champion of this project. Dennis saw the Project Demolition business plan and said "we need to make this happen" and he did. He organized many meetings with philanthropists and city officials to secure funding. Once Dennis became involved, the program took off within a few months. Lou Lamberty with Olsson Associates is the fearless leader in charge of the committee ensuring program success. He is using his connections and expertise to initiate eminent domain on abandoned properties, and he keeps the project on track. Jerry Heinrichs with Investor #39;s Realty is the man on the ground that has put in countless hours driving the streets, tracking down owners, clearing titles, and securing blighted house donations. The nail house that stood defiant in a middle of a road in eastern Zhejiang province is no more. On Saturday, demolition crews tore down the home of Luo Baogen. He and his wife had refused to move, after authorities in Wenling city cleared out his village for a road. When the road was built--encircling Luo #39;s home--photos spread quickly on the Internet. Netizens called it a "nail house". It #39;s a term given to buildings that stick out a like a nail because their owners refused to move. It #39;s usually because the compensation that officials or property developers offer is much lower than what the property is worth. That was the case for Luo. He spent $96000 to build the five-story home. But city officials only offered about a third of that as compensation. Then, last Friday, after a media storm, local officials said Luo had a change of heart. He accepted a slightly higher offer of $41000, plus an area to build the new home. It #39;s not clear why Luo changed his mind. State-run Xinhua says he realized he couldn #39;t live in the middle of the road, and said quote, "after the government #39;s explanations, I finally decided to move." Hundreds of thousands of relocations occur in China every year to make way for real estate developments and infrastructure. Rights group, Amnesty International, reported this year that forced evictions have significantly increased, with many victims reporting violence and harassment at the hands of authorities. EXETER - An educational landmark that has stood on Linden Street for 45 years, the Exeter Area Junior High School will soon be demolished to make way for a new YMCA facility.

Crews have been removing asbestos and performing other prep work at the school at 56 Linden St. after the Southern District YMCA closed on the property Sept. 21.

Walls are expected to be knocked down by the middle of January, with the building gone and the land cleared by mid-February, said Rhonda Bernstein, capital campaign director for the Southern District YMCA.

To mark the demolition and the memories that still linger at the old school, the YMCA will hold an honoree ceremony for anyone who taught, attended school, or had other connections to the building on Dec. 14 at noon.

The school opened in September 1967 and had only two principals while in operation, Frank Kozacka and Thomas Meehan.

Kozacka died in 2010, but his grandson, David Emanuel, will join Meehan in removing the first bricks from the building at the farewell ceremony, which is open to the public.

The school closed several years ago when the new Cooperative Middle School was built in Stratham for students from Brentwood, East Kingston, Exeter, Kensington, Newfields and Stratham.

Bernstein said many of the bricks removed from the school will be reused in walkways and parts of the old gymnasium floor that are not warped will be salvaged, but many pieces of the building can't be saved because it's been abandoned for long and is in poor condition.

"What we can save we are, but unfortunately there's not that much," Bernstein said.

The Southern District YMCA has been working on plans to build a new facility for the past decade.
