CHICAGO With what the Chicago Bears had done defensively this season, it was almost as if the Bulls on Parade were going unnoticed.

That is somewhat understandable.

It simply made more editorial sense to compare these hard-hitting, interception-catching, fumble-causing, touchdown-scoring Bears with an all-time great unit like the 1985 Bears defense, than a contemporary squad that ranked only in the top five in virtually every category.

This years Bears (7-2) were bringing it unlike any Bears defense since those Super Bowl shufflers.

The Texans (8-1), on the other hand, havent played this well on defense, since, well, um, last year. Or better yet, last week.

Did the nonstop rain at Soldier Field bother them? Please.

These Texans are some bad mudders. And no, you dont have to shut your mouth. Unless, of course, it is agape out of amazement.

I mean, really, are you surprised that the Texans completely shutdown the Bears Sunday night? If so, where have you been?

This is what the Texans do.

Their 13-6 defensive demolition of one of the best team in the NFC this week is not unlike the defensive domination of the Buffalo Bills, an AFC also-ran, last week. Or the Ravens, one of the AFC favorites, the week before that.

Solomon: Defensive demolition no surprise at all

Over 100 illegally built homes are being demolished by police in Lenasia. (Oupa Nkosi, M&G)

Over 100 houses illegally erected on land owned by the City of Johannesburg will continue to be demolished in Lenasia, the provincial local government and housing department said on Monday.

"We were vindicated by the high court last week Friday when an urgent application by the residents and those occupying that land was dismissed, as the court agreed we were acting well within our rights by demolishing those houses," head of the department Mongezi Myani said.

The department would work with the police and Johannesburg metro police to ensure the demolitions went ahead with no disruptions. Officials tearing the houses down had not been intimidated, but safety was a priority.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said there were no signs of protest action on Monday.

Last week the department destroyed about 50 houses. Another 113 houses were yet to be demolished. They had been illegally built on land intended for government houses.

The department said fraudsters had sold plots for between R2500 and R95000. Buyers were apparently issued with fraudulent deeds of sale which had the department's logo.

Illegal sales 'immaterial' Various groups including the South African Human Rights Commission and Cosatu had criticised the demolitions.

Some home owners claimed they had been living on the properties for over 10 years. Lenasia residents barricaded roads and burnt tyres last week.

The Ecological Movement of South Africa expressed disappointment at the demolishing of the illegally-built houses.

Department: Demolition of Lenasia houses is legal

WATERLOO --- The city finally is ready to complete demolition of the former Chamberlain Manufacturing Corp. plant.

Waterloo City Council members are scheduled Tuesday to consider approving a $468,094 contract with Vieth Construction Corp. of Cedar Falls, to remove the remaining concrete and asphalt slabs, footings, structures and tanks from the defunct manufacturing site at East Fourth and Esther streets.

Vieth submitted the lowest price when bids were opened in July. Award of the contract was delayed while the city worked to secure clearances from the Environmental Protection Agency because testing had revealed underground contaminants in and around the 22-acre site.

The city is using a combination of federal Economic Development Initiative funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and an Iowa Brownfields grant to pay for the demolition.

Other scheduled council business includes:

A $217,747 contract with Stickfort Construction Co. of Hudson for repairs to the Blowers Creek drainage area south of Independence Ave.

A formal agreement with Cedar Valley TechWorks Inc. allowing the city to use the TechWorks parking area for Young Arena patrons.

The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the council chambers on the second floor of City Hall. Work sessions on flood mapping along Dry Run Creek and animal control issues are slated for 4:25 p.m. and 4:40 p.m., respectively.

Demolition contract up for Waterloo city approval

Two demolition workers were injured Sunday afternoon when a stairwell collapsed at the site of an apartment building fire that left 250 residents homeless in July.

Tom McLain, first district battalion chief with the St. Louis Fire Department, said the two men were conscious and talking after being pulled by rescuers from the rubble at 3949 Lindell Boulevard shortly after 2 p.m.

The workers were trapped for about 20 minutes before being taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not available.

The men were working Sunday at the site where a fast-moving blaze damaged the four-story, 197-unit apartment structure on the evening of July 18.

No one was injured in the blaze, which started in a fourth-floor apartment. But all the tenants, many of them students at nearby St. Louis University, were forced to relocate.

Officials attributed the 3949 Apartments fire to faulty construction.

THE demolition of the expanded fishponds at the junction of the Iloio River and Calajunan Creek is already set while residents were notified to vacate the areas.

City Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, chairman of the Iloilo River Development Council (IRDC), said the fishponds will have to be demolished to give way to the dredging of the Iloilo River.

The fishponds, that were located at the junction of the Iloilo River and Calajunan Creek in Mandurriao district, impede the flow of water, thus causing floods in at least six barangays in the area, Mabilog said.

Mabilog said the fishponds narrowed the flow of water in the river adjoining lot by the owners.

He also said the government is spending P4.5 million for the demolition operation against the illegal fishponds.

The City Government, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will spearhead the demolition of the expanded fishpond areas into the river and the creek.

The lot owners of the fishponds that were given notices were Epifania Mesa, Lourdes Avancea, Nicolas Decena, Jose Clavel, Paz Genetia, Lorena Glass, John Eric Glass, and Clarence Corteza. (Lydia C. Pendon)

The City of Cebu (, ) is the capital city of Cebu and is the "second city" in the Philippines with the second most significant metropolitan centre and known as the oldest Spanish settlement in the country.

The city is located on the eastern shore of Cebu and was the first Spanish settlement in the Philippines. Cebu is the Philippines' main domestic shipping port and is home to about 80% of the country's domestic shipping companies. Cebu also holds the second largest international flights in the Philippines and is a significant centre of commerce, trade and industry in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

Cebu City is the center of a metropolitan area called Metro Cebu, which includes the cities of Carcar, Danao, Lapu-lapu, Mandaue, Naga, Talisay. Metro Cebu has a total population of about 2 million people. The Mactan-Cebu International Airport, located in Lapu-Lapu City is only a twenty-minute drive away from Cebu City. To the northeast of the city are Mandaue City and the town of Consolacion, to the west are Toledo City, the towns of Balamban and Asturias, to the south are Talisay City and the town of Minglanilla. Across Mactan Strait to the east is Mactan Island where Lapu-Lapu City and an aquarium attraction are located.

On February 13, 1565, Spanish conquistadors led by Miguel Lpez de Legazpi (together with Augustinian friar Andrs de Urdaneta arrived in Cebu, but left after clashing with hostile natives. After visits to Mazaua, Leyte, and Bohol the Spanish returned to Cebu on April 15, 1565. They then attempted to parley with the local ruler, Rajah Tupas, but found that he and the local population had abandoned the town. Thus bereft, the conquistadors sacked the town and seized the island for Spain. Rajah Tupas presented himself at their camp on May 8, and the Treaty of Cebu was formalized on July 3, 1565. Lpez de Legazpi's party named their new colony "Villa de San Miguel" (later renamed "Villa del Santsimo Nombre de Jess)." In 1567 their numbers were reinforced by the arrival of 2,100 Spaniards and Mexicans. The growing colony was then fortified with the Fuerza de San Pedro.

By 1569 the Spanish settlement in Cebu had become important as a safe port for ships from Mexico and as a jumping-off point for further exploration of the archipelago. Small expeditions led by Juan de Salcedo went to Mindoro and Luzon, where he and Martn de Goiti played a leading role in the subjugation of the Kingdoms of Tundun and Seludong in 1570. One year later, Lpez de Legazpi departed Cebu to discuss a peace pact with the defeated Rajahs. An agreement between the conquistadors and the Rajahs to form a city council paved the way for the establishment of a new settlement and the construction of the walled city of Intramuros on the razed remains of Seludong.

On August 14, 1595, Pope Clement VIII created the diocese of Cebu as a suffragan to the Archdiocese of Manila.

On April 3, 1898, local revolutionaries led by the Negrense Leon Kilat rose up against the Spanish colonial authorities and took control of the urban center after three days of fighting . The uprising was only ended by the treacherous murder of Leon Kilat and the arrival of soldiers from Iloilo.

The signing of the Treaty of Paris at the end of the Spanish-American War provided for the cession of Cebu along with the rest of the Philippine islands to the United States of America. On February 21, 1899 the USS Petrel (PG-2) deployed a landing party of 45 men on the shores of Cebu; the Cebuanos surrendered almost immediately. Cebus surrender to the Americans was signed by Luis Flores, although others, most notably, Gen. Arcadio Maxilom and Juan Climaco, offered resistance until 1901.

Cebu only became a chartered city in February 24, 1937, during the Commonwealth Era (1935-1946). Many Philippine cities such as Dansalan (now Marawi), Iloilo City, and Bacolod City were only incorporated as such at that time (see Cities of the Philippines). Until then, Cebu City had never been more than a town since its original founding in 1565.
