A pile of rubble still sits where the smokestack for the Ohio Edison Mad River Power Plant fell after a botched demolition two years ago.

The smokestack fell the wrong way when it was brought down in November 2010, crushing a building housing back-up generators and snapping power lines as employees and members of the media ran to avoid falling debris and live electrical lines. The incident received international attention after a Springfield News-Sun video of the falling tower was posted online.

No one was hurt in the accident, but it left about 4,000 people without power for several hours and did an unknown amount of damage to the companys property. A company investigation into the accident is still ongoing, said Mark Durbin, spokesman for Ohio Edison.

Its still in discussion, believe it or not, Durbin said. There has been no definite decision.

Officials with the demolition company overseeing the project, Advanced Explosives Demolition Inc., said that a unnoticed crack in the tower pulled it in the wrong direction. The explosions were meant to send the smokestack into a cleared area to the east, but it fell to the southeast instead, downing two 12,500-volt power lines above a crowd of about 25 onlookers.

Representatives from Advanced Explosives Demolition did not return calls seeking comment.

Durbin said that the two-year wait was a normal part of the companys internal investigative process. There is the potential for legal action against the demolition company, he said. For now, debris from the accident is still visible on the property.

We dont really have an obligation to report (the results) publicly, said Durbin. It was a private demolition that occurred on private property.

WALNUT CREEK -- Because of the demolition of a 40-year-old eight-story building at Newell Avenue and Main Street, traffic south of Broadway Plaza has been a bit slower and more congested than usual.

And as the building disappears, so, too, will much of the congestion.

"We want to have the work done by the 21st, because of a city moratorium on work projects" over the holiday, said Carlton Thompson, an associate engineer with the city.

Shopping and travel traffic downtown dictates the street closures needed during the demolition must be gone by Thanksgiving, he said.

The doomed building, known variously as "1500 Newell" or the "Peace Building," was one of Walnut Creek's first high-rises. It is now making way for development of a mixed residential-commercial project called The Village.

The $18 million project calls for a four-story mixed-use building to house 49 condominiums and 38,000 square feet of retail and commercial space, all with two levels of underground parking (one commercial and one residential).

The building will take up space from the corner of Newell Avenue and Main Street, across the street from the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in downtown's south end, stretching north up Main Street to a point across from the southwest section of Broadway Plaza. The 7-Eleven store on Main Street there would be demolished.

More detailed plans for The Village project are expected to get to the city early next year, Thompson said. It's possible the new development could be finished in 2015, if various approvals occur as envisioned.

Congress is politicising issue, says CMC president; shopkeepers get time till Saturday

The move of the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) to demolish 10 petty shops to construct a bus bay at Eshwar Nagar ran into hot water after a protest by the Congress leaders in Manipal on Thursday.

However, the matter got resolved after the talks between the Congress leaders and the CMC President Kiran Kumar.

Earlier, the CMC had sent a team led by its environment officer to demolish the petty shops at around 9 a.m. They even demolished a portion of a concrete bus stand. The Leader of Opposition in the CMC Jayananda and other Congress leaders rushed to the spot to support the petty shop owners when they came to know of the demolition and protested against it. This caused the demolition activity to cease.

H.G. Chandrashekhar, a petty shopkeeper, told presspersons that he had set up a tea shop 23 years ago. The CMC had not given him any notice before the demolition work was taken up. All petty shopkeepers were taken by surprise, when the earth moving equipment arrived on the spot. The CMC had not renewed the licence of his shop since 2005. But he had paid a tax of Rs. 1,558, which was valid till March 2013, he said.

Mr. Jayananda said the Congress was not opposed to development, but the CMC should make alternative arrangements for the shopkeepers as some of them were solely dependent on the income generated from their shops, he said.

Later, a delegation of Congress leaders and petty shopkeepers met Mr. Kiran Kumar at CMC Office in Udupi to talk about the issue.

CMCs view

Mr. Kumar said most of the shopkeepers were not the real owners of the petty shops. The actual owners had sublet their shops to them and collected a daily rent. Most shopkeepers were clearing their shops of their own volition, he said. This led to argument between the Congress leaders and the CMC President and some BJP municipal councillors. Finally, a compromise was reached.

Mr. Kumar said it had been decided that the shopkeepers would be given time till Saturday to clear out their shops and identify the spaces next to inner lanes, where they would be allowed to set up shops, provided there were no objections from people or road congestion there. These spots would be checked by the CMC Standing Committee.
