Writer Sees Influence in No-Parking Vote - October 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By Guest Contributor on October 03rd, 2014

    Editor:

On Sept. 25 I attended a PTC meeting because of the fate of two valuable legal parking spots located on an easement (3.5 feet of dirt) on our street. The city had sent out the legal letter notifying homeowners of the meeting and options. Basically, the homeowner does not want anyone parking on the easement located on the front of their property and the person across the street did not want parking spaces as it was inconvenient for her to pull into a driveway. People have parked there for many years despite attempts to discourage by using different tactics.

At the meeting there were eight (two were questionable) signatures on the no parking petition including two from Village Laguna. For yes for parking there were 14 signatures.

PTC had a memo from Public Works saying that parking paving was easy and inexpensive and the city was ready to go. PTC also seemed confused about options 1 and 2. One member said we cant remove these two spots; that would create precedence, one abstained from voting, another said it was a good idea as it would cost nothing. These points were brushed aside quickly by two other committee members. The end result was to create a no parking zone forever. This seems to contradict need for parking spaces in our city and more importantly ignoring the majority of votes.

Vote-by-mail ballots are in the mail. Do you want to select a few who are members of Village Laguna (PAC aka mutual benefit corporation) to drive this city or do you want your voice heard? Mr. Zur Schmeide and Jon Madison have tried to distance themselves from this group and rightfully so. Choose carefully.

The Canton Police Department will continue to only issue warning tickets due to the ongoing construction on Church Street, which is reducing the amount of parking spaces downtown.

Acting City Manager Nathan Ingram said the $1.25 million Main Street Connector project that includes reworking curbs, sidewalks and installing new lighting is slated to finish in two weeks, weather permitting, or by the end of October at the latest.

City staff and the departments leadership understand this construction project has significantly reduced the number of available two-hour parking spaces, Canton Police spokesperson Pacer Condry said. Police Chief Robert Merchant has directed the Parking Enforcement Unit to continue to issue warning tickets to the vehicles failing to abide by the parking regulations.

Other road work is also affecting the downtown area. A paving project from the railroad crossing at John T. Pettit Street to Morris Hill Road began this week.

Travelers in the area were warned to expect traffic delays and lane closures. The paving project, which is part of the $1.8 million Marietta Road project which includes paving, curbs and gutters and sidewalks, is expected to be completed by Oct. 10, weather permitting.

About 500 warning tickets have been issued since August when the police department began educating the public about the parking regulations to be enforced.

The enforcement was originally set to begin Sept. 1, but Merchant extended the warning period to Oct. 1 at the request of the Canton City Council.

The parking fines planned to go into effect at the end of October are as follows:

Paving on east side of Carpenter Road begins Thursday - September 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Paving of the east side of Carpenter Road is scheduled to begin today, Sept. 25, and will limit driveway access to the east side of the road while the concrete pavement is being placed.

The east side of the northbound lane will be paved Thursday and, depending on the weather, paving of the outside lanes is scheduled for the remainder of the week. Paving will begin at the Washtenaw Avenue intersection and continue south to the Packard Road intersection.

Once that process is complete, the contractor is scheduled to begin work on the concrete curb and gutter, driveways and the sidewalk.

Earlier this month, work on the five-lane road was shifted as the west side of the road was paved and the project entered stage two. Construction of the road has left one lane open in both directions.

Lane closures remain the same for the project and an alternate route for traffic is suggested using Packard Road, Golfside Road, and Washtenaw Avenue.

The project began late after a mix-up in paperwork delayed the start of construction. The project is expected to last until November.

Driver goes through fresh concrete, causes thousands in damages - September 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LINN COUNTY (KWWL) - Thousands of dollars of damage was done to a Linn County road after a driver decided to drive through fresh concrete.

"Somebody went around the machine," said Steve Gannon, Linn County engineer. "Used a driveway to get up onto the pavement, did damage to get up onto this fresh concrete."

The damage was done to a new concrete overlay being put down on Monticello Road in Linn County. It's not your everyday pothole patch -- it's eight inches of new concrete.

"It doesn't happen very often at all," said Gannon. "This should last 50, 60 years."

There are signs warning the road is closed to through traffic, and the county says that it warned people who live there that the paving would be happening and they would lose access for a couple of days.

According to the Linn County Sheriff, the construction crew says the damage is worth $100,000 to $350,000, but the county engineer says only part of the road must be fixed and the rest will have "scars" from the tracks.

He estimates the repairs will cost around $20,000 and they are the responsibility of the contractor, not the county.

The engineer says if there was an emergency on the closed section of roadway, the county would allow for emergency vehicles to drive on the wet pavement and would cover the cost.

Troubleshooter helps homeowners with paving problems - September 20, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ROUGEMONT, N.C. (WTVD) --

Joseph Puentes and Ken Suggs, who are neighbors, both hired Stevens Driveway Services to pave their driveways last October, and both are still dealing with the aftermath.

Puentes paid $4,200 for a new driveway, but after the job was complete, he noticed problems right away.

"I started seeing grass grow along the edge," Puentes said. Attempting to stop the growth, Puentes started spraying weed killer on top of the newly paved driveway, but the grass continued to grow.

"I'd like the weeds to stop growing and the cracks filled," he said.

Ken Suggs also noticed problems with his newly paved driveway after paying $5,000.

    "Just deteriorating asphalt," Suggs said.

A few months after the crew replaced the pipe underneath his driveway, Suggs noticed that the asphalt caved in.

"I just really want what I actually paid him for," Suggs said.

After being unable to solve their problems on their own, both men called me.

Another delay for Hilo Highs new gym - September 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

What would the completion of the new Hilo High School gymnasium be without another delay?

On Saturday, Sept. 13, the school community was set to recognize the grand opening of the long-anticipated facility. But with five days to go, those plans were put on hold.

Principal Robert Dircks asked media representatives Tuesday, Sept. 9, to delay announcing the opening event after he learned of an unanticipated delay.

In an email sent Monday, Dircks explained the opening was delayed because of a scheduling conflict between contractors regarding the paving of the gyms driveway fronting Waianuenue Avenue. General contractor F&H Construction and subcontractor Yamada and Sons Inc. were delayed in completing the driveway because of malfunctioning equipment, he said.

The driveway work was completed Friday, Dircks added, but the dedication of the gymnasium will be rescheduled once the gymnasium is completed. This date has not yet been set, but we expect it to be no later than Nov. 26, he wrote.

It was unclear what specific work remains to be done on the property. In his email, Dircks said the state, contractor and the architect have begun a process to draw up a punchlist with final touches to be performed on the building.

When the punchlist is completed to the satisfaction of all involved, the building will be turned over to the school, he said.

The $11.2 million gymnasium has met with a number of delays since its earliest inception, and officials say much of the delay can be traced to a requirement that the building serve double duty.

The new gymnasium serves not only as an athletic facility but also as a Civil Defense shelter and staging area. As a result of the latter, the architectural design requirements were reviewed and subsequently adjusted to meet stringent criteria, Dircks said.

Meanwhile, he added, structural issues within the steelwork of the building further helped push back the completion date.
